Interview with Florence Reiss Kraut, Author of How to Make a Life
What can you tell us about your new release, How to Make a Life?
My novel, “How to Make a Life,” is a family saga, covering 100 years in the lives of the Weissmans, an immigrant Jewish family. It begins when Ida, with her two remaining daughters, escapes a murderous pogrom in Ukraine, determined to save her family. She has high hopes for a new life in America, but she cannot foresee the struggles her children and grandchildren have once there. Through the 20th century as the five Weissman children grow, marry and have children of their own, each generation's actions impact the lives of the next.
Secrets about the family’s past, the betrayal of one sibling by another, mental illness and mistakes made in the name of love undermine the lives of the children and grandchildren who must take comfort in the bonds of family and find the courage to forgive. It is the strength and resilience of the family members that allows them to live with joy and success in their lives. Kirklus Reviews called it “An engaging and heartfelt portrayal of intergenerational trauma and hope.”
What or who inspired you to become an author?
I grew up in a large family with 27 first cousins and 20 aunts and uncles. I used to listen to my aunts tell stories as they washed and dried the dishes at family parties, and I loved hearing them. As a child I scribbled stories in my notebooks, and made up stories as I walked down the street. As a social worker I heard the stories of my clients as they tried to work out their problems. These stories have always informed the way I think. Growing up, all the authors I read inspired me to want to be an author. I have written and published all my life…stories, essays and even two unpublished novels. How to Make a Life is my first published novel.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
No doubt the answer would change from year to year. Right now I would nominate Amy Bloom’s Away, Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life, Margaret Atwood’s books, particularly The Handmaid’s Tale, Toni Morrison’s Beloved which seared my heart and Alice Munro’s Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage: Stories. I must also mention Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women which inspired me when I was a little girl, to be a writer.
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
I would invite Jane Austen, another of my all time authors, and ask her how she had the courage, in her time and century, to write and publish. I have struggled through my life, as a daughter, wife and mother, to be able to put my writing first, or even second, in my life.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
I love writing characters that readers find so real they think they know them. The greatest compliment is when a reader says the characters were so real they stayed in their heads for weeks.
What is a typical day like for you?
I like to write in the morning. I rise early, have coffee, ideally write for a few hours and then go on the business of the “un-writer” part of my life, although I am always writing in my head. I go for a walk, do some yoga, read, watch TV. But, of course recently, COVID has really dictated the choices and rhythms of my daily life.
What scene from How to Make a Life was your favorite to write?
My favorite chapter in my book is the chapter in the voice of Ruby, the sister who is afflicted with mental illness, as she struggles with feelings of revulsion about herself. I wrote the chapter in the first person although the rest of the book is in the third person, because I wanted to get as close as possible to Ruby’s mental state to show her suffering and give the readers a chance to really connect with her. My sympathy and understanding of this difficult and beautiful woman increased enormously as I wrote from her voice.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
As I have gotten older I realize how precious and unpredictable life is. I have adopted two motts. The first I saw in an ice cream store many years ago (I love ice cream): Life is short. Eat dessert first. The second I adopted from my sister-in-law who has told the world: Life is not a dress rehearsal. I agree with that.
Both mottos remind me to do the important things.

Interview with Sloane Virago, Author of Last Temptation
What can you tell us about your new release, Last Temptation?
At its heart, it's a story of what really makes someone a good person as well as the compromises we all have to take in our normal lives, especially when love is involved. In my book, Daemon has a corrupting influence on the people around him until he meets Esperanza. She makes him rethink everything that he has done, but this influence works both ways.
The story begins with a trio of friends, Jacob, Peter and Esperanza. Daemon initially grows close to Jacob while Peter is trying to make a relationship work with his childhood crush, Esperanza. When things begin to fall apart between them, Esperanza is left alone as a potential target for Daemon. The bad boy is unlike anyone she has ever met, which instantly draws her to him. The ultimate question is how much Esperanza is willing to sacrifice in order to be with Daemon. When her principles are placed on the line, she must decide if she will remain true to herself or give up everything for love.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
I think my original inspiration was a poetry contest I won when I was in elementary school. Somehow, the fact that I won made it seem like a writing career was possible to my young mind. While I didn't become a poet, I did end up discovering my love of fiction writing and began a career as a copywriter as well.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
Ever since I was a little girl Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have been two of my favorite books. Another book that shaped my early worldview and understanding of life was Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. If I think of books that had the most profound effect on me, The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay has really retained a strong influence on my psyche since I first read it a decade ago.
