Interview with Emma Lynden, Author of The Holiday Plan

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Holiday Plan?

The story behind the story is basically written right in! Chapter One of The Holiday Plan begins with an author receiving a rejection letter for her latest romance novel manuscript right on Valentine’s Day – which is exactly what happened to me on my first-ever submission.

I vividly remember reading that email and thinking how utterly unromantic and ironic the timing of it was, to have a love story rejected on a holiday all about love and romance... and then my imagination took over and the rest of the story flowed from there!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Holiday Plan, what would they be?

“Can’t Help Falling in Love” – it captures their romantic relationship journey perfectly!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

For both reading and writing, I’m a big fan of Romance – those tender, heartwarming stories and guaranteed happily-ever-afters are truly a balm now more than ever. I really enjoy reading mysteries as well.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My current read is Teri Wilson’s latest romcom A Spot of Trouble, and next on my list is Kerry Winfrey’s Very Sincerely Yours.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The meet-cute was so much fun! And in a completely different way, there’s a chapter much later on in the story, where my heroine takes my hero to a place that’s incredibly special to her. There are some sweet, nostalgic, deeply meaningful moments in those scenes that were truly beautiful to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I know a lot of authors need to have music playing in the background or the hustle and bustle of a busy café, but I actually prefer to write in complete silence – and my brain seems to do its best working out of plot problems in the odd hours of the night. Lots of two-in-the-morning breakthroughs while penning this one!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

A little progress each day adds up to big results.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

My biggest wish is to leave readers happier and more hopeful for picking up my book. One of the threads that’s woven throughout this story is that if you look hard enough, you can always find a special magic at work in the seeming mistakes of life, and that sometimes it’s the unexpected paths we’re forced to walk that end up leading us right where we’re meant to be.

Interview with Eleanor Chance, Author of Delicate Brushstrokes

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Delicate Brushstrokes?

I’ve been fascinated with the Renaissance era since I was young, and I read Irving Stone’s The Agony and the Ecstasy multiple times. When I later became a writer and read Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier, the idea for this story came to me and I couldn’t let it go. After years of research, the time was finally right to put the story to paper.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I wouldn't say I have a favorite genre since I enjoy reading several types of books, but my top three are Historical Fiction, Women's Fiction, and Fantasy.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Bookstore on the Beach by Brenda Novak, Spellbreaker by Charlie N. Holmberg, and One Day In Budapest by JF Penn.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The answer to that question would be a spoiler since it happens later in the book...

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I can't write unless I have instrumental music related to the genre I'm writing in, playing in the background. For this series, it’s lute and guitar music or the soundtrack from MEDICI, the Netflix original series.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

No matter our trials, tragedies or trials, we can choose happiness!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

We all have the tools we need to overcome our trials and tragedies. We just need to believe in ourselves and tap into that inner superhero, whether we lived during the Renaissance or today!

Interview with John Hundley, Author of Half Human

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Half Human: Spaceship Huey Adventures Book One?

My urban fantasy protagonist was left at the end of the series with the ghost of his ex-lover in his mind for the remainder of his thousand year lifespan. I wanted to see how it would play out in the far future.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Sci-fi, urban fantasy and epic fantasy. I like to write things I'd want to read myself.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I've got a ton of Patricia Briggs, Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong, Michael Anderle, Jerry Boyd, and Jenny Schwartz to catch up on.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Cliff Crane, undercover in disguise as the manager of a popular boy band, stalls for time by getting a happy ending massage while trying to carry on telepathic communications with two of his exes.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have a Bassett hound coffee mug. What's quirky about that? I need my coffee.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Try to stay in the moment. It's the only place you can truly live.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Be patient. There's another one coming soon.

Interview with Matilda Adler, Author of A Killer Opening

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Killer Opening?

I've always loved mysteries. My mother gave me an Agatha Christie as a Christmas stocking filler when I was nine, and of course, we sat on the sofa together every week watched Poirot and Miss Marple until we gave ourselves square eyes! Needless to say, I fell in love with mysteries. A couple of years ago I moved from my home in London to a Spanish island and – perhaps in subconscious homage to Christie’s Murder Under the Sun – a sun-soaked story of a reluctant but courageous amateur sleuth (Amelia Ferver) battling to solve a murder began to emerge in my mind.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Killer Opening, what would they be?

