What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write this book?
My three-year-old son seemed to be covered with bruises… but they weren't really bruises! (You'll have to read the book to see what they were and why that mattered.)
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of your book, what would they be?
For Kiki Lowenstein, it would be Kool and the Gang's Celebration, because Kiki knows how to turn life into a big party!
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I read a little of everything. Right now, it's John Adams by David McCullough. Before that, it was The Hail Mary Project by Andy Weir.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Heather Cox Richardson's book about how the South won the war.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I loved writing about the dogs and the Purina Pet Parade, the largest of its kind in the world.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I need something to drink nearby: a cola, a cup of tea, whatever. I often get too involved to drink it, but it has to be at hand.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
"Dwell in possibilities." — Emily Dickinson. The world is a vast richness of possibilities, and I love sampling as many as I can.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
We women are taught to judge each other harshly. We need to stop that. We've been brought up in a culture that demands outward perfection but overlooks our humanity.
