Interview with P.C. James, Author of Miss Riddell’s Cozy Mystery Adventures

07 Jun 2023

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Miss Riddell’s Cozy Mystery Adventures?

This is a boxset of my ten Miss Riddell Cozy Mysteries. My inspiration for the series is Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple who reminded me so much of my aunts when I was a child. Miss Riddell is my explanation of how someone becomes a super-sleuth in the Seventies…

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Miss Riddell’s Cozy Mystery Adventures, what would they be?

For Miss Riddell, ‘Que Sera’ by Doris Day.

For Inspector Ramsay, ‘A Wee Deoch and Doris’.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Golden Age mysteries! So, yes, similar to cozy mysteries.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

None right now. I’m too busy writing.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The voices in Miss Riddell’s Paranormal Mystery because they were real and I was trying to capture that.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not yet but it may come to it soon.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The Boy Scout motto ‘Do Your Best’ probably captures my philosophy.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Miss Riddell’s quiet courage and perseverance. My mother and aunts had been nurses in WW2 and that indomitable spirit is what I was trying to capture.
