Interview with Jenna Wolfhart, Author of Court of Ruins

What can you tell us about your new release, Court of Ruins?

Court of Ruins is the first book in my new romantic epic fantasy series, The Fallen Fae. It’s set in a world where the fae have lost most of their magic, and the six kingdoms have been at war for a hundred years. The main character, Reyna Darragh, would much rather be a warrior, but she sees an opportunity to take down her enemies by playing the game of courtly intrigue. All the while a plague-like dark magic is sweeping across her kingdom. There’s a lot of intrigue, mystery, magic, romance, and betrayal.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

This might sound cliche, but I have honestly been reading for as long as I can remember. I thank my parents for that. So, I have always been interested in writing, and even made some picture books as a kid. But the real shift, when I began to take writing seriously, was after reading Harry Potter. It swept me up in a way that nothing else ever had, and it made me want to write my own fantasy stories.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Oh man, that is a hard question. This is going to be so hard to narrow down! I’m actually going to have to do this by series.
1. A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin
2. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
3. Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
4. His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
5. The Riftwar Saga by Raymond E Feist

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Hands down George R.R. Martin. I would ask him when The Winds of Winter is coming out. 😀

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite part is dreaming up worlds and characters. I love doing research, brainstorming, and worldbuilding. It’s an amazing feeling when you make that connection between an idea and a plot, and it feels like magic.

What is a typical day like for you?

I am lucky enough to write full-time, so my day revolves around that. I generally get up at 6am, exercise and/or take the dogs for a walk. By the time I sit down at my desk, it’s about 8:30am, and I have a little shed in the back garden where I have my desk set up. It’s nice and cosy out there, and I like having a separate space away from the house.

At that point, I write for a few hours until lunchtime. After lunch, I’ll keep writing if I haven’t met my daily word goal. If I have met my goal, then I’ll do various admin tasks, answer emails, interact with readers on social media, talk to cover designers, etc. Some days are longer than others, especially the closer I get to a deadline. One thing I like to make sure I don’t miss is my reading time. I find it’s essential to keeping my creative well full.

What scene in Court of Ruins was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene to write, and the one that required the least edits because I was having so much fun with it, was a chapter from the point of view of a side character. She’s an infamous vigilante, and she’s tracking down a murderer. It was fun to write because she is just so fierce and no-nonsense, and she is really good at stabbing things.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Never give up.

Interview with Lori Morrison, Author of The Greatest of These

What can you tell us about your new release, The Greatest of These?

It was a story desperate to be told because, even though I was in mourning for my husband who had just passed away, I felt strongly compelled to write it. It’s about a family tragedy which became the catalyst for a deeper faith, for standing against abuse and for reconciliation of a broken marriage. What happened clearly demonstrates that the greatest love means sacrifice of self.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

The extraordinary story inspired me to write. The great amount of suffering I was experiencing made it feel necessary. The sparks to actually push forward with it came in stages but the first thing was conversations I had with a work colleague during that time. I found out that he was a published author of poetry and, with his encouragement, I decided to try my hand at writing poetry.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Counterfeit Gods by Tim Keller

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate Dicamillo

The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo

A Dog’s Life by Ann M Martin

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fray by Rachel Joyce

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing is that you can get lost in it. Finding the exact right words to capture depth of feeling for things that are difficult to talk about is like a release valve.

What is a typical day like for you?

I work at a full time day job in an office so that takes up most of my energy and I still have my 20 something daughter living with me and a dog so they are part of my day along with trying to spread the word about this book.

What scene in The Greatest of These was your favorite to write?

My favorite scenes to write were in the final chapter where I am reunited emotionally with my husband, after he did the most unexpected thing – standing up to his father’s abuse of me and him with a single word and while sitting in his wheelchair.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

C.S. Lewis was right in saying that the longings of the heart can’t be met by the things of this world. Even though we chase after that thing we long for whether it be a relationship, money, power or a career etc., even after attaining these things, the reality of it often disappoints.

If you find yourself disillusioned and at the end of your own strength in this life, you can be assured of what I found for myself; if you go to God in humility and honesty, He will meet you where you are because He really does care about you and wants you to invite Him into your life.

Interview with Joe Rothstein, Author of The Salvation Project

What can you tell us about your new release, The Salvation Project?

My first novel, The Latina President and The Conspiracy to Destroy Her featured Isabel Tennyson (Tenny) a charismatic, reform-minded Mexican-American heiress who becomes president of the United States. Rich and powerful forces fight back using impeachment, murder and assassination. I became so interested in that story that I wanted to know what happened next. So I wrote this sequel, The Salvation Project. Now, she's up against an even more deadly challenge.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I've wanted to write novels since I was a teenager, but I quickly decided that I had nothing interesting to say. Now that I have lived a pretty exciting, adventurous life, I'm filled with experiences and ideas I'm turning into entertaining stories.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

I really resist these types of questions. Books are not a competition. They don't come in first, second or third like runners at a meet or teams on the field. I've read hundreds of books that have informed me, thrilled me, inspired me. Two novels I've read in recent years have left me in awe, calling me to reread again and again: Hillary Mantel's Wolf Hall, and Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

A long time associate at an independent book store. I can't think of anyone else in the business who has that range of experience or likely has read so many books. I'd start with a simple question: Tell me about your reading and customer experiences.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

For most of my life I have written for specific purposes: TV and radio commercials, documentary films, newspaper stories, and other commissioned projects. Now, I love having an unlimited canvass for combining experience and imagination to create new worlds inhabited by fascinating people.

What is a typical day like for you?

I'm totally undisciplined. Some days I don't write at all. Other days 24 hours are not enough.

What scene in The Salvation Project was your favorite to write?

I'm partial to my final chapters, where I can surprise readers with conclusions they likely never see coming, and with enough strings untied to keep readers thinking about the story long after they have closed the final page.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

"The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on, and all your piety and with will never lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all your tears wash out a word of it." --Omar Khayyam
