Interview with Robert J. Mendenhall, Author of CNI Classified
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write CNI Classified?
Code Name: Intrepid is my pulp-style action and adventure series. I have five novels and one collection of short stories written in the series. I wanted to expand the CNI universe by inviting other authors in my genre to lend their unique voices and styles to the characters. The result is this first volume.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love thrillers, police procedurals, science fiction, and historical fiction, particularly novels taking place in the 1940s. My favorite genre to write in is action/adventure.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Jean Davis' Narvan books 2-3, Will Patrick Murray's "Back to Mars," and Ken Follet's "Eye of the Needle."
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My story is "Case Gray." My favorite scene is when Rick Justice and his team storm the lab.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Not quirky, but I like to listen to movie sound tracks when I write.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
"The harder I work, the luckier I get." Kevin J. Anderson.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Sometimes zombies are the victims.

Interview with Kimberly Dean, Author of Dream Lover
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Dream Lover?
I started this series early in my career, and Dream Man (Book 1) is special to me because it was my first full-length romance novel with a big publishing house. To tell you how long ago that was, the concept of the Dream Weavers came to me as I was watching an episode of Charmed involving a Sandman. The idea felt fresh and unique, so I began researching sleep and dreams. Once I discovered the Oneiroi, dream gods from Greek mythology, the idea became fully formed. I wrote two books at that time, but then moved on to other things. The concept never left me, though. I really loved the Dream Weavers world, especially the Sunday morning meetings of the Oneiroi at IHOP. I’d think of the other brothers and what their stories might be.
This year, the ideas came faster, and they were more vivid. I knew it was time to return to that nighttime world. Dream Rider was released in May, and Tony and Hunter were big supporting characters in that book. They had a spark that I really wanted to explore, that enemies-to-lovers friction. I jumped into this book immediately afterward, and the dynamic between Tony (a Dream Weaver) and Hunter (a moon goddess) made Dream Lover a super-fast write. I enjoy the two of them together, and I think readers will, too.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Dream Lover, what would they be?
Tony is too complicated for one song, but Hunter’s would totally be Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
My favorite genres to read and write are the same: contemporary romance and paranormal/fantasy romance.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros and Darius by J.R. Ward are on the TBR paranormal/fantasy pile. Dear Stranger by Winter Renshaw is on the contemporary one.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Tony and Hunter start out hot and heavy, with their attraction to each other pushing them past their animosity. My favorite scene, though, is when the two of them go out stargazing one night and start moving past the physical. They are interrupted by uninvited guests in a way I found humorous and endearing.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I’m at my most productive when I go old-school with technology. If I use my laptop, email and the internet are always there tempting me, so I use a word processor called an AlphaSmart Neo that I bought off eBay. All I can use it for is writing, and it only shows the last four lines, so it keeps me moving forward. When I have a draft of a chapter, I download it to my laptop and begin the editing process.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Eye of the tiger, which to me means focus on what you want and go for it.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Your biggest enemies might not be that different from you.

Interview with Lucy May Lennox, Author of Good Looking
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Good Looking?
I wanted to tell a different kind of love story, about unusual people, but showing how they are still basically the same as everyone else.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Good Looking, what would they be?
Abby: "How Soon Is Now?" by The Smiths (this actually appears at a major moment for her in the book).
Nick: "You Are the Everything" by REM.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Right now I'm reading so many webcomics. I wish I could draw but I can't, so novels it is for me as an author.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
The World Between Us by Ruth Madison and Break Me Out by Avery Kingston.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Any of the comedic scenes. I love the absurdity of the college years, where you feel like you should be an adult but really aren't yet.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Like most working moms, I only have time to write after my kids have gone to bed, sigh.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
There's no one right way to love someone, we all just have to figure it out for ourselves.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Everyone should be free to express their sexuality in whatever way feels right to them, as long as it's consensual and respectful. We all need to be more generous and understanding of others and ourselves when it comes to sex and sexuality.

Interview with Vishnul Jain, Author of The Future King
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Future King?
It's about redemption. It's about second chances. The story of King Arthur and Merlin has always ended in tragedy with Arthur fated to die after the Battle of Camlann. The legend of the "Once and Future King" I felt was left unfinished. This book, and ultimately this series, picks up after that tragedy and changes the story into optimism...and ultimately redemption of the hero.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Future King, what would they be?
For Merlin I'd say it would be "Can't Stop the Feeling" by Justin Timberlake.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Definitely fantasy. There's so much left to the imagination.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
"The Ash Princess" by Laura Sebastian
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Chapter 5. Merlin in Avalon. It's full of imagination, magic, sacrifice, and hope. It's a story within a story.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
My favorite keyboard and my lucky mug full of cold Mountain Dew. It gets the imagination flowing!
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Live and let live. If everyone does this, the world would be magical.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Pick yourself back up. Dust yourself off. Try again. Learn from your mistakes. There's the victory.

Interview with P.G. Kassel, Author of Siphon
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Siphon?
I grew up in Pasadena, California, and lived there for most of my life. Pasadena is well known for its annual New Year’s Day Rose Bowl game and the Rose Parade. As a resident, I’ve attended the Rose Parade many times. One year, the Tournament of Roses Association enlisted me to shoot a documentary about the activity on the parade route from sundown New Year’s Eve to the starting time of the Rose Parade the next morning. It’s hard to imagine the craziness of hundreds of thousands of people partying all night long along the parade route unless you've been there. The night I shot the documentary, the writer in me thought it would be cool to write a story with a climactic chase scene that takes place through all that madness. That idea became the basis for the “Siphon” story and Cayden March.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Siphon, what would they be?
Theme songs? Well, maybe “Living On A Prayer” by Bon Jovi for Cayden March, but a version not emphasizing the romance. For Kate James, since she loves fashion styles from the 1960s, let’s go with “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair).” Wow, both of those songs really date me.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Well, I really enjoy thrillers along the lines of James Patterson, Lee Child, and David Baldacci. And I really enjoy supernatural thrillers as well. And I enjoy writing thrillers, but at heart. I’m just a storyteller. If I come up with an idea for a good story, I’ll want to write it. The genre becomes unimportant to me. The two novels in my Stoker’s Dark Secret series and “Siphon” are all thrillers. But when I was writing screenplays for Hollywood, besides thrillers, my stories included young adult comedy adventure, romance, World War II adventure, and straight-out comedy. I don’t like to limit myself, so I’m sure you’ll see some books coming from me in the future that aren’t thrillers.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I have several Jack Reacher books on my list. And several of Mark Dawson’s John Milton books I need to get to. I have to admit; I haven’t been doing as much reading as I’d like because I’ve been so busy writing “Siphon.”
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Any of the scenes featuring my lovely psychopath, Cyn, were great fun to write. I think writing villains is always a blast. You know, thinking up outrageous ways to make them truly fascinating but horrible characters.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Nope. I just try to be disciplined enough to write five or six days a week.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I really love Dorothy Parker’s, "If you have any young friends who aspire to become writers, the second greatest favor you can do them is to present them with copies of ‘The Elements of Style.’ The first greatest, of course, is to shoot them now, while they’re happy.”
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I just hope my readers will come away feeling satisfied and entertained. And I hope they like my writing style.
