Interview with Allyson Lindt, Author of Dev Girl

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Dev Girl?

I love small town stories--there's a unique kind of closeness with all the characters. And I wanted to tell a story of three close friends who had drifted apart as they got older, and didn't think they could get their past back. But as they compete in a scavenger hunt, as a team, they realize there's a bond between them that can't be severed. I love the idea of that kind of connection between people.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Dev Girl, what would they be?

Onyx would be Cake's Never There. He's missing his best friends so much when the book starts. Alys's would be Could've Been Me by The Struts. She's so afraid of missing out, she almost does exactly that. And Maddox... he'd tell you his song is Baby Shark, but it's probably Friday I'm In Love by The Cure.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love so many genres, but my absolute favorites are contemporary anything--romance, fiction, fantasy--and urban fantasy. I love to write the same things I love to read, though I probably read a lot more urban fantasy than I write.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Up next for me is A Moonlit Serenade by Alexa Padgett

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There's a scene toward the end of the book where the main characters have gotten together with a lot of their friends, to recreate the album cover for Exit Stage Left by Rush. It's non-stop banter and fun, and it was so great to be in the room with all of them as that scene played out.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I really like to go to coffee shops to write. I have a few that I rotate through, and I prefer to be there early in the morning. A large coffee and a blueberry muffin and I'm set for words for a few hours.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Always be willing to adapt.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

It's not always easy to figure out who we are and where we belong, but when we do, it's worth it.