Mr Blue Sky by ELO for Leo, Legs by ZZ Top for Daisy, Perfect Day by Lou Reed for Amelia, and maybe Another One Bites the Dust for the story as a whole!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read all sorts of genres but my favourites are mystery and romance. I'm a sucker for a love story.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Maid by Nita Prose and Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The yoga scene (none of my characters were very flexible), closely followed by the scene where Amelia explains to Leo what happened to break them up in the past.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My bedroom is lush. It is filled with little knick-knacks and keepsakes I love. I write on a chaise longue, with at least one dog cuddled up with me. Beside me is a table for my tea and a timer. The tea is self-explanatory; the timer is to make sure I get out and do something other than write sometimes!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

In a world where you can be anything, be kind.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I hope readers will be thinking about Amelia's transformation from severely anxious and clinging to her comfort-zone, to courageous amateur sleuth. I hope they'll be excited to read what happens next in Amelia's life.

Interview with Matt Fatek, Author of New Hope

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write New Hope: Book 1?

My wife took me on a long, long walk through our city one afternoon in July or August 2021, and when we were walking through the park, I saw a man speaking giving an interview to some reporter during an outdoor book show or a similar event. I overheard, while he was answering a question concerning the story behind HIS book, that he had a lot of ideas for the past several years and never managed to put them down in writing because there always was work, other things to do, etc. And I remember vividly that at that moment I said to my wife that I too was going to write a book! And I told her the story I had in mind (which was the story I actually wrote 2,5 months later).

At first, my wife might have thought I had had a seizure or something, because of the seemingly out-of-the-blue idea, but when we talked a little, she became incredibly supportive. That day I wrote my first ten pages and that’s how I started writing this particular book. Plus I always, ALWAYS loved science fiction. And weird stuff.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

It is definitely science-fiction in general, but I also love a good hard military sci-fi novel, some horror books too. Basically, anything that is ‘out there’ and makes me use my flashlight when I get back to bed at night because otherwise, I might have a heart attack from the things my imagination seems to see lurking in the shadows.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

At the moment, that would be Julie Weil Thomas’ new The Forgotten Empire Book 6. Also Arrival by Jasper T. Scott (I love that author!), Solar Warden by Ian Douglas (I think I must have read every single book by that author and I love them!). And Veracity by Douglas E. Richards. Those are the books that are currently at the top of my long, long Kindle list. The rest of the list includes some 30+ titles that I purchase all the time and read whenever I find spare time.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

This is going to sound cheesy, but I think it was the epilog. In every good book the epilog, for me, is the place that makes or brakes the book. Either it makes me buy the second book or not. And I loved writing my epilog. Hopefully, it will be more of a ‘make it’ one for most, than the other option.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Cat and dog on my lap, definitely. Sometimes both at the same time. Fortunately, my dog is a Maltese so he’s tiny, and the cat fits anywhere and everywhere. So when the lap is taken, the cat sometimes goes behind the laptop and just lies there, basking in the computer radiator’s heat. Sometimes purring. Sometimes causing my laptop to overheat. A good luck charm like that he is.

Also I like writing in the middle of the night (like 2-3 a.m.), when nobody bothers me (no clients calling, no translation work to be done for ‘right away’ etc.). Also, I like writing in the middle of doing something completely different, like adding a sentence or sixty between answering emails or doing some chores. Of course, I always rewrite them later on, because they rarely are very good when written ad hoc. But I do it still, anyway.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

This is for everyone back at home, who read my personal posts on Facebook. I like using this particular phrase like A LOT. “We’re all going to die anyway”. I write it down in the most weird places, like in “Good morning everyone. We’re all going to die anyway. Have a nice day!”. And that’s just dark humor on my part. But even recently a friend asked me, before reading the book, if it contained this particular phrase, because if it didn’t, the book might not sound like me.

Interview with Molly Jebber, Author of Magdelena's Choice

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Magdelena's Choice?

Magdelena chooses a good man who can provide for her, but her father objects. He wants to choose her husband who will inherit his ranch someday. She doesn't agree that money conquers all.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Mysteries and Romance!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Where Magdelena has to make a life-altering decision that will have consequences either way she goes.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Trust in God in all things.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That they would've rooted for Magdelena and maybe identify with in empathy for the hard decisions she has to make, and in her trust in God.
