Interview with Philip Bentall, Author of Song of a Stranger

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Song of a Stranger?

As with all my books, I start with some kind of scene in my head. It could be a conversation between two people that sets it off, or in the case of Song of a Stranger, a teacher receiving an email from a Japanese film-star asking for his help, and I go from there and see where it takes me.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

When it comes to fiction, I read a mix of genres from noirish mysteries to writers considered more literary. My writing no doubt reflects my reading in this respect, which can make the task of specifying a genre difficult at times.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I’m not sure about the writing of it but when it came to reading it back it was the chapter that begins at Heathrow Airport when the main character realises things are not quite what they seem.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not that I can think of, though sitting alone in a room for long periods of time thinking up stories might be considered quirky by some.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Not particularly, though there’s a character in Song of a Stranger who’s fond of saying, ‘if you’re not going to live now, when are you?’ which is perhaps worth bearing in mind.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

When fiction feels like it really happened, although by definition we know it didn’t, and lives on in your head – as a reader, at least, that is what I hope to experience.

Interview with S.R. Webster, Author of A Girl Named Ghost

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Girl Named Ghost?

The inspiration for A Girl Named Ghost came to me in an unconventional way, as most of my stories do. It all started with the title.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Girl Named Ghost, what would they be?

After reading this question, the first song that came to mind was "Little Ghost" by The White Stripes and now it's an earworm for rest of the day.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I'm a fan of Horror and Dark Fiction. My love for horror began when I would read Edgar Allen Poe's tales with my pet Crow, Big Fellow, perched on my shoulder. While I am a huge admirer of horror writers in general, I must admit that Clive Barker is the one who truly inspired me to become a writer myself. As luck would have it, I'm also among the small percentage of adults who experience night terrors, which often serves as a source of inspiration for my writing.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Weyward by Emilia Hart, The Exorcists House: Genesis by Nick Roberts, Noir: A Novel by Christopher Moore, along with many more...

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When it comes to my list of beloved characters, Grandma June or Juniper White takes the top spot. Writing the scene where she storms over to her neighbor's house in pursuit of her missing chocolate herbal tea was incredibly enjoyable. Grandma June has no sense of boundaries. She firmly believes that her way is the only way, and she will stop at nothing to prove her point.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have a lot of quirks, but when it comes to writing, all I need is a quiet spot with my laptop.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

There are countless quotes about the art of writing, but the one that resonates with me is, “I firmly believe a story is only as good as its villain.” – Clive Barker

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

My goal is for readers to leave the book with lasting impressions of my characters, keeping them in their thoughts long after they've finished reading.

Irma's scenes are always my favorite:)

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Keep moving, don't stop...slow down, but don't stop.

Interview with Rebekah Carroll, Author of The Chaos Realm

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Chaos Realm?

I started this story in high school to entertain myself. I was very introverted and had been complemented on my “maturity” throughout my youth. Taking that to heart, I didn’t goof off with other teens because I was “too grown up for such things.” I wish I had enjoyed being a kid more. Laments aside, it was still fun to see the expressions on my teachers’ faces when I asked if I could have permission to write after I’d finished course work. I didn’t know back then that I would write a full novel on a beat up old iPod or that it would turn into a book series. I was just having fun!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Chaos Realm, what would they be?

Warren- “In the End” by Black Veil Brides

Cassidy- “Planetary Go!” by My Chemical Romance

Vallerie- “Foreverglow” by Lindsay Stirling

Emron- “The Sound of Silence” by Disturbed

Lillian- “Story of my Life” by One Direction (The Piano Guys cover)

Caprice- “The Light” by Disturbed

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy! and YES!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

"Relentless Blades" Russell Carroll (no relation), "Daughter of Fate" by Aaron Hodges, “Rythem of War” Brandon Sanderson (currently reading), “The Wizard’s Blade” P.C. Darkcliff, “Relentless Blades” Russell Carroll (no relation), “Daughter of Fate” Aaron Hodges, “Royal” K.T. Slater, and The “Underland” Series by Mary E. Twomley.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Despite having a desk to work at, I often end up curled on the couch or in bed while writing. I also still look at my hands when I type because I tend to get too distracted by reading what I’m writing if I look at the screen.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Our family motto is: “In this house lives kings and queens. We do not stand idly by as our neighboring kings and queens suffer. We walk with those whose journey is long. We stand with those who believe in hope. We kneel with those who cannot stand. We Seek the Lord daily—for he is our God, our light, our eternal happiness.”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I hope they know that their Darkness can be beaten. No matter how encompassing the blackness around them is, there is light and warmth for them.

Interview with Yaron Betan, Author of Elf Witch: And the Realms of Paradawn

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Elf Witch: And the Realms of Paradawn?

Elf Witch: And the Realms of Paradawn is a tale about transcending the limitations of who we are and discovering the deeper forces that shape us. At its heart, it follows a young girl on a journey of self-realization, as she uncovers her true power and identity, rooted in her lineage tied to the Greek goddess Athena. Through these revelations, she begins to see the vastness of the universe around her, and in the process, encounters the enigmatic figure known as "The Elf Witch." Though shrouded in mystery and seemingly foreboding, his true nature—a spirit of good intent—emerges, proving that there is far more to him than his appearance suggests. In this way, the story plays on the timeless theme of not judging a book by its cover, a notion that also reflects the creation of the graphic novel itself: a work crafted through the power of generative AI and meticulously refined by edits in post-production. The inspiration for this story has lived with me for a long time. I’ve always imagined a mysterious elf with the ability to open portals to new realms and adventures with a mere gesture. When generative AI became a reality, the connection was undeniable. Just as the Elf Witch brings new worlds to life, AI allows us to conjure entire realities with a few simple prompts. It felt like the perfect medium for bringing this story to life in my first AI-generated comic book.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Elf Witch: And the Realms of Paradawn, what would they be?

