Interview with Livia Angela Jaén, Author of Within the Order of the Dragon

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write this book?

This is a feminist book. It’s about a girl born in communist Romania into an ancient Vampire Order. The Order is restrictive, and obedience is enforced. She has a life of luxury while everyone around her lives in stark poverty.

I was born in Transylvania during the communist regime. I tried to incorporate Romanian history, mythology, and superstition into the first book of a trilogy. The trilogy will follow Andreea’s life (the main character).

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of your book, what would they be?

I don’t know. She is a strong character, and the book has a lot of symbolism. I would probably pick “Bergheim” by Rosalía (operatic voice and chanting).

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Historical Fiction.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

HIT.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Andreea's inner struggles.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No, but I will definitely use a lucky mug. I did not think about it.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Be kind.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Don't accept the status quo. Everyone knows right from wrong. If you see something that is wrong, speak up. Tyrants can be successful because good people are too meek to speak up.
