Interview with Symon Cope, Author of Sober! A Life Beyond Pain
09 Oct 2025
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Sober! : A Life Beyond Pain?
My inspiration for writing this book comes from the depths of my own struggle and the hope that no one has to face pain alone. I wanted to show that even in our darkest moments, there is a path to healing and a life beyond suffering. As I learned, “The human spirit is stronger than anything that can happen to it.” My journey is proof that recovery is possible, and I hope my story inspires you to take the first step toward your own freedom.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Sober! : A Life Beyond Pain, what would they be?
“Search and Destroy” by The Stooges, with Iggy Pop as the lead singer.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Biography, Autobiography, Memoir, and History.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
‘Dylan Goes Electric’ by Elijah Wood; ‘The Wichita Lineman: Searching in the Sun for the World’s Greatest Unfinished Song’ by Dylan Jones; ‘Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret’ by Craig Brown; and ‘Anyone Who Had a Heart’ by Burt Bacharach.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My favourite scenes were my encounters with the ghost of my dead cat, Pudding, and our relationship.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I can’t write without music complementing my mood – so it can be anything from BeBop Jazz to folk, soft rock, reggae, Americana, psychedelic, trash rock, Krautrock, or electronic dance and experimental – infinite possibilities. Spotify is a wondrous thing!
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Not really, but how about: “Sometimes it’s the people who you imagine nothing of who do the things that no one imagines,” by Alan Turing; or “I’m a street-walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm…” by Iggy Pop & The Stooges.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
“That was a cracking good read! And if you’re ready for change, let this book be your guide—your new life can start today.”
