Interview with Neil V. Young, Author of Children of the Stars

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Children of the Stars?

Simply put: Fitting in. That’s what it’s all about when you’re young. I grew up separated from ‘normal’ kids by going to a uniform wearing private school. It doesn’t seem like that big a deal now, but when you’re young, anything that sets you apart from others is incredibly traumatic. I always felt like the outsider and it had an impact on my sense of self, so I guess I went with that, taking it to another level with Dayton. There is a lot of me in Dayton.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Children of the Stars, what would they be?

"In This Diary" by the Ataris rings in my head. The line ‘Being grown up isn’t half as fun as growing up. These are the best days of our lives’ because it kind of brings Dayton’s reverse experiences to light. He’s a grown up who’s becoming a teenager and finding the fun in it all. I’m also partial to Rush’s "Subdivisions", an old song to be sure, but it centers on fitting in, just like my novel. "Sprawling on the fringes of the city in geometric order an insulated border in-between the bright lights and the far unlit unknown", Dayton is literally coming in from the great unknown. Space is vast, dark and scary, as it truly is to most people on Earth. And it’s Dayton’s home. There’s also "Subdivisions in the high school halls, in the shopping malls, conform or be cast out" just as in the story, Dayton conforms and eventually gets some form of acceptance. Zara refuses, and is cast out.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Science Fiction (not sci fi) is always my go to. I do also like social and political humor, as I incorporate both in heavy doses into my writing. Because in the end, I believe science fiction changes the technology and social contracts, but human nature, desires and insecurities stay very much the same.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Lolth’s Warrior, Caliban’s War, Will Destroy the Galaxy for Cash, Stormbreaker, Woken Furies, Red Seas Under Red Skies, The City of Lost Fortunes, and that’s just what’s piled on my nightstand. I think I have a problem!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Oh, wow, a good question, and one that’s not too easy to answer. I enjoyed writing so much of this book. If I had a fav, it would be when world’s collide, literally Dayton falls from orbit, crashes into a shopping mall, there’s chaos everywhere, and his mind keeps drifting back to Allyson. It kind of reminds me of those rare moments where you just see someone and think ‘that’s the one.’ I think we’ve all been there when we see someone who just intrigues us no matter what we’re going through. We might not admit it to our friends, but it happens.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I get out, I write more. For that, I like coffee houses (not Starbucks!). I think the most productivity I’ve ever had was at a stone bench in the central park in Galway, Ireland. Galway is known as the city of writers, and I picked up on that. The atmosphere does a lot for my creative juices. Long flights are great too.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

When you’re hot you’re hot, write. When you’re not, don’t write. Forcing yourself to write can only lead to frustration and doubt. Not good.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Life is full of ups and downs, changes and twists. Keeping your wits and attitude right can be hard under any of those circumstances.

Interview with Becheru D. Dan, Author of The Worlds of Origin

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Worlds of Origin?

The story behind this book is deeply personal. It’s my first novel, and I’ve been working on it for what feels like forever. The idea began as a small seed—a fascination with the rise and fall of civilizations and the mysteries of the cosmos. Over time, that seed grew into an epic tale spanning 900,000 years, blending elements of science fiction and fantasy. I was inspired by classic space operas, but I also wanted to explore deeper themes like the nature of power, the consequences of prophecy, and the fine line between science and magic. It’s been a long journey, filled with countless revisions and late nights.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Worlds of Origin, what would they be?

I might be in an Imagine Dragons period right now, but I’d pick “Radioactive” for Mira because it really captures her journey of unearthing dangerous secrets and facing powerful forces that change her understanding of the world.

For Mer, I’d go with “Demons.” It reflects her internal conflict and the struggle between her identity and the darker forces at play in her life.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Definitely yes—science fiction is my favorite genre to read, and it’s also my favorite to write. There’s something about exploring the vast possibilities of the future, other worlds, and the unknown that captivates me. Fantasy comes in a close second; I love the way it allows for boundless imagination and the creation of entirely new realms and mythologies.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My TBR pile includes The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, which I’ve been eager to dive into. I’m also planning to revisit The World of Null-A series by A.E. van Vogt—it’s one of those classics that I find reveals new layers every time I read it.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene to write was definitely the last chapter. It’s where everything comes together—the big revelations, the tying up of loose ends, and the final pieces of the puzzle falling into place. After spending so much time building the story and developing the characters, it was incredibly satisfying to bring it all to a conclusion that feels both surprising and inevitable. It’s the moment where all the threads connect, and the true scope of the story is revealed.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not yet—this was my first novel, so I’m still working on developing my quirky writer habits! Since writing isn’t my full-time gig, I haven’t had the chance to cultivate any lucky mugs or acquire a writing cat.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I have several, but if I had to pick one off the top of my head, it would be: "Certainty is the privilege of uneducated minds" by Cassius Jackson Keyser. It reminds me to stay curious and open-minded, always questioning what I think I know.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

It would be the idea that even in a vast, mysterious galaxy, the choices of individuals can shape the fate of everything. The interconnectedness of every character's journey and the idea that history is shaped by both grand events and small, personal decisions - that is something I hope lingers with readers.

