Interview with Carissa Andrews, Author of Immortals

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Immortals?

Immortals is the third book in the Diana Hawthorne Supernatural Mystery series. This particular book was a crossover with my Windhaven Witches series (in particular, Soul Legacy). I was inspired to write this book the way I did because of my fans. I got a number of emails asking about when my main characters were finally going to be "together" - so the sexiness level was increased. But I also wanted to lean on the spooky, paranormal vibe of Windhaven, so there were a lot of threads being pulled that touched on the theme of immortality.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Immortals, what would they be?

Anything P!nk or Avril Lavigne! HA! In fact, I have a full playlist for Diana already. You can have a listen if you want!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love to read urban and paranormal fantasy! (So yes, it's what I love to write, too.) But I'm always reading nonfiction as well. I have to level up my knowledge. 😉

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm currently reading Sins of Surrender by KF Breene, but next up is What the Lady's Maid Knew by E.E. Holmes!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved the crossover scenes a ton because I got to play with what was really going on in Diana's head during those scenes. But the funnest are the ones with some comedic relief. So Renaldo and Kyros (the two assistants) are the most fun to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My biggest quirk is probably that I listen to an app called Binaural underneath the playlist for my book. I increase the beat to 42.0 Hz and rock out.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"Be the change you wish to see in the world." Followed closely by "Know Thyself."

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The family dynamic between all of the goofballs in Diana's world. They each have a part to play and their presence makes everything more dynamic.

Interview with Reed Logan Westgate, Author of Dirge of the Dead

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Dirge of the Dead?

Dirge of the Dead was written as the pandemic lingered on. Many people felt alone and isolated, myself included. I wanted to harness those feelings and use them to help shape Xlina’s evolution as a character. After being separated from her supports and with former allies turning into adversaries, Xlina must find the strength to overcome the odds on her own.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Dirge of the Dead, what would they be?

For Xlina, the Baku warrior that consumes nightmares, "Higher" by Creed and for Oxivius Soulforge "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Greenday.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love to read both Fantasy and Urban Fantasy. I write both, but my only published works at the moment are in the Urban Fantasy genre.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I recently picked up Melissa Snark’s Captain Hook and the Pirates of Neverland series that I am looking forward to.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene in Dirge of the Dead is the spawning chamber. When the characters realize how a demon is made. I is a powerful moment and the scene is filled with so many layers. It also contains my daughter’s favorite moment from the book: “tell them I said… It was the right thing to do.”

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to listen to instrumental music when I write. Especially when writing Oxivius I listen to dark gothic instrumental pieces.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Quote to live by, I have to go to my all-time favorite author. “Every day is a chance to start over. Any day can be bad, surely, but any day can be good, can be great, and that promise, that potential, is a beautiful thing indeed.” R. A. Salvatore

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

None of us are ever truly alone, so long as we carry the friends we have made along the way in our hearts.

Interview with Barry Kirwan, Author of When the Children Return

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write When the Children Return?

It's about the danger of super-artificial intelligences (AIs), and how they would see the rest of organic species. We're really at the beginning exploring AI technology. Stephen Hawking already warned about a potential 'singularity' with the coming of true AIs, that it could spell the end of humanity.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Science Fiction.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Old Man's War by John Scalzi. Reading it right now, love his vision and down to earth writing style.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

It's a section called 'the cusp', where an AI suddenly gains true sentience. It was kind of scary to write. But there's another favourite scene called Windphone, based loosely on a true story following the Fukushima nuclear disaster. A few readers told me they broke down reading that one.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I write early in the mornings. I mean real early...

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Two motto's actually: 'Just tell the story, no tricks,' from Raymond Carver, and 'Your characters should leave footprints in the snow,' from Hemingway.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That although we assume AIs will be our servants and do our bidding, they may think otherwise.

Interview with Math Bird, Author of Hidden Grace

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Hidden Grace?

