Interview with Marlen Suyapa Bodden, Author of In Defense of Earth

14 May 2025

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write In Defense of Earth?

I’ve always wondered if there was a planet that had beings more advanced and older than us, and if they had been trying to contact us.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of In Defense of Earth, what would they be?

Axy, the super-android from an exoplanet, who comes to Earth, mentions a NASA song that the astronomers played for the launch of their robots to Mars: “Roam,” by the B-52s.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Historical fiction is my favorite genre to read and write, but sci-fi is my favorite genre to watch.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Travels in the Interior of Africa and Africa and the West.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When the alien beings visit Earth during the time of the dinosaurs.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I am most creative as soon as I wake up, when my dreams linger.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Rainer Maria Rilke: “What is necessary, after all, is only this: solitude, vast inner solitude. To walk inside yourself and meet no one for hours — that is what you must be able to attain.”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

We have only one planet and no other one to go to.
