Interview with Eric H. Heisner, Author of Elkman & McGredy

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write this book?

This story is a sequel to my 2nd published novel - "T. H. Elkman". The story was originally a screenplay that won some award money, which helped me produce a Western TV pilot. Over the years, it has become a favorite with my readers, with many requests for a follow-up story.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of your book, what would they be? (Meant to be fun. Skip if you need to!)

Elkman - Born under a Wanderin' Star McGredy - I'm Trouble (By Johnny Cash, I think...)

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Period Western & Adventure stories. I also enjoy writing in those genres and constantly am doing research for my stories.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Charles Goodnight biography
Robert Evans biography - The Kid stays in the Picture
Louis L'Amour - How the West was Won
Cowboys & Indians Magazine
True West Magazine
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Making of photo book
J. Frank Dobie - Can't remember which one…

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The gunfight in the middle, where McGredy was almost lynched and Elkman rides in to save the day.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I stand up while I write in a small, unfinished bathroom in the house. It's dark and filled with a lot of my cowboy and adventure gear. My wife asks why I don't write at my office desk, where there is a great view? I get up every morning at 5:30 am, so it's dark, and I couldn't see out the windows anyway.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

The key to writing is showing up to put the words on the page. Be selfish and steal the time, or it will be gone to something else.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Life is a journey to be enjoyed. The hardships and misfortunes are the mark of a well-lived life. Obstacles are the things you remember, look back on, and make you grow. My Western and Adventure stories are mostly tales of survival.
