Interview with Shanti Hershenson, Author of The Bane of Angelfall Academy

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Bane of Angelfall Academy?

The idea for Angelfall Academy, the setting for my novel, The Bane of Angelfall Academy, came predominantly from a dream. I recall running through the halls of an irregularly decorated school, with endless secret corners and luxurious amenities. There was a narrow balcony on one of the top floors, which later led to an important place throughout the story. At the time, it reminded me of something out of a nightmare—and, I mean, the dream might’ve been. I don’t really remember.

The idea for this school later intersected with another idea I had, about a boarding school for talented writers and a main character who didn’t belong. These two ideas were joined together and were the beginning of the rich and twisted world of Devan Cyrano and her adventures at her boarding school.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Bane of Angelfall Academy, what would they be?

When I first began writing this book, I created a playlist with songs that described the plot, events, and characters. Personally, I think that Devan Cyrano’s song would have to be Oh No! by MARINA. Byron Wells would definitely listen to Family Line by Conan Gray, and the friendship of the two can be described with Ribs by Lorde.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre for about as long as I can remember has been Science Fiction, although now, I tend to dabble in both reading and writing in other genres. When I started out, I primarily stuck to Sci-fi and the majority of the novel’s I’ve written fall into those categories.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m the type of reader to buy books at a higher rate than what I read, so my TBR is absolutely endless. With that being said, I’ve been meaning to finish reading War and Peace for the last two years.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There’s a scene early on in the book where Devan steps into Angelfall Academy’s bus and meets two of the novel’s main characters, Byron and Vi Wells. It’s a great introduction to both of their personalities, as well as gives the reader a thrilling introduction to the advanced technology and other marvels of the school.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have this writing habit, and while I think in some ways it's very helpful, it’s also slightly quirky. There’s a set of songs I have and I listen to each of them before I begin writing—or during the first few minutes when I sit down to begin for the day—and they help trick my brain into remembering that it's time to write. I’ve been doing this since I was in middle school.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I can't think of anything specific!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Beneath the heartwarming and sometimes perilous adventures that The Bane of Angelfall Academy brings, creativity and the gift of imagination—and how these things can get taken away very easily—is a heavy theme of the book. I don’t want to go into the messages too much, considering I will probably spoil at least half the book, but the subtle themes themselves are certainly ones to remember.

Interview with Stephanie K. Clemens, Author of The Daring Adventures of Honoria Porter

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Daring Adventures of Honoria Porter?

Honoria Porter is a young woman in the 1850s who wants to travel the world and experience life. She's in the process of the second, when she is caught kissing a duke in an alcove at a ball. Her mother finds her and insists on marriage. Honoria has other ideas, which involves her running away from home and traveling.

Her travels embroil her in different mysteries that she is good at solving. Each chapter starts out like a diary entry from Honoria, then goes into a first person POV fiction. I was inspired by Around the World in 80 Days and the show Miss Fisher Mysteries. I wanted a woman ahead of her time to explore the world, have dalliance without regret or guilt, and live life to its fullest. This is a prequel to my Ladies of WACK series, Book one introduces Honoria 20 years after the events in this book.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Daring Adventures of Honoria Porter, what would they be?

Man by Taylor Swift, Blank Space by Taylor Swift, and something by Lizzo.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Romance. No I love writing mysteries, I do read them as well but not as often as I read romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The newest book by Darynda Jones, Goddess of the Broken by my friend Jamie Dalton.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

In the second part I really liked writing the scene where Honoria put her wealthy friend in her place for not treating Honoria's companion like an equal.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I don't really think so. I do have a bunch of stones that help with creativity near me most of the time.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

You have to work hard to make your dreams come true.

Interview with Madelyn Scott, Author of Poison and Party Hats

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Poison and Party Hats?

These books were inspired by my dog, and I’ve always wanted to write a series with various holidays. Because people have a love/hate relationship with holidays. They are something we look forward to, but they can also be a pain. It took me years to do it because there are so many holidays, but I’m glad I finally did it.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Poison and Party Hats, what would they be?

