Interview with A Mohit, Author of A Line In The Sand

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Line In The Sand?

Nilima Rani Das was a real person from Jhenaidah, Bangladesh, who took a loan of under $10,000 from Dr. Yunus's Grameen Bank with an interest rate of over 20%. She had to repay the loan in 46 installments and diligently paid 40 of them. Due to unavoidable hardship, she missed the 41st payment, after which Grameen Bank officials began to harass her, and the mistreatment gradually intensified. Unable to bear the threats and escalating abuse, Nilima, a 28-year-old housewife, took her own life, leaving behind her six-month-old daughter, Rani. Nilima Rani Das is the inspiration behind my book.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Line In The Sand, what would they be?

Imagine there's no heaven.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre is literary fiction with a deep spiritual underlying, and so is my writing.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

On top of my pile are Mother Mary Comes to Me by Arundhati Roy, Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie, and A Warden’s Path by Percy Pitzer.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The conversation of Irene with her dying mother in chapter eight, and her conversation with the Moulvi in chapter ten. I poured my heart into those two chapters, writing with teary eyes, and they still evoke the same emotion when I revisit them.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Oh, no, the most challenging part for me is zeroing in on the characters. Once I settle on the characters, I write down their ages, and that’s it. The characters tell their stories, which come to me like a torrent. I don’t need any muse, but it takes time for me to finalize the characters. Sometimes I add additional characters or tweak their age, but not often.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Yes, treat your neighbor as yourself.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Nilima Rani Das is not a singular person; Grammen Bank has been the cause of death for hundreds of destitute people whose lives the bank promises to improve. Grameen Bank has made Dr. Muhammad Yunus a fabulously wealthy person while destroying the lives of many poor people. It is time for the world to wake up from Yunus's multi-million-dollar PR campaign and see the truth. I just raised the flag; I hope others will carry it forward. At the end, I want to say: Don’t forget the Nilimas of the world!

Interview with Gloria Holt, Author of Youth

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Youth?

Turning 40 inspired this book. I became reflective about where I was in life and decided to channel those thoughts and explore, in a creative way, my insecurities about getting older.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Youth, what would they be?

This is the best question ever! Music is so important in Youth. Goldie, the protagonist, is a music snob, and her boyfriend, Teo, is a musician. Here are a few of the songs mentioned in the book: Summertime Sadness – Lana Del Rey; Fade Into You – Mazzy Star; Here Comes The Sun – The Beatles; Make You Feel My Love – Bob Dylan; From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea – The Cure.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I’m a big romance reader who favors funny, quirky, and tender stories—attributes I prioritize in Youth and in my writing.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Julia Song Is Undateable by Susan Lee; Finding My Way by Malala Yousafzai; The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia; Realm of Four Kingdoms series by Jayci Lee; Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The meet-cute moment for my main couple, Goldie and Teo. I made it a flashback in the chapter where their relationship starts to unravel. I thought it was a nice contrast and gives the reader an extra kick in the feels when everything is revealed.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Nothing quirky. Just leave me be, and I can write wherever, whenever.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“She had resolved never to take another step backward.” The Awakening by Kate Chopin

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want to leave the reader with a smile on their face and a sweet ache in their chest. They might never recall a line or any of the characters’ names, but that feeling of enjoyment is what I hope readers remember.

Interview with Corey Lynn Fayman, Author of The Deadly Stingaree

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Deadly Stingaree?

The original manuscript arrived at my front door several years ago with an audible thump. There was no return address, only my name printed in large block letters—COREY LYNN FAYMAN—and, as I had not immediately answered the door, I missed the opportunity to see who had put it there. I brought the envelope inside, placed it on the kitchen table, and opened it carefully. The contents left me both amazed and dumbfounded. Was this remarkable tale fact, fiction, or some devious combination of both? I suspect the latter, but some part of me wishes it were all true.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Deadly Stingaree, what would they be?

I Won't Back Down at The House of the Rising Sun

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Mystery, Crime Fiction, Historical Fiction, Popular Science. I've written all of these except the last one.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

John & Paul: A Love Story in Songs, On Fire and Under Water: A Climate Change Crime Fiction Anthology, All Tomorrow's Parties, Drive: A Novel, and Cooler than Cool: The Life and Work of Elmore Leonard.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

A scene where my 14-year-old protagonist escapes from his captors by sneaking through the maze of "The Cribs," receiving timely and creative assistance from the fallen women who ply their trade in the lawless and debauched Stingaree district of downtown San Diego in 1891.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My writing habits are incredibly boring. Early morning, 1 cup of coffee, start writing. In my office. The dullness of it probably helps.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“Crime is common. Logic is rare." (from Sherlock Holmes)

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That a small group of outcasts working together can defeat larger forces of ignorance and greed. And have more fun doing it.

Interview with Ivy Davis, Author of Broken

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Broken?

I wanted to write a really steamy romance book this time, and I believe I delivered. You’re gonna need a fan for this one!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Broken, what would they be?

Off to the Races by Lana Del Rey. It’s about a twisted, dark relationship between a young woman and her older boyfriend. My book deals with that kind of toxic relationship that is so much fun to read about.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love to read all different genres, from thrillers to romance to historical fiction. I love the variety to keep things interesting. But my favorite genre to write is romance. I just can’t help myself.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The next book on my TBR pile is The Second Chance Cinema by Thea Weiss.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene where the main characters first meet. The tension between them was so much fun to write. I always love writing first meetings. There’s just something special about it.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I wish I had some, but I usually just stick to my normal schedule that keeps me on track. And a lot of mental determination.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My motto is to stay focused, no matter what. If I can’t stay focused, then it makes it hard to get work done.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want my readers to have a fun time with this book. The main theme is about embracing darkness within us and I hope my readers enjoy escaping into something darker and dangerous.

