Interview with Randall Seeley, Author of Cataclysm
22 Jan 2026
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Cataclysm?
I have loved fantasy books since childhood, but what really brought this story to the front was leveraging the mythos of the vampire with a creature I’ve always been fascinated with: the dragon. When I thought about what if humans broke free from evil tyrants by becoming dragons… only to discover later on that they inadvertently cursed their posterity to randomly turn into dragons, the rest of the story unfolded. How would they protect themselves from something so wild? What organizations would form to control and exploit this? How could one survive? It all came together in a very fun way.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Cataclysm, what would they be?
Everything Is Awesome (from The LEGO Movie)
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Fantasy! Yes, same genre as what I write
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Finishing Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive and Secret Projects.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The climax. This is the first time all of the main characters in my book come together, so I built up a lot of anticipation throughout the other five books leading to this point. The scene didn’t disappoint. It’s funny, action-packed, and has some intense moments that were difficult to write, but I know the reader will appreciate them.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I write at 4 a.m. in the morning.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
No matter the circumstances you find yourself in, your opportunity to choose remains the same.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
That they are more capable than they realize, and that they have more potential than they could ever imagine.
