Interview with Nicki Pascarella, Author of The Quiet Hero

19 Dec 2023

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Quiet Hero?

My debut novel was based on my grandfather’s experiences as a POW during World War 2. After my friend read it, she approached me with her grandfather’s memoir. I immediately knew that I wanted to retell his story for modern readers.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Quiet Hero, what would they be?

Johann Strauss, The Blue Danube.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read all genres. Romance is my favorite genre to write. Overall, I consider myself a storyteller and will write whatever tale is in me.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My current read is Once Upon A Christmas Eve by Elizabeth Hoyt.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The day Jan and his friends trick a young girl named Daisy into stirring up a wasp’s nest. This scene about Jan coming to terms with how horrible human nature can be, seemed symbolic of the events to come.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I turn on old sit coms and turn the volume off so they play in the background.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I strive to be kind to everyone.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That we are all connected by the atrocities our forefather’s experienced during the World Wars.
