Interview with Joseph Souza, Author of The Anchorman's Wife

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Anchorman's Wife?

I’ve always been interested in human psychology and the duality of the mind. Also, the effect of nurture versus nature on the development of a person’s character. Then there’s ambition and how far we will go to succeed in the endeavors we undertake in life. All these questions are important themes in The Anchorman's Wife. As Shay’s memory falters from the attack perpetrated on her, she begins to question herself, her life, and her marriage to Gideon Wells.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Anchorman's Wife, what would they be?

“I Will Survive,” by Cake.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

All crime fiction and high-level psychological thrillers.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

THE ONLY ONE LEFT by Riley Sager

THE PERSONAL ASSISTANT by Kimberly Belle

THE FURY by Alex Michaelides

THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY by Erik Larson

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Lol! I can’t tell you because I’ll give away the plot twist if I do.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I must write 1300 words a day. And if I misspell a word, I have to totally erase the word and rewrite it. It feels I taint the manuscript if I don’t totally erase it and start over.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.” Stephen King

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That in the end, you get to choose your own destiny. You get to decide if you want to walk the path of evil or good.

Interview with Gregory C. Randall, Author of The Marigold Gang

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Marigold Gang: The Four Bodies in the Freezer?

A restaurant we go to for breakfast always has a morning group of men who get to together once a week. Maybe they are old friends, maybe a church group, maybe a lot of things, but what they do have is an old friendship. I believed there might be a story surrounding these fellows, not so much as to how they became who they were, but what would happen when they are confronted with a challenge.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Marigold Gang: The Four Bodies in the Freezer, what would they be?

Any of the songs from the mid-1960s, early rock and roll and Motown.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre (at the moment- again) is science fiction, especially John Scalzi. My favorite genre to write is historical fiction/mystery – especially around World War II.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

John Scalzi’s Smarter Villain, Michael Connelly’s Resurrection Walk, Jim L’Etoile’s Face of Greed, a couple by Ben Winters, Reed Farrel Coleman’s Sleepless City, and a dozen more.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When the Marigold Gang first enters the house and begins to understand the scope of what they are facing. The narrator refers to the process like they were opening Tutankhamun’s Tomb.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

None really, I do enjoy during the warm summer to sit out in our garden with a cigar and write, quite a change from the day-to-day desk work.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

We create our tomorrows by what we dream today! This phrase hangs over the door’s lintel to my writer’s studio. I picked up the aphoristic sign many years ago, and it still reads true.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

We will all be old someday (sooner for some than others), and we should not limit ourselves to what others say we should be, but how we want to be.