Interview with Abby Goldsmith, Author of Megacosmic Rift (Torth Book 4)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Megacosmic Rift (Torth Book 4)?

The Torth series is my 6 book magnum opus about freedom, group think, mob justice, interpersonal power dynamics, and individualism. I wanted to deeply explore these issues through the exaggerated lens of a hive mind galactic empire and those who rebel against it. Any kid who felt like an outcast supergenius can probably relate to Thomas!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Megacosmic Rift (Torth Book 4), what would they be?

For Thomas? "Run Boy Run" by Woodkid.

For Ariock? "When Worlds Collide" by Powerman 5000.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Progression Fantasy and Sci-Fi epics. I love reading them and writing them.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

We by Yevgeny Zamyatin, All the Skills 4 by Honour Rae, The Crypt by Scott Sigler.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

In Megacosmic Rift (Torth Book 4), there's a major linchpin moment where one of the main characters switches sides. I anticipated that scene for years.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

There's a birdbath and birdfeeders outside my window, so I have something to look at when I glance up!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Hope becomes cope, but never surrender.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Freedom of thought is vital for a healthy civilization.

Interview with GL Robinson, Author of I Have Always Loved You, a Second Chance Regency Romance

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write I Have Always Loved You, a Second Chance Regency Romance?

It's my 77th birthday the day my new book (I Have Always Loved You, a Second Chance Regency Romance) launches. At my age, inevitably you think about "do-overs" and I thought it was time for a second-chance romance in a Regency. Jane Austen did one in Persuasion, but I don't know of another. Or perhaps I just haven't read it!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of I Have Always Loved You, a Second Chance Regency Romance, what would they be?

This was fun! For Octavia, who loves Dorian from the moment she sees him, "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers (yes, I'm that old!) and "Your Song" by Elton John.

For Dorian, who comes to regret his choices, another Elton John (he seems to have a song for any occasion!) "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word", and Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time".

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I like reading Regencies but I'm really fussy about correct language (no terms that weren't in use in the early 1800's, and historical accuracy. The trouble is, I'm a linguist by training, so I notice those things.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I like books that make me laugh, especially if they are also serious. I just finished Anxious People by Fredrick Backman, and I've got The Sellout by Paul Beatty and David Sedaris' Calypso on my nightstand. Trouble is, when I start reading anything, my mind flies off at tangents. Ideas always occur to me and I start plotting!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I enjoyed writing the scene when Dorian's ex-wife comes to find him when she hears he's inherited the title. That made me smile! .

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No, I'm boringly ordinary. I can write anywhere and have no particular requirements. Just a laptop and WiFi. I can't write longhand because of arthritis and I need WiFi to look stuff up. I've been known to spend 10 minutes finding out when a particular word came into the language. I told you, language accuracy is important to me!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Bob Dylan's "But I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now." I first heard that line in his song back in the 60's and it has become truer and truer the older I get.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

No one's perfect and you have to be ready to forgive. You cannot live with simmering resentment. It ruins your life.

Interview with D.F. Jones, Author of Soul Love

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Soul Love?

I love the idea of time travel and that our souls carry the wisdom of multiple lifetimes. The spark for this story came while working on the Shifting Magic anthology with a group of terrific fellow authors, I wrote Soul Love's short story and the characters kept speaking to me. Summer Jewel, my protagonist, mirrors my love for charming hometowns with her bookstore in the town square. Every day, she witnesses the enchanting transformation of an old Victorian house across the street by a skilled interior designer. The designer's open invitation to explore the house alone becomes Summer's secret adventure. One day, her curiosity leads her to a mysterious attic door that exudes an irresistible allure. Her explorations don't go unnoticed, and the enigmatic owner, Rogan Randolph, soon extends a warm invitation to dinner in the now-restored home. A tornado brings them closer, igniting a whirlwind romance that Summer never saw coming. Yet, the attic's pull proves too strong. Sneaking back, she's catapulted back in time, awakening in the early twentieth century, where she confronts a startling truth: her soul inhabits a different body. As she delves into the mysteries of reincarnation, she discovers that love transcends time, binding souls across lifetimes. Her journey is a heartfelt exploration of past lives and the enduring power of love.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Soul Love, what would they be?

For Summer, it’s Ms. Lauryn Hill’s version of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.” It’s soulful, captivating, and just like Summer, it makes you feel like you’re in the presence of something truly magical. Plus, she’s got that kind of charm you can’t look away from—just try, I dare you!

