What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write this book?
Ever since I moved to the Oregon coast nine years ago, I have reveled in discovering and learning about the flora & fauna and local history of my new home. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse quickly became a favorite place to explore. I always knew I had to set at least one of the homicides here. With its rugged, dangerous terrain, isolation, and beauty, it was perfect. To make it even more challenging, I created a character who needed to navigate this terrain in a wheelchair in the 1930s. I know that if Eudora and Logan lived in the same time period, they would be good friends. If readers liked Lies That Bind: Book 6, they will notice I am drawn to the Prohibition era.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I do read mysteries and thrillers most of the time, but I also mix it up every few books with literary fiction and non-fiction. I think it shakes up the grey cells to continue to learn new things. I am drawn to books about science and math like The Dancing Wu Li Masters, The Universe and the Teacup, or The Colors of Infinity. Another favorite for mixing it up is a good biography, like Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff. The Women, by Kristin Hannah.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Partita, by Barbara Kingsolver, coming out in a couple of weeks. I usually pre-order from my favorite authors: William Kent Kreuger, Michael Connelly, Louise Penny, and so many more! David Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter series when I want a light mystery read.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
One of my weaknesses as a writer is getting lost in the research and falling in love with my side characters. I sometimes have to remind myself that this is the LOGAN series, ha! That said, I enjoyed writing the scenes that immerse the reader in Eudora's 1930s world and how she deals with the freedoms and constraints in her life from San Francisco to Oregon. I also get a kick out of writing the scenes with Logan and Vern in the cold case unit and the chapters with Logan and her husband, Ben. Solid foundation the reader can count on.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Yes, I do! I have no idea if anyone else does this, but when I get dressed in the morning, I pick something that reflects the scene(s) I'll be writing that day. Murder? Red t-shirt day! Moody, ominous scene? Navy blue or teal. Untangle a tangled plot line? Black! That's my power shade.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Live your life fully and with integrity, helping others as you can, so when your time on earth is up, you will be at peace. And don't forget to have fun along the way 🙂