Finally, the stories and overarching narrative in Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes have always fascinated me. Don Quixote challenges my idea of what is real with his quixotic belief that windmills are giants, and Aldonza is a noble lady. It makes me think about how much the great romances and dreams of our lives are based on our ideas and not reality.
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
That's a really difficult question. I think interviewing an author would completely ruin the ideas I have about a book, so I'm not sure that I'd want to do it. If I interviewed anyone, it would probably be someone like Stieg Larsson. He was famous for writing the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and the Millennium series, but he actually died before completing all of the books. Other people have finished his work, but I'd really like to know what his real plans were for the series and if he approved of how everything worked out.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
I love that I get to live in an entirely different world for a while. After a few hours of writing, it feels like your characters and the imaginary world are more real than your day-to-day life. You have the power to create a new being with the swipe of a pen, and a push of a button can just as easily delete a budding romance.
What is a typical day like for you?
I normally wake up with my son in the morning and drink some tea while he eats breakfast. Since I also work as a copywriter, I generally start working as soon as my husband wakes up. We alternate between who works during the day since we both work remotely. Around lunchtime, we normally go for a walk or to the beach for a while. Afterward, we both work while my son takes a nap. Before the pandemic happened, we used to go to the library or pool in the evenings, but we'll have to wait on that for a while longer.
What scene from Last Temptation was your favorite to write?
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
“When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams — this may be madness. Too much sanity may be madness — and maddest of all: to see life as it is, and not as it should be!” - Don Quixote
Sometimes, I think we have to reconsider our lives and decide if our world is really the world we want to live in. It's easy to get bogged down by day-to-day life, so I use this quote as a reminder that I need to think about my beliefs and actions. Each day, I should be focused on building the kind of world that I would want to live in, even though it is quite likely that those dreams will never come to pass.

Interview with Sarah Ready, Author of The Fall in Love Checklist
What can you tell us about your new release, The Fall in Love Checklist?
The Fall in Love Checklist is The Bucket List meets rom com. It’s a delightful contemporary romance about a woman who makes a list of all the things she’s ever wanted to do and does them – every last one! I wanted to write a story about real world women, their struggles and their courage. The Fall in Love Checklist has romance, friendship, family, and humor.
The inspiration for the story came more than a decade ago when my sister in law had breast cancer. During treatment she mentioned the women who would sit together and knit and chat while going through chemo. This single image took flight and became the inspiration behind the book. While The Fall in Love Checklist is a romance between Dany and Jack, it’s also a romance between Dany and “the girls”, the women she meets at chemo. Their friendship is what sustains Dany and this book!
I had so much fun writing this book. It’s fast-paced and there are so many laugh out loud scenes. I truly fell in love with all the characters and I know you will too.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
I grew up in a large family. When I was little I would spend hours entertaining my siblings with made up stories – horror stories, fantasies, science fiction, romances, anything that kept their attention. I was nine I wrote down my first story and won my State’s young author competition. The award was a trip to a writer’s conference where authors and story tellers filled my head with dreams of writing. After that, I was hooked.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
This is probably the hardest question you can ask a lover of books. I’ve read thousands and thousands of books and can’t give a top five or a top ten or even a top one hundred! That’s because books change. They have a different meaning, a different feeling based on when you read them, who you are when you read them, and what your life experiences have been. A book I read ten years ago means something completely different to me today. I’ll amend my statement, books don’t change, we do. Every book I read, I get something from. Based on that, the best book I’ve read is often the book I’m currently reading.
