Interview with Alessa Thorn, Author of Set

What can you tell us about your new release, Set?

Set is the god of war from Egyptian Mythology, and the story is about how in modern times he's living in Egypt and working as a mercenary. He's given a job to protect a mob boss's daughter, Ayla, who has no idea who her real father is. Before Set was known as a god of war, he was actually a god of protection, and helping Ayla reminds him of those beginnings, and helps draw him back into living again.

What books are currently on your nightstand?

At the moment I have some Egyptian mythology books, as I have another two books in the series and I love reading them before bed. I also have 'A Dark Vampire Curse' by Nikki St Crowe and 'Anyway the Wind Blows' by Rainbow Rowell.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

I'm really obsessed with mythology and ancient history. I love learning about gods and different cultures from around the world. I get a lot of joy out of it because there's always something new to learn about and its keeps my ADHD amused for hours.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Soaking in my bathtub! It's my favorite way to end the day.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Believe nothing that you hear, and only half of what you see.

What scene from Set was your favorite to write?

I really loved writing the scenes in the Duat, the Egyptian underworld, and Set's interactions with Thoth, the god of magic. They both have such big personalities and have such a long history together that throwing them together again was a lot of fun.

Interview with Michelle Pariza Wacek, Author of The Third Nanny

What can you tell us about your new release, The Third Nanny?

It’s a standalone psychological thriller/domestic thriller set in my award-winning Secrets of Redemption universe.

It’s my most twisted psychological thriller yet. However, as Redemption, Wisconsin is a haunted town with a violent past, it makes sense to have a story like this take place there.

What books are currently on your nightstand?

Well, my Kindle is on my nightstand, and at the moment it’s full of psychological thrillers. Right now I’m reading “My Lovely Wife” by Samantha Downing and I love it. I also just finished “The Dinner Guest” by BP Walter which I would also recommend.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Don’t stop creating fiction books. I allowed myself to get derailed as an adult and put my fiction writing career “on hold” while I built my very successful copywriting company. Of course it was only supposed to be temporary, but one day I looked up and nearly a decade had gone by. That’s probably my biggest regret that I didn’t start balancing my fiction writing with my business sooner.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Reading. There are soooo many more books I want to read I’m not sure I’ll live long enough to get through them all.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

Spending time with my hubby and my dog (who is sleeping next to me as I write this).

What scene from The Third Nanny was your favorite to write?

The twist at the end.

Interview with Robert Roth, Author of Into The Lightning Gate

What can you tell us about your new release, Into The Lightning Gate?

Into the Lightning Gate is a fun, fast-paced sci-fi action thriller. But the story goes deeper than that, exploring the meanings behind identity and purpose. I paid attention to the details and world-building and strove to give all the characters depth and dimension. It’s a story packed full of sci-fi adventure and intrigue. But it’s also a story about relationships, both in how the characters relate to one another and the world at large.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always loved books. As a young, queer person, books allowed me to escape from a dangerous and harmful world into some fantastic places full of wonder. But there was always something lacking. Even today, I often find myself missing characters that I could identify with and worlds I would genuinely feel welcome in. That pushed me into writing my own stories.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

The books I can’t help but return to over and over include N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy, Neal Stephenson's Seveneves, Rebecca Roanhorse’s Trail of Lightning, Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy, and Maureen F. McHugh’s China Mountain Zhang.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I would absolutely love the opportunity to talk with the late Robert A. Heinlein. I’d especially want to know how the world’s political and social development in the 30 years since his death would influence his writing today.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite writing moment is when the story suddenly takes on a life of its own. Then it sometimes surprises me and even leads me in unexpected directions.

What is a typical day like for you?

I try to write something every day, whether it's one of my works in progress, a blog post, or one of the ideas bouncing around inside my head. I have a day job working as a freelance designer, so I spend time on that, too. I enjoy reading and gaming in my free time.

What scene from Into The Lightning Gate was your favorite to write?

Each scene in that story has its own significance and meaning for me. A fun scene to work on was Cam and Tony spending some quiet time alone together on a hillside in the middle of nowhere. I used it to explore and develop their relationship with one another as best friends. And the motorcycle highway chase scene was also a lot of fun to write, too.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Create the art you want to see in the world.

