Interview with CherAnn Wright, Author of Where Secrets Stay

06 Feb 2024

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Where Secrets Stay?

My exploration of writing first began with a memoir as a means of healing from a traumatic childhood, much like the main character, Kevan Renee. As I began to write, I decided to give my memories to the character, and by doing that, I released their hold on me, allowing room for healing in the process. Even though the novel is mostly fiction, much of the story is based on the true events of my life. Now, it’s mine and Kevan’s story to tell the world.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Where Secrets Stay, what would they be?

Kevan Renee is much like myself, so I would imagine she would enjoy producing art while listening to similar music as I do when I write. Most are surprised when they walk in my she-shed to hear me listening to Nordic Folk music. Strange, I know, but it keeps me focused.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Psychological thrillers are certainly my favorite to read and write. I also love a good fantasy occasionally. What better place to escape to than a fantasy world.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m currently reading None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell, but my next focus is to find books written by independent authors for support and inspiration.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene was near the end of the book when Kevan finds a surprising letter she never expected and from a very unlikely person. I can’t tell who, because that would spoil the moment when the reader gets to this part of the book.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Exercise and listening to an audiobook are key before I begin to write. Endorphins mixed with a good story work every time for getting the creative juices flowing. Then, of course, there are my two dogs who keep me company. I made sure this could happen by installing their own pet door to enter and leave my she-shed as they please.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“Train your mind to see something good in everything.” Buddha

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Trauma doesn’t own you, nor should you allow it to. Like my character, Kevan, I am proof that one can overcome the worst and become your best—you can too.