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
Well…if I’m allowed to invite anyone in time, I’d interview C.S. Lewis! My grandparents went to England when I was little and brought back a beautiful boxed set of the Narnia series. I’d never heard of Narnia. It was magic! I read those paperbacks over and over until they were falling apart. I’d like to ask C.S. Lewis how his life experiences influenced his writing and whether he had any other ideas for Narnia (more books) that he never wrote down.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
I love all of it. Telling a story is like the night before Christmas, the expectation and excitement are intoxicating – typing “The End” is like unwrapping the first gift. It’s a joy.
What is a typical day like for you?
I write first thing in the morning for as many hours as possible. After that, I take my puppy for a long walk and plot out the upcoming scenes. In the afternoon I write again for as many hours as possible. After that I do research, read, or work on other projects.
What scene from The Fall in Love Checklist was your favorite to write?
There is a scene in a dive bar involving a mechanical bull that was a riot to write. It makes me laugh just thinking of it.
I don’t want to go into spoiler territory, but there was also a scene where Dany finally dances which was very emotional to write and will probably (okay 100%) make you cry.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Give as much joy, laugher and love as possible to the world – they’re free to give and come from an endless supply.

Interview with Erin Johnson, Author of Spelling the Tea
What can you tell us about your new release, Spelling the Tea?
It's the first book in my new Vampire Tea Room Magical Mysteries series. In the story, Minnie Wells is working her marketing magic to save the coziest, vampire-owned tea room in Bath, England. But add in a string of murders, spells to learn, and a handsome Mr. Darcy-esque boss, and Minnie’s cup runneth over with mischief and mayhem. It's a light, fun mystery with sprinkles of magic and romance. I was inspired by a trip I took with my sister, where we attended a Regency-themed ball in Bath. I just fell in love with the city, and passed that fondness for Bath, along with my Jane Austen fangirling, along to my main character Minnie.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
I've loved writing and reading since I was little. Books just seemed like these magical escapes to other worlds, and as someone with a pretty active imagination, I was inspired to create my own worlds.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
Gosh, this is a hard one! It's going to be a pretty eclectic mix. I'd have to say Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, Uprooted by Naomi Novik, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, and The Lord of the Rings by J. R.R. Tolkien.
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
I'd probably bring Naomi Novik on. I love pretty much anything fantasy, and I found her descriptions of magic in Uprooted so incredibly real and enchanting (pun intended). I'd love to know what she drew on for inspiration.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
I love the moments when I get into the flow and the rest of the world disappears and I really just get to live the story alongside my characters. I think the next best thing is hearing from readers who experienced the same escape and got to share that world with me.
What is a typical day like for you?
Well, typical has been a little unusual this past year haha! But usually, I'll wake up around 5am and my partner brings me a matcha latte in bed (yum). I need the caffeine to jump start my brain. Lately, I've just been working out of bed most of the day. I'll do some admin work, then depending on where I'm at in my current manuscript, I'll write, edit, or outline. I take my dogs for lots of walks in between to stretch my legs and will sometimes dictate passages while I'm out with them (I'm sure my neighbors think I'm a little nuts, walking around, talking about poisonings and witches). In the evenings and on weekends, I take time to eat with my partner and watch some shows. I've also recently taken up weaving as a hobby, so I've been having fun with that.
What scene from Spelling the Tea was your favorite to write?
In the book, Minnie's going through a divorce and will be deported from England, unless she can convince Fitz, the vampire owner of a tea room, to hire her. Fitz was in his prime years during the Regency, when he was turned, and he's uncomfortable with modern life, and misses his time. He's also a bit old-fashioned in terms of his views of women and business. The tea room is struggling to bring in customers and Fitz refuses to hire her. But when one of the tea room's employees is killed, Minnie takes it upon herself to find the killer and help the tea room.
For most of the book, Fitz is a bit annoyed by her persistence, and she's frustrated with his outdated ideas (though there's some attraction bubbling under the surface). They have a moment in the kitchen of the tea room, when Fitz is baking, where all those feelings sort of bubble over and they both bond over having trouble letting go of the past and moving on. I loved writing that scene. It was fun, fast-paced, and it felt like both characters opened up and showed more vulnerable sides to me, and to each other.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I just try to follow whatever feels magical and lights me up, even if it's silly. And when things feel intimidating or scary, I just think of it as an experiment. I'll give it a try and can always change my mind or try something else.
