Interview with Hari Hyde, Author of Biochemistry For Poets Living In A Cell

13 Aug 2025

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Biochemistry For Poets Living In A Cell?

My career as a research director in biotechnology companies nurtured my affection for the biological molecules that dwell in our bodies. Molecules enchant our imagination just as words do. Both possess an inscrutable mysticism ensconced beneath the surface. My book attempts to peek into that veiled world of wondrous (and talkative) biomolecules as imagined by the mischievous author.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Biochemistry For Poets Living In A Cell, what would they be?

I hear Sibelius’s Finlandia and Symphonies No. 2 and No. 5 as I turn the pages.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love classical poetry (Hardy, Dickinson, Keats…).

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

“Insomnia: Poems” by Linda Pastan.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I thought of Charles Ives when writing “The Unanswered Question.”

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Chasing a creeping cursor.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Matthew 17:20.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

“Proteins are alive. People are their puppets.” The soul abides.
