Interview with F.T. McKinstry, Author of The Crossroads Bargain
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Crossroads Bargain?
I’ve always loved gothic horror and fairytales; monsters, witches, curses, dark themes and otherworldly events find their way into most of my work. This story came to me out of nowhere and got a foothold before I could put it on the back burner. It’s old-world, balanced on the edge of the veil, and told from the point of view of a tormented soul who’s not quite here. It’s like one of those old George MacDonald fairytales where you’re shifting back and forth between the worlds and can’t be sure what’s real.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Crossroads Bargain, what would they be?
I created a playlist called “Lullaby of Woe” for this story. It includes goth, classical, traditional folk and an odd assortment of dark and airy tunes. I’m still tinkering with it, and it has become one of my favorite mixes.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Pretty much. High fantasy on the dark side, sword and sorcery, war, witchcraft, Northern European fairytales and mythology.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, Passage to Dawn (The Legend of Drizzt, #10) by R.A. Salvatore, Sword of Kings (The Saxon Stories, #12) by Bernard Cornwell, The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien (I read this when I was a kid, but want to reread it.), The Law by Jim Butcher, and Woodland Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland by Lisa Schneidau.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The most devastating one. It unleashed a wild landscape of impressions that reminded me of why I do this.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Living things: cats, houseplants, the birdfeeder outside, and a small aquarium on my desk with shrimps, snails and little fishes swimming and creeping around in a jungle of live plants. I also need music when I write, and have an empire of playlists that I use for background effects. Oh, and I find comfort in a messy desk.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” - Albert Einstein
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Trust your heart. It’s often the darkest forest paths that will lead you home.

Interview with Kimberly Readnour, Author of City Light, Starry Nights
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write City Light, Starry Nights?
Small town romance is a genre I happen to love. Since I live in small town, I guess it’s appropriate. Most of my catalog falls under sports romance, so I wanted to start a new “clean and wholesome” pen name with small towns. My brain raced with the ideas for this story, but it also rejected the idea of “clean and wholesome.” What came out was my spiciest book to date.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
My favorite genre is definitely romance! I read a few nonfiction titles on occasion, but nothing beats a couple falling in love.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
My TBR pile is a mile long. I download books but never have enough spare time to read them. I do have an ARC sitting on my kindle from a friend I can’t wait to dive into.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My favorite scene to write in this book was their meet cute. It’s fun and quirky and goes awry in the first chapter. Things only go downhill for them from there…or uphill. Depends on how you look at it!
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Quick answer is no quirky writing habits. Since I still work outside of writing, I have to steal time to get the words in. Unless you want to count coffee. I do like a steaming cup of joe sitting beside me while I write.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Years ago, I was at the bookstore looking for stocking stuffers for my children. On a bookmark, a shortened quote, “Never, never, never quit” from Winston Churchill stood out to me. Needless to say, each child received that bookmark, and I have repeatedly reminded them of his words. It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t live by that motto myself.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
These past few years have been weighed down with such heaviness, so I wanted to write a book that leaves people feeling good afterwards. Nothing beats a sweet happily ever after. That was my goal—leave a smile on the reader’s face.

Interview with Minerva Grey, Author of Smoke and Mirrors
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Smoke and Mirrors?
I began musing about writing a supernatural mystery series before I had heard of Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London series. After reading that and a few other urban fantasy novels, I realized that this was a genre that captivated me, but also that much of the literature on the market operated around the premise that the supernatural element was a secret in society at large, and that you as the reader were given entry into a hidden society through the book. I wanted to flip that on its head and explore what a world would look like where supernatural beings and magic were out in the open, influencing normal people and being influenced by them.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Smoke and Mirrors, what would they be?
Meares – “Blood On Your Name” by the Brothers Bright. Meares’ character is so involved in his fears, and how that plays out in terms of protecting himself and trying to overcome them. His relationship with fire and hounds, both a focus of this song, is complex and at times consuming.
Church – “The War Was in Color” by Carbon Leaf. Church, like so many men of his generation, was in many ways formed by his experiences in the war, and good or bad, they live on influencing his actions.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
For reading, absolutely my favourite is straight-up mystery novels. I cut my teeth on the early 20th century female mystery novelists, and they’re still a go-to favourite for me. Mystery-based genres aren’t always my favourite to write, though, since they require a much more planful approach than sometimes I feel up for. When I just want to let a story unfold, I tend towards general fiction with a hint of romance.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
The Village of Eight Graves and Gokumon Island by Seishi Yokomizo; Marina Hyde’s What Just Happened?!; anything in Elizabeth Ferrar’s Virginia and Felix series if I can find it.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The scene where, from Meares’ perspective, we learn who has been breaking the mirrors and why. This scene was intended to be the big spine-tingler of the novel, and I hope that the revelation achieved that. Until this point, the mirrors have been a small part of a larger and more sinister mystery, but now they leap to the forefront and we both understand the reason they were destroyed and have the opportunity to realise just how insidious the criminal is.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I can’t listen to music while I write, but I love some soft ASMR in the background, especially rainfall and thunder. The explosion of ASMR as a genre on the internet has been a gift.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
In a world where you can be anything, be kind.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Prejudice and hatred are ubiquitous in any heterogeneous society, but so is love.

