Interview with Andy Crawford, Author of Cultural Practices of the Heartland

05 Jul 2023

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Cultural Practices of the Heartland?

I had a dream in which a colossal, disgusting monster, was stomping all over the middle of the country, and instead of being afraid, Americans started to worship it.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I couldn’t pick just one — my favorites are historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and mystery/thriller.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My millionth re-read of Blood Meridien by Cormac McCarthy; Chain Gang All Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The climax, which takes place at a prominent southern landmark.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Just my comfortable spot on the sofa, with all my writing gear around me.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Be skeptical.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Think critically about important things in the world. That includes who to vote for, and how to distinguish fact from fiction.