This is the second book in the Ned Flynn series, so I wanted to continue his story and his character development. This is a different Flynn, a man changed by recent events and soon to be affected by the new dangers he’s about to encounter. Also, I wanted to explore that anyone, no matter how tough or infallible we believe them to be, can become a victim and how some people will hurt and manipulate others for as long as they’re able to get away with it.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I’m a huge fan of crime fiction, especially small-town crime and rural noir, which influences a lot of my fiction. What I love, alongside a cracking good read, is their ability to explore the human condition, the horrors and challenges of the ‘everyday’ and notions of place. They also provide the perfect vehicle to explore genre alongside literary themes–stories that can be appreciated on many levels, about people on the periphery crossing moral, ideological, and geographical borders.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Loads, but to name but a few…. The Long and Faraway Gone by Lou Berney A Darker Shade in Blue by John Harvey This Dark Road to Mercy by Wiley Cash Jesus Out to Sea by James Lee Burke And many more.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Hmm, that’s a difficult one, but I think (without giving any spoilers) the last scene between Flynn and Eddie as that’s where we witness the most significant change in Flynn’s character.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to start writing first thing in the morning, anytime before 9am, otherwise I find it difficult to get into the “zone” if the zone is an actual thing. Is that quirky, perhaps?

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Get on with it.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

First and foremost, I hope they find it a compelling, and entertaining read. Then, as this is the second book in the Ned Flynn series, I hope they enjoy the continuation of his story and his character development.

Interview with Dr. Meander Swotty, Author of Lower Education

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Lower Education: A Tale of Passion, Perseverance, and Missing Meatloaf?

I suppose writing Lower Education was kind of like therapy. You see, I used to be young and happy and idealistic. I wanted to change the world “one child at a time!” Then I went into academia. Years of pointless meetings and endless parades of unmotivated students have beaten me into the shell of the man I now am.

Also, I wanted to shine a light on how absurd and silly academia is. We take everything so seriously and debate every piece of minutia. Unfortunately, we tend to forget about the students and why we went into education in the first place. Above all, I wanted to write a book to make readers laugh. Hopefully, I’ve succeeded.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Lower Education: A Tale of Passion, Perseverance, and Missing Meatloaf, what would they be?

Oh! Definitely, Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive! It perfectly sums up what my protagonist goes through.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love to read everything — epic fantasies, biographies, tons of self-help books. Whatever people recommend, I tend to read! As far as my favorite genre to write, I believe genre is secondary to the story. I like writing about things that mean something to me, such as going through a middle-life crisis or how people with disabilities are treated in schools. I then choose the genre that fits what I want to say.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I received a bunch of great books for Christmas. I want to learn more about photography, so my wonderful wife got me a couple of books on composition and editing photos on the computer. My sons got me books on the Beatles and Norwegian history. I also have a stack of self-help books, such as The Art of Not Giving a F*ck. Then there’s the growing pile of books on autism and intellectual disabilities that I need to read for work. (I’m a special education teacher.)

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Boy, what a good question! Since most of Lower Education is based upon my career as a professor, there are a bunch of scenes that really make me smile. For example, I used to have an administrative assistant who was a stripper. She used to come to work wearing the most inappropriate outfits imaginable! Also, if any of us got a new chair for our office, faculty from other departments would steal it. I actually had to chain my chair to my desk so I’d have something to sit on.

Then there was my female colleague who used to use the men’s room because she didn’t want to walk to the women’s room on the other side of the building. She would come in and chat with me while I peed. Talk about awkward! I suppose my favorite scene in the book is when Dr. Rob Chudinski (my young protagonist) finds his inbox full of hundreds of e-mails. A faculty member in the Psychology Department had his lunch stolen from the communal refrigerator and mistakenly sent a bitchy e-mail to the entire university. The chaos that followed nearly closed the school!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

You know, I’m so glad you asked this! I thought I was the only writer with crazy habits! First of all, I can’t just turn on my computer and begin writing. I have to turn it on, pull up the word document of my latest project, and then I have to mess around on the internet for twenty minutes. I have no idea why, but I simply can’t sit down and start writing. It’s almost as if the page needs to marinate before it’s ready. I also have to have green tea in a specific mug sitting to my left and soft music playing in the background. If the mug is in the dishwasher, very little gets done until it’s clean.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I do have a motto! It’s from the Jimmy Stewart movie, Harvey. “In this world, you must be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant. Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.” I have it written on an index card taped to my office wall. I read it every time a student comes in to complain about their grades.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

My book is about a young academic who is very passionate about helping people with disabilities. But he cannot do what he needs to do because he gets caught up in a personality conflict with his department chair. The ordeal keeps escalating and escalating until my protagonist finally realizes that sometimes it’s best to focus on what’s important and give people what they want.

I suppose that’s what I want readers to remember after reading my book. Constantly butting heads and fighting over stupid things is usually counter-productive. Sometimes you have to change your strategy to succeed.