Interview with Olivia Pharos, Author of Celestial Academy: Essence
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Celestial Academy: Essence?
I was watching Breaking Bad, and it occurred to me—what if there were a reality behind the street name of drugs? What if Angel Dust actually came from Angels? And what if there was only one young woman in existence who can see and collect Angel Essence, and turn it into a drug? A drug that is the most addictive and sought after one in the world, that all humans and demons go crazy for? And from then on, Wen White was born, and the literal post-apocalyptic world of Afterworld came into existence.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Celestial Academy: Essence, what would they be?
It's a Hard Knock Life, from the musical, Annie 😀 for Wen, my heroine, who is demon-owned, and became a drug dealer to buy out her Indenture.
An Arsonist's Lullaby by Hozier, Angels Like You by Miley Cyrus, and Dirty Thoughts by Chloe Adams for Wen and Godric's complex, agonizingly slow burn enemies-to-lovers romance.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Romantic fantasy and paranormal romance all the way, to both read and write.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
The Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo and House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
There are many, but I had a particular blast writing the drug-dealing, street urchin's heroine's first meeting with the all-powerful, morally-grey nephilim hero. It was the ultimate meet-cute (meet-ugly :-D), with him crash-landing in front of her, destroying half the street and literally knocking her off her feet, placing her under arrest, and dragging her to the Celestial Court to stand trial...on a leash! And what followed, with the beginning of their agonizingly slow-burn enemies-to-lovers passion, was such wicked fun to write.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I have to have one or both cats sitting by me (my lap-adjacent cats :-D) and I need to have some deep focus music playing in the back ground, and some steaming hot beverage.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Write the next book. Pursue the next dream.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
The character dynamics, esp. between the hero and heroine, and for them to ship them hard. 😀

Interview with Sharon Buchbinder, Author of The Vampire Billionaire's Secret Baby
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Vampire Billionaire's Secret Baby?
I have written many kinds of paranormal books with shapeshifters, but never one starring a vampire. I thought it was time to try my hand at that—but had to make it more than just “I VANT YOUR BLOOD!” I wanted it to have twist and a trope—or two or three. Hence, the vampire is a billionaire who also has a secret baby—and the baby can walk in the daylight. Yeah, that’s the ticket! Add an evil head of a vampire coven who wants that ability, and voila! The story is born.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love to read supernatural/paranormal stories, thrillers, and mysteries and that is what I write.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I read a LOT of nonfiction for my book research (yes, even fantasies with talking cats require some facts!) For fiction, in my Kindle, I currently have the following authors (to name but a few): S.A. Cosby, E.A. Aymar, Chris Bauer, Ef Deal, Sharon Saracino, S.W. Kane, Hank Phillippi Ryan, and all the Cat’s Paw Cove books.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The ensemble cast scenes are the ones I enjoy writing. When I bring the quirky residents of Feline Fine Retirement Home together, anything can happen—and it does.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
My quirky writing habits are more like a ritual. Coffee, water, two snoring pugs in my office who are terrible watch dogs, and a plan: write the characters first, then the plot.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Work hard, play hard, rest, repeat--and don’t be a jerk.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
The takeaway is in my dedication: This book is dedicated to families who embrace their differences, love one another, and help their children to grow to their greatest potential.