Interview with Charlie Tyler, Author of The Cry of the Lake

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Cry of the Lake?

Close to where I live is a slimy puddle of water where King Charles I is said to have watered his horse after the Battle of Naseby. The well is steeped in history but rather underwhelming, and I started the book by thinking there should be a festival to mark its significance—and then wondered about the best way to cause havoc in the surrounding sleepy village. The emergence of a dead body seemed the perfect answer. The rest of the story evolved from the aftermath of that idea.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Cry of the Lake, what would they be?

Grace would have *Karma Police* by Radiohead, Flo would go for anything by *The Cure*, and Lily’s anthem would definitely be *You’re The Voice* by John Farnham.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My absolute favourite genre is crime thrillers or mysteries, whether dark or light.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m currently reading The Impossible Fortune by Richard Osman and Don’t Let Him In by Lisa Jewell.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I really enjoyed writing about Grace’s childhood and building up the scene that leads her to the boathouse — it’s such a pivotal moment in the story.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

When I’m creating, I have to get to my desk early, armed with plenty of coffee or peppermint tea. My dog’s always by my side — his basket’s raised just enough so I can scratch his head without ever looking away from the screen.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I love this saying by L.M. Montgomery 'Isn't it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?'

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

If you have to judge someone, then do it with compassion.

Interview with Kirsten Marion, Author of Crone of Flames

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Crone of Flames?

Crone of Flames is the second book in The Rowanswood Crones series. Having faced a major midlife reinvention of my own, the series grew out of my fascination with what happens when a woman’s world burns down—literally and metaphorically—and she has to decide what rises from the ashes. I wanted to explore reinvention and resilience through a sixty-year-old heroine who’s not discovering her magic for the first time, but rediscovering herself after loss, betrayal, and change. There’s a huge readership of women 50+ who want stories that reflect their strength and humor but also acknowledge the messiness of transformation. Olivia’s journey through fire—both emotional and elemental—became a mirror for that stage of life when everything familiar shifts and you have to reclaim your spark. At its heart, Crone of Flames is about rising—wiser, braver, and a little more dangerous than before.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Crone of Flames, what would they be?

“Phoenix” by Olivia Holt. It captures her journey from loss to renewal—the moment she understands that the fire which seemed to consume her life was really the spark of her own rebirth. Like the song, Olivia rises stronger, brighter, and entirely herself.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love fantasy and cozy mysteries, and I write in the same genre(s) as I read.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My Kindle’s a delightful mix of magic, mischief, and reinvention. Next up are The Rose Field by Philip Pullman, The Stone Witch of Florence by Anna Rasche, and The Retired Assassins' Guide to Country Gardening by Naomi Kuttner. Clearly, I have a soft spot for stories that blend the extraordinary with the everyday.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

One of my favorite scenes takes place in the fae realm, when Magnus—Olivia’s cat familiar—finally loses patience with her. In his frustration, he shifts into his tiger form and confronts her about the boundaries she’s failed to set. It’s a fierce, protective moment born of love and exasperation, and it forces Olivia to face a truth many women recognize: when we give too much of ourselves away, our power seeps out with it. Writing that scene was both raw and liberating—it marked the moment she began to reclaim her fire.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have a lovely home office, but I rarely write there. Most of Crone of Flames was written propped up in bed or curled on the couch with a strong cup of coffee in hand. There’s something about that cozy, unstructured space that invites the magic in—it feels less like work and more like stepping straight into Rowanswood.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

It’s never too late to spark a little magic. Reinvention isn’t a consolation prize for women over fifty—it’s their superpower.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I hope readers—especially women over fifty—finish Crone of Flames, remembering that fire isn’t just destruction; it’s transformation. Even after loss or upheaval, we have the power to rise again—stronger, wiser, and more luminous than before. Reinvention isn’t about starting over; it’s about owning everything you’ve already become.

Interview with David Boito, Author of Fatal Castle

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Fatal Castle?

I was inspired to write the book after my first visit to the Tower. The place just oozes history, and one thing that struck me was that the honorable Yeoman Warders—also known as Beefeaters—actually live on the premises. This thousand-year-old castle is their home. They’re retired military veterans who continue to serve in a unique role as guardians of a historic cultural treasure. I started thinking about the character of Clive and his daughter, who had moved to America, and the story grew from there.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Fatal Castle, what would they be?

I imagine Clive’s theme would sound like something from the Braveheart score by James Horner, while Ashley might jam to a song like Ellie Goulding’s “Army.”

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I enjoy thrillers and historical fiction.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I want to read the new novel by Ken Follett about Stonehenge! I think it’s called “Circle of Days.” Also looking forward to Adrian McKinty’s latest DI Duffy novel.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I enjoyed writing the scene where Clive and the Beefeaters face a stand-off with the London Met. Clive must prevent the police from invading the Tower or risk losing Ashley. The historic keepers of the castle (Beefeaters) must repel modern counter-terrorism commandos.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Lately, I have tried writing by dictation using my phone. It sometimes helps to get out of the office!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

This is a deep one, I try to keep in mind. “Stop ‘thinking’ – KNOW” Buddha. Sometimes a writer can overthink things rather than just write.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Loyalty to a cause is a noble trait, and if one wishes, it’s never too late to reconcile past bitterness with family.
