Interview with Don Eron, Author of Killer Kowalski Takes the Mat

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Killer Kowalski Takes the Mat?

I knew I was going to write this novel from the time that some of the events occurred. I had been a voracious reader since turning nine, always wanted to be a writer, and thought it would make a moving story--and one that hadn't been told very often. Still, it took several decades and about eight other novels before I got to it. In my defense, one of the novels—which, in one version, was longer than a thousand pages—I consider to be an ancestor of Killer Kowalski.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Killer Kowalski Takes the Mat, what would they be?

Biggie can sing “Where Do the Children Play?” and sound almost like Cat Stevens, as long as he sings along with the record. Had it existed at the time, I think he’d like “Superman’s Song,” by Crash Test Dummies. I’m pretty sure Gloria Serpentino would love “Pink Pony Club.”

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I write (and read) character-driven literary fiction. I’d also read anything by Michael Connelly and was once addicted to Raymond Chandler and his better descendants. A reviewer once compared me (sort of) to Bellow and Roth. I’m not sure if it was intended as praise, but I took it that way.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My perennials are All the King's Men and Endless Love, to my mind two of the great novels of the 20th century, both of which I read about ten times when I was in my twenties, and would read aloud from to warm up before writing. I'm curious if I'd have the patience to read them now.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader, Robert Frost famously said. But aside from the emotional scenes, I really enjoyed writing the early scenes where Biggie and Gloria were feeling each other out over the phone, Biggie often misunderstanding (amusingly, I hope), but obviously enthralled.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I used to read out loud before I’d write, from books I wish I’d written, imagining I was before a large, adoring audience. I thought that helped sharpen my ear quite a bit.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Apropos of a coming-of-age novel, I’ve always been taken by something Iris Gaines says in Bernard Malamud’s first novel, The Natural: “I believe we have two lives, Roy, the life we learn with, and the life we live after that.”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Sometimes the people who will matter most to you are the people you'd least expect. Also, trying is better than not trying. Also, at the risk of sounding even more hackneyed and clichéd, it really is the journey that counts. And doing the right thing is its own reward. Finally, wrestling is a singularly demanding sport that deserves to be much more popular.

Interview with Rosie Genova, Author of Seeing Things

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Seeing Things?

The story features a down-on-her-luck boardwalk psychic whose childhood visions return when she takes on a mysterious elderly client who claims to be in trouble. It’s a much darker book than my usual cozy mysteries, which are lighter and funnier. I wrote its first iteration during the pandemic; my mom had died two years previously, and I found myself taking on more serious themes in my work. However, the setting of a Jersey shore town is right on brand for me!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Seeing Things, what would they be?

Funnily enough, the Rod Stewart song, "Maggie May," actually figures importantly in the story. As does Bruce Springsteen's "Brilliant Disguise."

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read everything: literary fiction, classics, romance, mystery, and thriller. I also write in several genres, but I would have to say that the most fun for me is writing romance featuring slightly older characters than the usual twenty-somethings.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I just finished Brampton Wick by Elizabeth Fair, a mid-century British author. I'm re-reading Pride and Prejudice for the umpteenth time and will soon dive into a couple of holiday romances.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There are a number of scenes in which my main character, Maggie, experiences visions. Each of those scenes was both a challenge and a joy, as I was flexing some writer muscles I haven't really used. The paranormal aspects of the story were great fun to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

After writing Seeing Things, I bought a statue of St. Lucy to sit over my desk. She's an important symbol in the story, but I also learned that she watches over writers!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

To paraphrase Ernest Hemingway (from The Old Man and the Sea): It's better to be exact than lucky--then when the luck comes, you are ready. I believe that honing my skills as a writer is a much better bet than relying on luck. (But when it appears, I'm ready for it!)

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That there are human experiences that cannot be fully explained by logic or science. I believe there are people out there with a kind of second sight.

Interview with Avanti Centrae, Author of The Picasso Job

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Picasso Job?

I wanted to write a HEAT-type heist thriller where the bad guys were good and the good guys were bad, but once I started to outline the story, I realized that there would be more conflict if two of the thieves were trying to kill the hero thief, who does have a heart of gold. The good "guy," a female FBI agent, has flaws but turned out not to be rotten as I'd initially envisioned. It's fun to see how a story comes to life as I outline and begin to write the chapters.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Picasso Job, what would they be?

Funny you should ask. Band on the Run by McCartney and Wings would be an apt theme song. Check out the Spotify playlist my publicist and I put together: Spotify Playlist

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love all kinds of action thrillers. Yes, that's the genre I work in.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

American Assassin (Flynn), The List (Berry), Damascus Station (McCloskey), and Secret of Secrets (Brown).

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The climax of the story. I know if it moves me, readers will also feel the emotional punch.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I love to outline while I'm hiking.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The one most relevant to this novel is to "Let it go." This motto is repeated by one of the side characters and mirrors the book's theme of forgiveness.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Hate will eat you up from the inside.