Interview with Alec Peche, Author of Now You Don't See Me

What can you tell us about your new release, Now You Don't See Me?

In the past two years, I’ve branched out into reading in the Urban Fantasy, Lit RPG, and Paranormal Mystery genres. I also have fond memories of a 1970s show called The Bionic Woman. It was based on a novel called Cyborg by Martin Caidin. So I wanted to branch into the paranormal area, but I had more ideas of what I didn’t want in the story, than which paranormal talent I wanted for my protagonist.

My story is less dramatic than the Bionic Woman in that my protagonist was not re-built with computer parts. Rather, she has a paranormal talent that was activated by her near-death experience while she was a cop. After giving thought about how and where she could use this special talent, she signed on with the CIA and did hostage rescue for the agency. She’s a kick-ass, fifty-something asset to the CIA. She has to determine if nuclear bombs are being built, where, and why, and like in any good thriller, she’ll save the world at some point.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve studied people my entire life. I’m an introvert and I like to understand people. That’s evolved into making stories about people when I didn’t have enough information to know their true story. That grew into story-telling which is what being an author is all about – telling a good story that helps you escape into the pages.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

I like series as it’s nice to bond with characters over the length of many stories. My favorite series are: “In Death” by JD Robb – 54 books so far, Inspector Gamache by Louise Penny – 17 books, Gabriel Allon by Daniel Silva – 21 books, Spenser by Robert Parker – 50+ though they’re now written by his estate, and Ally Reynolds/Joanne Brady by JA Jance – 34 books in the two series.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Dame Agatha Christie would be my guest and I would ask her what it was like producing mysteries in a vastly different time than today. Specifically what framework constrained her writing at that time?

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Much like running, writing is something that can be done almost anywhere. There is a part of Now You Don't See Me devoted to creating nuclear bombs. I was flying at 35,000 feet using the plane’s Wi-Fi to help me understand how bombs work and what happened at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I kept one eyeball off to the aisle wondering when an air marshal would show up and handcuff me for reading about bombs while flying in a commercial jet.

I also enjoy learning. There is research I have to do for every book. I had longed heard that the world was worried about Iran enriching uranium. I didn’t understand what the meant or how it occurred. Now I do!

What is a typical day like for you?

I’m a full time writer. I have 17 books in print and digital, and 4 boxsets digital only. They become a lot to manage. I also spend at least half of my office time writing the next book which at this time in the second book in the Michelle Watson series.

I also serve on the National Board of Sisters in Crime and always have lots to do to help that organization grow.

What scene from Now You Don't See Me was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene to write was when Michelle and her partner were caught by an evil person and held at gunpoint. I really had the opportunity to explore Michelle’s special teleportation talent in terms of creatively saving her and her partner’s lives.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

What is to be will be. My mother, at 91, is suffering from a variety of ailments, but she tells me that phrase weekly. A more modern take on that is don’t sweat the small stuff or simply chill. I’m always a happy person humbled by the many opportunities that have crossed my path.

The Story Behind Bronx by Tess Oliver

By Tess Oliver

My story ideas come to me at the oddest times. Driving in a car, washing dishes, even standing in the shower. Not exactly glamorous, exciting locations but sometimes it's those mundane activities that let my imagination go hog wild. The idea for my newest series Western Smokejumpers came to me while I was hiking on a trail near my home in Colorado. My husband and I recently picked up our belongings, our dogs, and our goats and moved to the beautiful state of Colorado from the equally beautiful state of California. My kids live in Colorado too and any chance we can get closer to nature we take it. Colorado is the perfect place for that.

Unfortunately, just like California, Colorado is in the western United States a place that sees more and more heat and drought each year. Those extreme conditions fuel wildfire season, a season that grows longer and more dreadful each year. And each year brave men and women parachute into the untouched wilderness to stop the blazes before they chew up entire swaths of that nature I so dearly love. It occurred to me that those firefighters have to be some of the bravest, coolest, most badass people on earth. Sounded like the perfect fit for a new romance series. So the spark of an idea (metaphorically speaking) turned into a full fire and my newest characters, four smokejumpers who put their lives on the line on the job and fall in love off the job have come to the page. I hope you enjoy getting to know them and their stories just as much as I enjoyed conjuring them up in my imagination.