I feel like Ollie the dog's theme song would be "Born to be Wild." Lucy's would probably be "Roar" by Katy Perry.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love mysteries – all kinds! I like cozies, and darker ones too. As long as it has a puzzle to solve, I’m there for it.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m currently reading Jennifer Ashley’s Kat Holloway series – Scandal Above Stairs is the audiobook I’m listening to, and I’m looking forward to reading the next Amity Allen Magical Kittens mystery – Kittens, Cupcakes & Conspiracy.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Everything with Ollie the dog in it. He’s inspired by my precious dog Delta. She’s as bad as she is cute!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I love to write to a TV screen with a crackling fireplace on it. It’s hot where I live so we never need a real fire, but I love how cozy it feels. I crank up the AC, get a blanket and “turn on” the fireplace. It gives me the perfect environment to write.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” —Maya Angelou

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I’d love for readers to remember the found family that Lucy develops throughout the series. The small town of Shongoloo brings Lucy a sense of community that she never expected to find.

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Skystone Chronicles: Dragon Thief?

We wanted to write a book that would've kept our teenage selves up reading until 3 in the morning. We just love dragons and magic, and wanted to take our own stab at it, and found some incredibly fun characters along the way.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Skystone Chronicles: Dragon Thief, what would they be?

Probably the song people would recognize is "Levitating," by Dua Lipa, but the real niche one is either "Skyway Avenue" by We the Kings, or "Go," by Cody Fry.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy by far. So yes. Fantasy gives you a chance to let limits melt away.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Malice, by John Gwynne for Blake, and Mistborn Era 2 for Raven (she's still catching up).

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Definitely the Ghost Lake Heist scene. It was such a blast to work our magic system into all of our favorite heist elements, and really see every character shine in their role... except for Jax.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Is it quirky to write only when your kids are asleep? Other than that, listening to character mood playlists while writing.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Choose Light, Burn Bright, Drive Out Darkness, Light The Way.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

To leave a review and buy the next one 😉

Interview with J. Traveler Pelton, Author of The Falconcrest Chronicles

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Falconcrest Chronicles?

My grandson wrote the first book in this setback when he was completing his home school requirements; no, all home schools do not require the participants write an entire book before they graduate, but when your grandma is an author and your grandpa has written a book and your aunt has written three books... Anyway, he wanted to do it in place of a dissertation and I allowed it. It took us several months to complete, rewrite, edit, polish, and prep.

He was completely surprised when it was published before graduation, and horrified when his ex-girlfriend’s father wrote a scathing review on how terrible the book was. He found out who write the review when the creep called and gloated about it. Yes, that review is still on Amazon. At any rate, the next three became his daydreams of where it ought to go and my writing them, since he was now involved in college, first jobs, and getting independent. He would talk out a plot idea, we’d jam over it, and I’d get the writing done.

All four books are in this volume. You’re going to love them.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Falconcrest Chronicles, what would they be?

If I saw this as being cast for a movie, I think I’d use the following music:

Let’s see, for Lucan, something along the lines of Running with the Wolves and for his wife Wind Beneath My Wings. For the intro to the movie, something from Aaron Copeland crossed with medieval celtic. For the dragon, Puff the Magic Dragon, I don’t know... We’ve got to have the 1812 overture in there somewhere-maybe in the battle scenes?

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love almost anything that isn't erotic, trashy or too violent; in short clean. Although, some of my early cozy mysteries had some crazy stuff in them. I leave people outside the bedroom door, so to speak and outside the wars.

As for what I write, cozy mysteries, historical fiction, fantasy, spiritual books and Sci-fi.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Oh my goodness, I have a stack of them. Most of them are mysteries.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I think the birth scene in the floating bubble was rewarding to think up. I like the scene where Lucas makes friends with the dragon.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have to get up and stretch every 45 minutes or I get writer's block - seriously. I have to move and think out scenes.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I try to help the hurt and loneliness in your heart by taking you away for a little while. There is SO much pain in this world.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Good wins. Love is eternal. Don't be afraid to make friends with someone different, you may discover a gem.