Interview with Tijan, Author of My Brother's Enemy

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write My Brother's Enemy?

I know someone who went through what Rain experiences in the book. She had no idea at the time, but once she learned the truth, it was eye-opening for her. The moment Rain discovers the term for how she grew up mirrors exactly what this person went through. Around the same time, I went to my first NHL game last year and was completely blown away—I fell in love instantly. Over the year, as I kept going to games and soaking in the energy and excitement, I also had a front-row seat to this person learning what the “lost child” role meant and realizing she wasn’t alone. Those two experiences stuck with me, and together they inspired Rain and Tyler’s story.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of My Brother's Enemy, what would they be?

Wake Up by Llunr, Labour by Paris Paloma, and They Called Me Murder by Crush Toast.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Currently, I’m obsessed with reading M/M romance. I bounce between mystery M/M and hockey M/M.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Sweet Obsession by Riley Hart, and the latest from Willow Dixon.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There were a lot of them for this book! The drunk couch scene was fun. When Rain and Tyler met Eric for the first time was another. And then all of the chapters when Rain was with her brothers — they were hard to write, but I enjoyed them at the same time. And any time Tyler had to converse with Dane was hilarious to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No. My only goal is to get the words written and edited. I'm getting older, and I'm starting to want to not work, so if I get the words written, then I'm just happy with myself. Maybe I should reward myself with a fun coffee mug after each book!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Keep going.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Of course, I'd love for them to be so wowed by my book that they have to tell their friends! But in all honesty, I think I mostly just wanted readers to have some clarity about a new type of pain that they might not have known was happening.

Interview with R.G. Roberts, Author of The Stars Shall Burn

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Stars Shall Burn?

“The Stars Shall Burn” grew out of my leadership experience while in the Navy. You work for good leaders, bad leaders, and sometimes — if you’re lucky — great leaders. I was fortunate to serve under several of the latter, but as an author, you always think, “Yes, and?” Since “The Stars Shall Burn” is book 7 in a series about how war and humanity intersect, I really wanted to take a deep dive into what happens when a leader and hero is pressed too far. How long before he cracks? How bad will it be? Will he see it coming?

The original idea for the series, “War of the Submarine,” hit me while I was a student at the Naval War College. A friend and I started spitballing about how World War III would start and what kind of war it would be, and my immediate response was: “World War I was the war of the battleship, and World War II was the war of the aircraft carrier, but World War III will be the war of the submarine.” This turned into an ongoing series not just about submarines, but predominantly about the people aboard them.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Stars Shall Burn, what would they be?

"This is Me," from "The Greatest Showman."

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Tossup between military thrillers and epic fantasy, and yes, I write both

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

David Weber, Toll of Honor; Deborah Harkness, The Book of Life; James D. Hornfischer, Who Can Hold the Sea; and Dr. Robert Ballard, Into the Deep.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

This is more than several chapters, a single scene, but the Battle of Perth is absolutely my favorite part. Wilson’s scenes in the battle include some serious heartbreak (I cried) and one of my favorite lines from the entire series.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Sometimes I need to change my writing location to get myself going, so my local Panera Bread is a favorite place to go. I also have a writing mug that has joking titles for every one of the fifteen drafts a writer goes through.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“I will try.”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Even the best leaders are human, and humans are fallible.

Interview with Kae Wagner, Author of Midnight at the Back Gate

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Midnight at the Back Gate (Book 1 in the Back Gate & Beyond Series)?

It started with a question: What happens when the “help” at a luxury community sees too much? Kelly Chowder was born from that spark. She's tough, guarded, and working the back gate while the elite toast with champagne for breakfast. I wanted to explore power, poverty, and the cost of hiding your pain behind a uniform.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Midnight at the Back Gate (Book 1 in the Back Gate & Beyond Series), what would they be?

• Kelly Chowder: “Control” by Halsey – she’s holding it together for as long as she can.
• Mac McKinsey: “Human” by Rag’n’Bone Man – military edge, big heart, carrying a past.
• Lillian Carter: “Confident” by Demi Lovato – glam, chaotic, and dangerously charming.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love reading modern women’s fiction with edge; stories about messy, strong, imperfect women. And yes, it’s exactly what I love to write. Throw in a little suspense and a good slow-burn romance, and I’m hooked.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

• The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave
• The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
• Every Summer After by Carley Fortune
• Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.

And let’s be honest, ten more queued up behind them.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The one where Kelly performs CPR on the unconscious doctor at the back gate. She’s terrified, running on instinct, and doesn’t yet know she just altered her entire path. It’s the moment she stops surviving and starts showing up for her own life.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Always coffee gone cold in a mug with my initials. Bonus points if I’m wearing fuzzy socks. I write best late at night, a single light at my desk, in complete silence.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“Speak your truth, even when your voice shakes.” Especially true for fiction.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That the past doesn’t get to define you. You do. Even if your hands are still shaking when you take your first brave step forward. Life is full of second chances. Give them and you'll get them.
