Interview with Julie Scarlet, Author of Forbidden Alphas and Curvy Girls

What can you tell us about your new release, Forbidden Alphas and Curvy Girls?

Forbidden Alphas and Curvy Girls is a boxset consisting of my 13 best selling books at a discounted price.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I read a lot of books. One day I wanted to give a shot at writing, I hated the first draft I wrote. Then two of my reader friends read my draft and suggested that I continue writing. Later my readers started giving me so much motivation that helped me continue to write.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

I read books in different genres, so it's super hard to list out the best 5. Here are my favorite 5 books that I enjoyed reading: Hideaway by Nora Roberts. City of lost souls by Cassandra Cale(I enjoyed the whole series). The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzzane Collins. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Nora Roberts. She is one of the best romance authors of all time. I would like to ask her how she comes up with so many ideas so quickly.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing about writing is my readers. I don't know about other genres but my readers are so kind. There were countless times I wanted to give up but the support my readers showed kept me going. I'm grateful for each and every one of them.

What is a typical day like for you?

I have a full-time job that takes most of my time. Whenever I get time, I sip my coffee and sit down to write my next book.

What scene from Forbidden Alphas and Curvy Girls was your favorite to write?

Forbidden Alphas and Curvy Girls is a collection of different books, so picking a scene is very difficult. If I had to pick one scene, it's the confrontation scene in Protecting Her Curves. I did not expect I could write scenes like that until I wrote one.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My motto is simple. You live only once, make sure to keep your bucket list empty all the time!

Interview with Gabriel Farago, Author of The Lost Symphony

What can you tell us about your new release, The Lost Symphony?

A murdered tsarina. A lost musical masterpiece. A stolen Russian icon. Can Jack honor a promise made a long time ago, and solve an age-old mystery?

When acclaimed Australian journalist and author Jack Rogan inherits an old music box with a curious letter hidden inside, he decides to investigate. As he delves deeper into a murky past of secrets and violence, he soon discovers that he’s not the only one interested in solving the puzzle. Frieda Malenkova, a ruthless art dealer, and Victor Sokolov, a Russian billionaire with a dark past, will stop at nothing to achieve their deep desires and foil Jack’s valiant struggle to uncover the truth. Joining forces with Mademoiselle Darrieux, a flamboyant Paris socialite, and Claude Dupree, a retired French police officer, Jack enters a dangerous world of unbridled ambition, murder and greed that threatens to destroy him. On a perilous journey that takes him deep into Russia, Jack follows a tortuous path of discovery, disappointment and betrayal that brings him face to face with his destiny. Will Jack unravel the hidden clues left behind by a desperate empress? Can he save the precious legacy of a genius before it’s too late, and return a holy icon revered by generations to where it belongs?

The Lost Symphony - book 6 in the Jack Rogan Mysteries - was an ambitious project, and I look forward with great anticipation to the feedback from my readers.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I love language and literature. Expressing yourself through writing is a wonderful, intellectual adventure. I was introduced to reading, especially the classics, at a young age by my grandfather, and I was hooked. Tolstoy's War and Peace was one of my favorites, and I thought, perhaps one day ... I can write something like that! Well, I'm still trying, but we must never stop dreaming!

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Tolstoy's War and Peace; Duma's The Three Musketeers; Michener's Tales of the South Pacific; Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express; Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls; Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

If I could have a 'literary seance' I would ask Alexandre Dumas and Agatha Christie to join the show. I would ask them about the best way to portray characters. To me, characters are the lifeblood of a good book, in my case a nail-biting thriller. Characters bring the storyline to life and are the most important tool an author can use to make a book a page-turner. If my seance should turn out to be a little ambitious, I would ask a fellow author, James Patterson, to the show, and ask him the same questions.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The intellectual challenge, and the adventure of it all. I always strive for elusive perfection in my writing, but alas, I suspect it will forever remain just that; elusive!

What is a typical day like for you?

Once I start writing a book, I have a relentless routine. I write every day, usually late at night - always while listening to music - and review what I've written the day before in the morning. I exercise a lot during the day. This involves long walks in the rainforest below our house in the Blue Mountains just outside Sydney. I live on the edge of a World Heritage National Park, which helps. I am a keen gardener, and work in our large garden during the day, thinking about my characters and the storyline. Once I return to my attic, I write all this down, and after dinner, the actual writing begins. There's little time for sleep. But sleep is such a waste of time, isn't it?

What scene from The Lost Symphony was your favorite to write?

This is a hard one, because the book is complex, and a big read of more than 500 pages. That said, on reflection, perhaps chapter 5 - The Seance St Petersburg: December 1894 -would be a good choice.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Yes. The best is yet to come!

