Interview with Madelyn Scott, Author of Poison and Party Hats

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Poison and Party Hats?

These books were inspired by my dog, and I’ve always wanted to write a series with various holidays. Because people have a love/hate relationship with holidays. They are something we look forward to, but they can also be a pain. It took me years to do it because there are so many holidays, but I’m glad I finally did it.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Poison and Party Hats, what would they be?

I feel like Ollie the dog’s theme song would be “Born to be Wild.” Lucy’s would probably be “Roar” by Katy Perry.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love mysteries – all kinds! I like cozies, and darker ones too. As long as it has a puzzle to solve, I’m there for it.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m currently reading Jennifer Ashley’s Kat Holloway series – Scandal Above Stairs is the audiobook I’m listening to, and I’m looking forward to reading the next Amity Allen Magical Kittens mystery – Kittens, Cupcakes & Conspiracy.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Everything with Ollie the dog in it. He’s inspired by my precious dog Delta. She’s as bad as she is cute!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I love to write to a TV screen with a crackling fireplace on it. It’s hot where I live so we never need a real fire, but I love how cozy it feels. I crank up the AC, get a blanket and “turn on” the fireplace. It gives me the perfect environment to write.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” —Maya Angelou

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I’d love for readers to remember the found family that Lucy develops throughout the series. The small town of Shongoloo brings Lucy a sense of community that she never expected to find.
