Interview with Eden Hudson, author of Two-Faced

What can you tell us about your new release, Two-Faced?

Winona Treesinger, our MC from Two-Faced, isn’t your typical hardened, gritty Urban Fantasy anti-heroine. She’s the last great Bigfoot princess, and her personality is basically a cross between this sweet, naive wide-eyed wanderer and an enormous butt-kicking monster. Best of all, to her, there’s nothing strange about being both at once. It’s just who she is. She’ll daintily wipe her mouth with a cloth napkin at dinner, then turn around and Hulk Smash a couple dozen cannibal demons into paste with her bare fists on the walk home like it ain’t no thang.

What's on your top 5 list for best books you've ever read?

1. Once a Hero by Michael A. Stackpole

2. Dead Man’s Walk by Larry McMurtry

3. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – especially “The Final Problem”

4. Lord of Chaos by Robert Jordan

5. The Drowned Cities by Paolo Bacigalupi

What fictional world would you most like to visit?

Tel’aran’rhiod from the Wheel of Time series. I would love to live another life or ten whenever I shut my eyes, exploring the wolf dream, changing and rebuilding the landscape, and having my actions there affect the waking world.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Same as my favorite thing about Tel’aran’rhiod—living other lives and building strange and fascinating new worlds. I get to play make believe for a living. For somebody who never really grew up, it doesn’t get much better than that.

What's a typical day like for you?

Whew, okay. So my typical day breaks down like this: Wake up, fall out of bed and start the coffee maker, feed and referee our boys, teach homeschool while guzzling coffee, read or clean up around the camper while the boys do their lessons so I’m available if they have any questions, feed everybody again, try to squeeze in some writing during their naptime, play outside for a while soaking up some Vitamin D, make more food, rush everybody off to martial arts class (I think I hold the record for world’s oldest yellow belt), come home, put the boys to bed, play some MtG with my husband/best friend/fellow old person yellow belt, tuck him into bed, then stay up until the wee hours of the morning cranking out the words, sometimes with a little help from a can of Monster Ultra—usually purple, sometimes pink.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

I’ve actually given this a great deal of serious thought just in case I ever do get to choose. See, I want a superpower that will enrich my life, but not add any responsibility or endanger my loved ones. My dream is to have Fart Vision—the ability to see farts, preferably in vibrant colors. I would see them in line at the grocery store or in an elevator or at a funeral and know who dealt it and laugh to myself. It’s the simple pleasures that make life worth living.

What scene in Two-Faced was your favorite to write?

Any scene where Chris and Winona are feeding off of each other comedically. I’m a sucker for the classic straight man vs. comedian sketch setup, and between the detective and the Bigfoot there’s a ton of “Who’s on First?” going on, except with roll-y chairs, magic, and murder instead of baseball.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“Don’t panic.” If it’s good enough for intergalactic hitchhikers, then it’s good enough for me.

Interview with Jane C. Brady, author of Cascading Petals

What can you tell us about your new release, Cascading Petals?

Cascading Petals is a novel with a strong message for teens dealing with bullying. It also reflects on depression and teen suicide. This novel was inspired by the bullying and teen suicide in my own community.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

As a young girl, I used writing as a way of escape. Now, as an adult, I enjoy it because it allows me to use my creative side.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

My favorite literary couple is Bella and Edward from Twilight.

What books are currently on your night stand?

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and Honeymoon by James Patterson.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite things about writing are the plot and character building.

What is a typical day like for you?

A typical day for me starts at 4 a.m., and I usually try to write for a couple of hours in the morning. During the day, I run the accounting department for the business my husband and I own. My evenings are spent enjoying my family, catching up with friends, exercise, and crunching deadlines for my next manuscript.

What scene in Cascading Petals was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene to write was in chapter 23, but I won’t mention what happened to avoid revealing any spoilers. I will say that, as a writer, emotions are essential to me, whether it’s sadness, happiness, pain, or anger. When I write, I want to move my readers.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Do the best you know how, and when you know better, do better.

Interview with Richard Easter, author of The General Theory of Haunting

What can you tell us about your new release, The General Theory of Haunting?

“The General Theory…” is a ghost story and one-third of my “Snow Trilogy” - three books set in and around snow, published by Endeavour Media.

The books can all be read independently, but once you have read the entire trilogy, you’ll see how themes and characters interweave. Minor characters or plot lines in one can become major in another, but they can be read in any order as totally separate entities, should you wish.

In “Theory…” I wanted to take you to a haunted house you hadn’t been to before. So everything you would expect is there - the creepy hall, the guests cut off, the creaking floors…but that’s all just set dressing and by the end, I hope the reader will agree that Marryman Hall is unlike any haunted destination you’ve visited. So far, I’ve been humbled by the generosity and praise given the book by international readers, so I thank each and every one of them for taking the time. It means a lot.

What’s the last book you read?

“Berlin” by Antony Beevor. I enjoy historical books, particularly about that period and Beevor is a master. This one concerns itself with Berlin’s fall in the last days of WWII and is a powerful, extremely detailed account. In “…Theory,” I’ve tried to keep my historical references as accurate as possible. You’ll see genuine people and places from history get walk on parts…

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I have to say, it was Stephen King. I started reading King when I was around 11 years old and became somewhat obsessed. It’s ironic that the first book of my trilogy to get a release is a ghost story - that was never the intention, but how very King-esque. I love his imagination but sometimes I wish he’d turn himself to less, shall we say, fantastical areas (wow, what a criticism. Yeah, “I wish Stephen King would be less “Stephen Kingy”, right).

His short stories based on “real” life are as good as anything he’s produced in the horror genre and I think perhaps some critics may be a little sniffy regarding his literary weapon of choice. The man can always write like an absolute dream.

What is a typical day like for you?

Get up. That tends to be a good start. Not getting up begins the day on a deficit, as one generally needs to get out of bed to let things proceed. Have breakfast with my wife and daughter, then start writing, usually in the bedroom. So yes, I do go back to bed, thus negating the previous sentence.  It’s where I’ve always worked. If I’m not writing books, then it’s scripts for TV. That’s my other hat. I’m lucky to work from home, that’s a great pleasure and privilege.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Through thought alone, I could switch off everyone’s mobile phones at will. That way, families and groups of “friends” in bars and restaurants would have to actually sit and talk to each other, rather than messaging people who aren’t there. Also, on that note, anytime someone took a selfie, I’d make them loudly break wind at the same time. That should stop that nonsense, quick smart. Wow. Can you spot a particular Social Media Shaped Bee In My Bonnet, there?

You’re hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

Stephen King, just because. Ronald Dahl, just because.  JK Rowling, just because. They’re obvious as hell, but they’re my obvious, so there.

What scene in The General Theory of Haunting was your favorite to write?

The end, where everything comes together. I can’t say any more than that. You’ll just have to find out why for yourself.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I’m a “Santa-Ist” not a Satan-ist, nooo, a “Santa-Ist”. Santa Claus, for me, has the simplest ideal for living. It doesn’t involve loads of rules or even much effort, but it is rewarding for everyone. Just two words; be nice. You don’t have to be a Saint, World Leader, or Genius. Just…be nice. If everyone could just live by those simple two words, wouldn’t the world be…nicer?