Interview with MariaLisa deMora, Author of In Search of Solace

What can you tell us about your new release, In Search of Solace?

In Search of Solace is a crossover motorcycle club romance, setting up both conflict and cooperation between an established book series, the Rebel Wayfarers MC series, and a new upcoming series for the Freed Soldiers MC. The story itself follows a hurt/comfort theme, with the heroine slowly finding her feet after years of abuse. The hero isn't looking for anything when he finds her, but the need that develops in him to make sure she's cared for becomes overwhelming.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Honestly, I credit sleep deprivation for the role. I've been a reader since five-years-old, but never aspired to creative writing, just always enjoyed losing myself in the worlds my favorite authors created. Then I accepted a more complicated position at work, requiring significant commitment from me in terms of time, and when I hit a certain level of exhaustion any sleep I gained became filled with this brave, funny, and courageous chick. That dreaming turned to an outline, then splashing words on the page of my laptop, as I tried to get her and the characters she'd introduced to me, out of my head! That was Mica, the heroine of the first book I ever wrote.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Oh, I'm sure you won't mind if I go over, because only FIVE books is really limiting. No? You want five? Argh ... okay. In no certain order, they are: Wolfsong by TJ Klune; Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice; Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey; The Shining by Stephen King; Out of Nowhere by Roan Parrish.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Goosebumps at this one, truly! My first guest would be Jacqueline Carey, because I want to know everything that makes the woman tick! Her worlds are so rich and detailed, and I would love to hear the process she undertakes as she sets out to write one of her epic series.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

This happened yesterday, actually. I'm busily writing along, and suddenly the next words that flow out of the keyboard aren't what I'd imagined they'd be. That's when the characters are so strong they take over, and I'm simply along for the ride. The ability to have the plotline changes surprise me, even as I'm writing it, that's the true magic in this whole gig, man. LOVE it!

What is a typical day like for you?

So I mentioned a day job, which I still have. Right now that allows me to pour all the money the books make back into the books themselves. That money buys me excellent editing, a proficient proofreader, gorgeous image acquisitions for my covers, and an amazing narrator and producer for the audiobooks -- all without going into debt.

What scene from In Search of Solace was your favorite to write?

Okay, my long-time readers are going to laugh. In Search of Solace began not because either the heroine or hero spoke to me, but because a long-time character, who is WELL known for being pushy and mouthy in my head, started pushing an idea for story arc advancement for himself. So for the first couple of weeks the manuscript was only known as "Gunny's a pushy bastard" until the other characters firmed up in my head. Then good ole Gunny wasn't quite satisfied, because he inserted himself into the story multiple times, twisting it where he wanted it to go. For me, the favorite scene is near the end of the book, a moment when Gunny piped up with "But what about the donkey" in my head, and I immediately wrote about a truck and trailer pulling into a driveway, and Gunny rushing out to lead this poor abandoned donkey into the yard, having adopted him without telling me, really. Then the donkey became the comic relief needed for the last few scenes. I do remember shouting at the computer, "Why is there a donkey in this scene?" Which in retrospect makes me both laugh aloud, and wonder for my sanity!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The gorgeous and talented Maya Angelou told us, "I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better." In everything I do, all the things I touch and influence throughout my days and life, I'm always striving to do better.

Interview with Tegan Abbott, Author of Legends that Bleed

What can you tell us about your new release, Legends that Bleed?

I've always loved insects and I wanted more people to think about their significance. I wanted to make a world that was bigger than each character, not just literally, but in their legacies. I also wanted to imagine a world without the technology of fire, and thus without metal. I wanted their world to be very different from ours.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

It's hard to answer because I wrote my first book just after I turned 18. I was not a good communicator, so I think I wanted to share some things with those close to me.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

The Reader, Servant Of The Empire, Liveship Traders Trilogy, Sabriel, Frankenstein.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The freedom. I'm in love with sharing different versions of our world. I love sharing ideas, but most of all, I love sharing points of view, and trying to see things from other people's eyes.

What is a typical day like for you?

I don't have typical days.

What scene from Legends that Bleed was your favorite to write?

I really loved writing any scene with an Aspect. They're very particular about what they say, they chose their words carefully, which is a serious challenge.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death. - Earl Wilson.

Interview with Herman Steuernagel, Author of Lies The Guardians Tell

What can you tell us about your new release, Lies The Guardians Tell?

Lies the Guardians Tell is a Young Adult Science Fiction novel with a touch of magic. It follows Sierra Runar, a teenage girl who lives behind a protected forcefield called the Sphere. An ancient artificial intelligence known as the Guardians have kept them safe from the outside world, which was made uninhabitable by the ancient wars. After one of her dearest friends is murdered, she’s sent on a quest to discover the truth about the Guardians and the history of humanity.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Writing has been a part of who I am for as long as I can remember. My parents read to me at a young age, and I remember being able to read as early as Kindergarten. I loved writing throughout school but I never believed that I had what it took to write a novel.