I think if I had to choose a theme song for the main characters would be somewhat of a mashup between the Lord of the Rings theme song, Star Wars Theme song and "Willow" with a hint of dread from a classic unsolved mystery show theme song. (Just my cup of tea)

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genres have always been a blend of science fiction, fantasy, and a dash of humor and lightheartedness. This mix is something that naturally finds its way into my writing. Lately, I've been drawn to the cyberpunk genre, which has such a distinct style, as well as classic superhero tales—Marvel and DC comics almost feel like their own genre to me. Since I primarily write for comics and film, my imagination tends to lean toward big, blockbuster-style narratives. I’m especially drawn to sci-fi, fantasy, cyberpunk, crime thrillers, and horror. That said, I’m also excited to dive deeper into comedy and espionage in my future work, as those genres are areas I feel increasingly inspired to explore.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My to be read pile would definitely be the following books: The Long Tomorrow, Biomega, Once and Future, Orgins and Briar, which are all mostly graphic novels from indie writers thats focus more on the cyberpunk, sci-fi and fantasy genres. I personally love reading indie graphic novels as I find their stories are richer and grittier than most mainstream comics, although I still do love to dabble in the occasional one shot or mini series of a Marvel or DC comic book release.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene to write in Elf Witch was definitely the opening. It felt like a unique opportunity to immerse readers into the expansive universe of Tuman, the Elf Witch, and the vast realities he travels through. From the very first pages, the graphic novel invites you to suspend disbelief and accept this new reality, not with confusion, but with a sense of wonder and curiosity—a different way of seeing the world. What made this especially enjoyable was using the "Marvel method" of writing, where I built the images first and then crafted the captions to match. This approach gave me the creative freedom to let the visuals guide the story, making the world feel even more alive as I shaped the narrative around them.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My quirky writing habits have to be the fact that I love to work and get inspired in my man cave, which is filled with old retro toys, statues, film memorabilia and a ton of comic books, comic art and other collectibles. I'm definitely inspired by hoarding too, I guess (LOL).

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Yes, definitely, there are two. The first is a quote by Ayn Rand: "A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others." This quote has always stuck with me as I grew into writing and creating my own work. The second is the famous Stan Lee Quote: "With great power comes great responsibility" An amazing line used in Spider-man which sticks with how I write and how I view heroism and purpose in our world.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

If there's one thing I hope readers take away from Elf Witch, it's the timeless lesson: never judge a book by its cover. Tuman, the Elf Witch, is a character cloaked in mystery. At times, he may seem deceptive, but his true nature and complex backstory gradually unfold throughout the graphic novel. Similarly, the book itself is a testament to not making snap judgments. Created using AI generative art, there are inevitable inconsistencies in the visuals—reflective of the evolving technology—but these quirks are intentionally woven into the narrative. They add to the story's depth, mirroring the theme of looking beyond surface appearances to discover deeper truths. In many ways, the graphic novel mirrors the criticism faced by the characters themselves, particularly Sarah, as she learns not to judge too quickly. The AI-generated format and the story's themes run parallel, reinforcing the idea that both the characters and the book itself are far more than they seem at first glance.

Interview with Francesca Flavia, Author of HALF-ASSED

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write HALF-ASSED?

I wrote it because I saw it as a type of catharsis to rid myself of all my accumulated regrets of past mistakes I made. I workshopped it in grad school and my fellow students thought it was hilarious. I finally got around to finishing it some twenty years later. Procrastination, you know.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of HALF-ASSED, what would they be?

"Born under a Bad Sign" by Albert King.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love to read and have many favorites. Mysteries, romantic suspense, bios, and humor, I suppose are my top tier. I love to write in all kinds of genres except cookbooks. I wouldn’t say I’m qualified to write in all of them though, haha.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Paris Novel by Ruth Reichl; The Housemaid by Freida McFadden ; The Flower Sisters by Michelle Collins Anderson; The Witch of New York by Alex Hortis; In My Time of Dying by Sebastian Junger.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My book is nonfiction and about my life, so I guess my favorite parts are those about my kids and dogs.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My only quirky habit is to do most of my writing in bed. My husband laughs and calls it my “boffice.”

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I don't, but I think I need one. Anyone have an extra I can have?

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I’d like readers to remember that no one is perfect, that everyone makes mistakes, but the most important thing is to move past them. Dwelling on past regrets ruins your future. Believe me, I know firsthand.

Interview with Charles Gilbert, Author of Wrapped in Gold

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Wrapped in Gold?

The story behind the story is that I spent most of my life looking for answers in the wrong places, blaming other people and my circumstances for my own pain and suffering, when really it was me all along who was responsible for those feelings. The inspiration behind writing the book was to put my story out there for the world so that people could identify with where I came from and the struggles I've been through, and then hopefully inspire them with ways to live a better life and ultimately treat people better.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Wrapped in Gold, what would they be?

"Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Self-help, self-motivation and true stories about overcoming adversity and struggle.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

A Life in Parts - Bryan Cranston

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The opening scene when I got in serious trouble for the first time. It set the tone for the book, and that day shaped my life forever.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Coffee, peace and quiet.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Treat others how you want to be treated, plain and simple.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Everybody is loved and needed, and it's never to late for anyone to change their life or outlook on life.

I like to read personal development, inspirational, or devotionals.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?
