Interview with Alexes Razevich, author of Ice-Cold Death

What can you tell us about your new release, Ice-Cold Death?

It’s the story of Oona Goodlight who shows up for a hockey practice one morning only to discover the dead body of someone she slightly knows on the ice. An empathic psychic, she sees the murder in a vision and later is asked by a wizard investigator to use her abilities to help find the killer.

This book was great fun to write. Three of my favorite things are magic, murder mysteries, and hockey. With Ice-Cold Death I got to mash up all three together.

I also wanted to explore how people with magical gifts might navigate their world. Oona is psychic and an empath. Her gifts have made living a normal life nearly impossible. The wizard investigator has his own issues to deal with. How they work out ways to live in both the magical and ordinary worlds was a challenge and a joy.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

That’s a hard question. Different books move us in different ways. For sheer story-telling craft, three I really like and have read multiple times are Mystic River by Dennis Lehane, The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, and The Road by Cormac McCarty. I’m a big fan of C.J. Cherryh’s Morgaine Cycle, Helene Wecker’s The Golem and the Jinni, and almost anything by Ursula Le Guin. Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys is another favorite.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

Hogwarts. It would be endlessly interesting.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

William Shakespeare. The first question would be: Who really wrote all that stuff—you or someone, or maybe several someones, else?

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love to travel, to immerse myself in various cultures, seeing and experiencing ways of life that are different from my own. Writing lets me do that without leaving home. I love experiencing all those different people living their unique lives in their own places.

Plus, it’s just fun.

What is a typical day like for you?

Most days I get up early and write for three or four hours, six days a week. We have a new dog. He’s half Pit Bull, half Siberian husky, and all energy. I usually take him to the dog park or a long walk for an hour or two every day. I listen to an audio book during his walk/play times. I just finished Anne Bishop’s Written in Red and am working my way through The Dresden Files. Then I come home to write some more and take care of the business side of being an author. I play hockey Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

What scene in Ice-Cold Death was your favorite to write?

Probably the early ‘getting to know you’ scenes between my main character, Oona Goodlight, and the wizard who drags her into the murder investigation. She’s an empathic psychic so she often knows what he’s feeling and thinking—and calls him on it.

The scene at the tattoo parlor was great fun to write. Neither The Gate nor Gil were planned characters. They just showed up. The Gate, being who he is, took over and dominated his scene. Then he demanded to be in the next two books as well.  Pushy little beggar.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Treat everyone with respect and do no harm.

When she's dropped by her agent for not being skinny, she has to figure out her next move but when her world collides with a witty fashion photographer does her career takes on a different path.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

You before me,

All the Ugly and beautiful Things,

 Sweetbitter

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Gabriel Oaks and Bathsheba Everdene from Far from the Madding Crowd.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love the escape that writing brings and creating people that are nothing like me. It gives me a great pleasure when readers tell me how real my characters feel.

What is a typical day like for you?

I start my writing after my kids go off to school at my desk early in the morning but then I drift into the kitchen with my laptop. Mostly, I write in between cooking meals or doing homework with my kids. I try to write every small minute I have.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

If I had an extra hour in a day, I would spend it with my kids but my mind would plot the next book.

What scene in Lyrical Lights was your favorite to write?

I love the scene where Simon challenges Mable to a game of pool, I enjoy writing the playfulness between them.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I go by the words of  Sophia Amoruso; "The energy you’ll spend focusing on someone else’s life is better spent working on your own. Just be your own idol.” and “There are secret opportunities hidden inside every failure.”

The Story Behind Jack Frost by Christopher Greyson

By Christopher Greyson

Most of the ideas for my stories begin with the question ‘What if?’, and the same was true for Jack Frost. What if Jack was trapped on a mountain with a killer? Just thinking about the events that would possibly unfold was very exciting. But the thing I love about Jack is the second question I ask: What if things get worse? That’s where I start ramping up the tension.

So, not only is Jack trapped on a mountain with a killer, but he’s cut off from the outside world by a blizzard. And it’s not just himself he’s worried about; he’s trying to protect a group of people. Then one of them gets hurt and needs medical assistance and… the pressure (forgive the intended pun) snowballs.

That’s how the story of Jack Frost unfolds. Jack goes up a mountain, and then it’s a downhill thrill ride of twists and turns until the big bang of the ending. The greatest part of the process is that I get to watch it unfold in my mind, and all I have to do is write down what I see.

Interview with Nana Malone, author of Cheeky Royal

What can you tell us about your new release, Cheeky Royal?

Cheeky Royal is book 1 in the Royals Undercover duet. It's a funny heartwarmingly hilarious take on a royal romance.  I love it so much because I got to make the girl the royal guard in charge of protecting the oh so cocky prince. And I also got to dig in to my romantic comedy roots. So if you love a cocky prince, a sassy royal guard and laugh out loud romantic comedy adventures, you'll enjoy this hilarious friends to royal lovers romance!

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Elizabeth and Darcy of course!

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Helen Fielding - Bridget Jones's Diary. Until that book I hadn't seen anyone writing with my kind of voice. I loved every word and it inspired me to write my first book.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Getting to watch the characters fall in love. I'm on the same wild ride as the readers are half the time. Lol.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

This is an easy one. Cuddled up with the kidlet as we both read.

What scene in Cheeky Royal was your favorite to write?

Oh my gosh, so many. But maybe my most favorite was the scene where Penny is getting a photography lesson from Sebastian. She lets it slip that she no longer has a boyfriend and the one obvious obstacle to them being together is gone. Things get pretty steamy pretty quickly. The tension is awesome in that scene. Of course, in this scene neither one of them knows who the other really is so that makes for some problems later, lol.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Anything can be done given enough time and resources. I don't believe in not being able to do something. I work hard to scrub the word can't from my vocabulary.