Last year, some friends of mine somehow convinced me to run a half-marathon. I had never run a day in my life, but I put in the work and dedication to accomplish my goal. Once it was over, I had so many people congratulating me on “knocking something off the bucket list”, to which I thought: “But that wasn’t on my bucket list!” It was then that I decided that if I could put that much effort and dedication into something I barely wanted to do, that I could do the same for something that I had always dreamed of doing.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

That is a tough one as there are so many good books out there.

1. The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks - This was the first fantasy book that I had ever read, and I was immediately captivated by the world Brooks created. I was about 13 at the time, and I am still a fan of the series today.

2. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - There is so much going on in this book that’s overlooked, and it’s really a shame that the movies, though really well done, couldn’t do it justice. I love the political dealings that come later in the series.

3. The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan - Nothing captured my imagination more as a teenager than this series. The world that Jordan creates far surpasses almost any other world out there and I simply love the magic system of the One Power.

4. Red Rising by Pierce Brown - This may be more about recency, but this is one of the best series I have read in awhile. One thing, that I believe, makes this book stand out is how Brown does an incredible job of ending chapters in a way that makes you compelled to keep reading. It’s a series that has cost me a fair number of hours of sleep.

5. 1984 by George Orwell - Having been an English major I have read a lot of classic literature. This is one that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I cannot think of a more influential book on dystopian literature, and though written over 70 years ago now, is still completely relevant.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

My first guest would be Brandon Sanderson. His writing and teaching have been very influential to me. I would ask him more about his writing process and the inspirations behind his work.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love seeing new worlds and new characters coming to life on the page. I love how characters often take on a life of their own, and do things that not even I expect. It feels cliché to say, but I am genuinely surprised when my characters react differently to how I had mapped out before putting a scene down on paper.

What is a typical day like for you?

I work full-time as a web designer so I set my own hours. I typically wake up at 5am, have my cup of coffee and get to work developing sites for clients. I’ll work until early afternoon, and then either run errands or work on my writing. Pre-COVID that meant enjoying a local coffee shop, but lately I just move from the desk to the couch for a change in mindset. I try to get in a walk, run, or just an hour of video games for a mental reset. I spend the evenings with my wife Nettie, or if I have the mental capacity to continue working on my writing or marketing.

What scene from Lies The Guardians Tell was your favorite to write?

Without giving too much away, there is a battle towards the end of the book that was a lot of fun to put together.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The only thing standing in the way of your dream is you.

Interview with J.S. Scott, Author of Tell Me You're Mine

What can you tell us about your new release, Tell Me You're Mine?

This is the first book in The British Billionaires series.  Damian Lancaster is always covering for his twin’s misadventures.  With their company’s reputation on the line he needs help to fix it.  Enter Nicole, PR fixer to the rescue.  Except her meeting with the board does not go as well as planned and she is on her way back to the US feeling as if she failed.

Unknown to her that the sexy British man sitting next to her on the flight is none other that Damian Lancaster.  Unfortunately, their first meeting is not a great start to a working relationship.

The book is full of my usual steamy, alpha male and a strong heroine that readers have come to love.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

When I was younger, I really loved fantasy, like A Wrinkle in Time, The Chronicles of Narnia, and a little later, Lord of the Rings.  But I don’t think it was until I got into my teen years that I started writing my own stories that had a romance element after I started reading teen romance.  Granted, those early stories were horrific, but at least I knew it was my goal.

Romance has always been my go-to genre since I was a medical professional for many years, and I wanted to escape into a story that I knew was going to have a happily-ever-after.

When self-publishing was in its infancy, I decided to start putting my heart and my stories out there, and I was humbled by my success.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I think the one thing I love most about writing romance is bringing a story to readers that they can enjoy and get swept by so they can escape everyday life for just a little while.

What is a typical day like for you?

Coffee first, I cannot function without my caffeine. Once I have a cup or three it is off to my office where I begin my day writing. With COVID-19 right now leaving the house is not an option so I spend my time handling business matters, writing, and giving my two German Shepherds as much love as they can take in one day. My poor husband rarely sees me until dinner time.

What scene from Tell Me You're Mine was your favorite to write?

That would have to be the scene where they meet on the plane.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Not really a motto or quote, but I just live by being thoughtful and kind to those around us. I am a strong believer in lifting up other women and empowering them to follow their dreams and be who they really want to be.

J.S. Scott is the author of Tell Me You're Mine.