As for Rogan, he’s got the smooth, laid-back vibes of Merle Haggard’s “That’s The Way Love Goes.” Rogan's the kind of guy who rolls with the punches, takes life as it comes, and knows that love, just like his song, is a timeless classic. It’s the perfect tune for a man who can sweep you off your feet with a crooked smile and a well-timed wink.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to both read and write is Fantasy. There's something incredibly captivating about creating and immersing myself in worlds where anything is possible: realms filled with magic, mythical creatures, and epic adventures. Whether it’s angels and demons, time travel adventures, or witches and wizards, I love exploring fantasy's limitless possibilities. While Fantasy is my go-to genre, I also have a deep fascination with nonfiction books about otherworldly phenomena. These books fuel my imagination and often inspire my stories' supernatural and mysterious elements. Exploring real-world accounts and theories about the unknown adds depth to my writing and keeps me constantly curious.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My current TBR pile? It's a delightful mix of magic, mythology, and a touch of the classical!

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke: Who doesn't love a hefty dose of English magic with a side of Regency-era intrigue? Plus, these two magicians' rivalry is too good to pass up!

The 12th Planet by Zecharia Sitchin: I’m diving into ancient astronaut theories and the mysteries of our origins. Sitchin’s work is like catnip for my curiosity about otherworldly phenomena.

Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney: This classic epic poem is a must-read, especially when translated by a poet as brilliant as Heaney. It’s time to get reacquainted with Grendel and brush up on my Old English heroics.

The Ides of March by Thornton Wilder: Historical fiction meets epistolary style? Yes, please! Wilder’s take on Julius Caesar and the political machinations of ancient Rome promises to be both insightful and entertaining.

The Sandman: Act II by Neil Gaiman, adapted by Dirk Maggs: I’m ready to be whisked away to the dream realm once again. Gaiman’s storytelling, paired with Maggs’ audio adaptation, is pure magic—and I can’t wait to see what Dream has in store this time around.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

It's when Summer lands back in 1926 and finds herself with the past Rogan, while the present-day Rogan is dealing with a serious case of jealousy—of himself! It’s such a deliciously twisted dilemma. Imagine being jealous of your own past! Rogan’s reaction is both comical and endearing, showing how much he cares. Meanwhile, Summer is utterly unfazed by the whole situation. To her, it’s not a problem because, well, Rogan is Rogan, whether he’s from the past or present! This scene is one of my favorites because it’s a perfect blend of humor, time travel quirks, and that undeniable connection between Summer and Rogan. Writing it made me smile, and I hope it also brings a smile to my readers!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Do I have any quirky writing habits? Oh, absolutely! My favorite spot on my couch is practically my writing throne. But here's the secret sauce to my setup that I've never disclosed before: I use a donut hole pillow for my fanny and a pillow under each leg. This little routine might sound quirky, but it’s a lifesaver! It reduces the pressure on my spine and lets me work long stretches without pain. So, if you ever picture me writing, imagine me all comfy with my pillows, typing away and dreaming up new adventures!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My tagline, "May Love Light the Way," is more than just a phrase—it's a guiding principle in both my life and my writing. I believe that love has the power to illuminate even the darkest paths, bringing hope, compassion, and understanding. Whether I'm crafting a story filled with magic and adventure or navigating everyday life, I always try to let love lead the way. It's a simple yet profound reminder to stay positive and embrace the light, no matter what challenges come my way.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The power of love and hope can transcend time and overcome any obstacle. No matter the challenges my characters face—whether they’re battling supernatural forces, navigating the complexities of time travel, or unraveling secrets of the heart—love is the constant force that guides them. If readers walk away feeling inspired to believe in the strength of love, to hold onto hope even in the darkest moments, then I’ve done my job. Because in the end, love really can light the way.

Interview with Lori Robbins, Author of Study Guide for Murder

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Study Guide for Murder?

I love puzzles, and the protagonist of this mystery solves crimes using clues from the books she teaches. Also, as a former English teacher, I’m well aware of the homicidal tendencies a school setting can inspire!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Study Guide for Murder, what would they be?

"You Can't Always Get What You Want" and [that Jersey gal fave] Badlands.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I do love reading mysteries in addition to writing them. There’s something so satisfying about solving a crime as an armchair detective.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Last Hope by Susan Elia MacNeal, and Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice by Elle Cosimano.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved writing the scene where Liz arrives at the country club. She feels terribly out of place—and then finds a dead body! As bad as her attempts at playing golf are, at least she didn’t use a club to kill someone. Though she does have some explaining to do…

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

If my protagonist were writing this, instead of me, she'd quote Faulkner and say, "The past is never dead. It isn’t even past.”
