Interview with Robert Lary, Author of Nudge Toward The Abyss

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write this book?

Nudge Toward the Abyss is a geopolitical thriller built around the oldest question in moral philosophy: Is there any number of innocent deaths that can be justified if enough lives are saved? It's called the Trolley Problem. This book takes this philosophy to an extreme. In this book, a fictitious shadow government is doing exactly that, pulling the strings to save the Earth. I have worked to shape this story for over 20 years, having thoughts on its structure.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Thrillers and science fiction, mostly. Since I have a technical background, I weave technology elements into my storyline. So, the answer is yes, I like to read and write thrillers.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m fairly eclectic. I thoroughly enjoy biographies, like Washington or Franklin. But currently I’m working through all of the works of William Shakespeare, and they’re very difficult to read. I switch off to sci-fi or military thrillers for a week or so, then come back.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Probably when Agent Brown gets promoted. She’s toiled for years at the same rank, and her promotions are being blocked because she’s uncovered part of the conspiracy and tried to pursue it. She’s my favorite character.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I'm most productive from 11 p.m. until a little after midnight.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Trust, but verify.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That there really is a shadow government. The sites in Pennsylvania, Maryland, or Virginia are quite real. This isn't a conspiracy theory but an actual part of the continuity of government. The government you see is theater. Like an iceberg, you only see 10%.
