Interview with Greg Walters, Author of Demon Summoner
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Demon Summoner: Apprentice?
As a decades-long war rages in the Holy Roman Empire, field surgeon Martin shares a shocking truth with his new apprentice Gustav: Demons are real, and the casualties of battle are their reward for fighting for humanity. A revelation that changes everything...
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Since graduating with degrees in history and political science 20 years ago, I have dealt with historical material almost daily as a history teacher. Hence it was only a matter of time before I combined this with my passion for fantasy. The result is "Demon Summoner: Apprentice," a thoroughly researched historical novel, with a fair dash of fantasy and humor.
I am a big fantasy fan and I love historical novels because I work as a history teacher. That's why I write my own novels in this very genre.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
As always, these are a few books: currently “Amongst Our Weapons” (Rivers of London Book 9) by Ben Aaronovich entertains me very well. In addition, I'm reading various reference books on the French Revolution, because my next historical-fantastic novel will be set in that period.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I liked the first appearance of the demoness and her loose tongue. Actually, I like all the scenes where Mela the demoness appears, because I can bring in a lot of humor there.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I always listen to music loudly and with noise-canceling headphones, no matter if I'm all alone in our house or the dog and kids are making noises. A few years ago I was very inspired by underground hip-hop, now I tend to listen to jazz...
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Always be who you are!
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
In war, absolutely everyone loses. This has been proven not only by the Thirty Years' War, which I describe in my current book, but by all armed or military conflicts.

Interview with Krissy Daniels, Author of Average Joe
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Average Joe?
Average Joe has been a long time coming. Years ago, one of my favorite coffee stands changed ownership while I was on vacation. When I returned to find a nude barista serving my coffee, I was speechless and, I'll admit, a little embarrassed. It turned out the new owner was a high school friend of my husband. We had a good laugh about the situation, but that experience planted the seed. I knew I had to write a book about a bikini barista.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
My favorite genre to read is romance. Dark, edgy romances are my favorite.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
J.R. Ward's The Viper, Kristen Ashley's Making The Match, Jewel E. Ann's Memories Of A Life
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My favorite scene to write in Average Joe was the "good cop/ bad cop scene" with Joe's uncle. Marley is trying to find her son and believes Joe won't threaten his uncle for the information. So she tries to break a bottle on a glass table and use the jagged edge as a weapon but ends up breaking the table instead. What ensues is funny, though dark, but I love how Joe lets Marley take charge and only steps in when he feels her safety is compromised.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I don't have any quirky writing habits. However, I do write best on the left end of my couch. My husband likes to tease that I'm wearing the fabric down and should try a different spot occasionally.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Don't judge a book by it's cover. Marley is not a very likable character, but she has her reasons. I wrote her that way on purpose. We make assumptions about people every day without considering their stories. I hope that theme comes through in Average Joe.

Interview with Nora Houri‐Haim, Author of Cover Me With My Izar
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Cover Me With My Izar?
The inspiration for my book is my family folklore. All of my short stories are based on my family’s stories of immigrating from Iraq to Israel during the Great Aliyah of 1951-1952. The highly esteemed Russian-born Hebrew poet, Shaul Tzernichovsky, wrote: “People are nothing more than a small plot of land, the landscape of their childhood.”
I never had the privilege to lay my eyes on the landscape of our motherland, which came crashing down with the Great Aliyah; writing allows me to try and recreate it. I wanted to put pen to paper as a way to preserve our stories for future generations, so that they don’t disappear with the first generation, which is leaving us all too quickly.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Cover Me With My Izar, what would they be?
I would choose two songs: “Hava Nagila”, which was easy for immigrants to learn and which they enjoyed singing; I’d also choose Umm Kulthum’s “Enta Omry”, which is all about yearning for a beloved culture.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I enjoy reading short stories and fictional literature, and try to combine both styles in my writing.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
● Alice Munro--Too much happiness ● Fredrik Backman--A man called Ove ● Anthony McCarten--The darkest hour
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The scene where one of the female protagonists--Serah--achieves her plans and starts a new life, as well as other scenes.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I like writing in crowded coffee shops; when there’s lots of noise and people around I’m able to focus on my writing.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
The motto I live by is “Carpe Diem”-- Live the day!
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I’d like them to remember that even if you’re uprooted from your ancestral home, end up in a strange, foreign land and face endless difficulties, you can always plant new roots that will help you to succeed and thrive.
