Interview with Bonnie Traymore, Author of The Bluff

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Bluff?

Most people can relate to having an issue in their neighborhood that causes conflict and turmoil, and many communities are dealing with the impact of eroding shorelines. A friend of mine had this happen to her home and I thought it would be an interesting backdrop for a murder mystery. Then I added in a toxic marriage to make the stakes higher, which was purely fiction, so the protagonist would be desperate to leave.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Bluff, what would they be?

"Fight Song" by Rachel Patten.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to read is mystery and thriller, mostly psychological thrillers, but I enjoy the occasional rom-com or women’s fiction, like a Taylor Jenkins Reid novel.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I am judging the Best Thriller contest for International Thriller Writers, so I have a TBR list that is piled very high! Because I’m assigned the books, until February, I don’t have much time for anything else. Let’s just say I’m reading the best of the best in my genre. Damn, these writers are good!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There’s a scene where Kate wakes up at the edge of the bluff in her nightgown in the drizzling rain, unsure of how she got there. Turns out, she was a sleepwalker as a kid, and it started up again. I thought, what could I possibly do to make her situation more treacherous? And the sleepwalking came to me. It’s a fun scene, gothic and visceral.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to write in the dark, when everyone in my house is asleep. It's when the stories and scenes come to me.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Carpe Diem.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

If you think you see the warning signs of a toxic relationship, get help. Don’t doubt yourself or think you are reading too much into it, because it usually starts slowly. Trust your own judgement, and if something feels off, take action. Tell a friend or family member. Call a hotline.

Interview with Gerald D. Otis, Author of Vetlandia

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Vetlandia?

I had a 40 year career as a clinical psychologist and researcher. A significant amount of that time was spent in what the most quoted sociologist of the 20th Century, Irving Goffman, popularized as “total institutions.” In such facilities, the life space of the inhabitants is tightly controlled, the individuals are labeled, categorized, and often dehumanized. Those in control see themselves as morally superior, control access to resources, and hold the fate of the inmates in their hands. Many of these institutions are insulated from external oversight thereby enabling corruption to thrive. Staff may manipulate rules to maintain control and protect themselves from accountability, perpetuating an atmosphere of fear and submission. I observed these dynamics first hand and saw their deleterious effects on numerous patients. My consternation and anger resulted in many conflicts with those in charge. At the same time I saw the resilience of those struggling to free themselves of their personal demons in spite of the obstacles presented by their oppressors. I wanted to communicate this state of affairs in a dramatic form and champion the indomitable human spirit.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Vetlandia, what would they be?

I would leave that task to the music editor of the film version of Vetlandia. I’m a writer, not a musician. However, my musical tastes run to the classical, jazz, Herb Alpert and various and sundry songs of the 50s and 60s.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I have no favorite genre and appreciate interesting stories in many forms. I enjoy historical fiction, Kurt Vonnegut novels (especially Mother Night), some thrillers, folklore, and a wide range of non-fiction including biographies, accounts of historical events, genealogy, medicine, scientific tomes, political essays, statistical methods, and whatever strikes my fancy.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I just assembled a book from the notes of a deceased colleague for his former employer. I have read The Behavior of Persons by Peter Ossario (a book about how we use concepts to understand the world, the self and each other) and 1491 (the Americas before Columbus). I am reading the pre-publication works of a friend who happens to be a psychiatrist but writes with an eye toward integrating science, ethics and spirituality. And I have a stack of about 500 articles to read grouped into the categories of emotion, embodied cognition, language, personality, the self concept, and social cognition. Every now and then, I read a fiction book that catches my eye.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The action scenes that take place during the occupation of Vetlandia by the militia were fun. I had several different characters operating and communicating in different locations all at once. In order to keep things straight, I had to make up a diagram to remember who was where and what they knew or didn’t know at different times.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I do not follow the maxim to write something every day. I have to let ideas “incubate” in the unconscious for a while and then I will generate a stream of sentences until I write myself into a corner. Then I have to let things stew a while until I come up with a way out of the corner. I did the same thing when I designed artistic furniture: lay on a couch and think about it for a few days, “forget” about it for a while, and then the image would just come to me out of the blue.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Stay true to your values, don’t rush to judgment or try to be expedient.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Stay open to the possibilities in people, don’t make assumptions about what they can or cannot do.

Interview with R.G. Roberts, Author of Fortune Favors the Bold

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Fortune Favors the Bold?

The original idea for the series, “War of the Submarine,” hit me while I was a student at the Naval War College. A friend and I started spit balling about how World War III would start and what kind of war it would be, and my immediate response was: “World War I was the war of the battleship and World War II was the war of the aircraft carrier, but World War III will be the war of the submarine.” For “Fortune Favors the Bold” in particular, I was inspired by the experience of serving under a very poor captain while in the navy. I frequently wondered how terribly he’d do in combat, and what kind of captain would replace him. Eventually, I flipped that idea under the sea and into a future war, complete with an anxiety-ridden medal of honor winner who never asked to be a hero.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Fortune Favors the Bold, what would they be?

"This is Me," from "The Greatest Showman."

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Tossup between military thrillers and epic fantasy, and yes, I write both.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

David Weber, “Toll of Honor;” C.S. Forester “The Happy Return” (rereading); Deborah Harkness, “A Discovery of Witches;” James D. Hornfischer, “Who Can Hold The Sea;” Dr. Robert Ballard, “Into the Deep;” and Brook Allen, “Antonius: Son of Rome.”

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene where the crew of USS Bluefish cannot find the firing key was such absolute fun to write. I didn't expect that to happen until I was there writing it, and then the idea hit me and just flat out ran away with the story. It was great.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Sometimes I need to change my writing location to get myself going, so my local Panera Bread is a favorite place to go. I also have a writing mug that has joking titles for every one of fifteen drafts a writer goes through.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“I will try.”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The best leaders aren’t afraid to give a damn.

Interview with Amy Quick Parrish, Author of Highlands Homecoming (Highlands Christmas Book 3)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Highlands Homecoming (Highlands Christmas Book 3)?

Well, it’s book 3 in the series. I needed to wrap things up! But what originally inspired me was that I was in a dark place with the pandemic and everything else going on in the world. I had a friend who was writing Christmas screenplays to escape and it seemed like a great idea. I had recently visited Scotland after a long-lost relative contacted us. A lot of us dream of inheriting a place and having an adventure in a new country, so writing a book about that seemed like a great way to escape!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Highlands Homecoming  (Highlands Christmas Book 3), what would they be?

Melissa: All I Want For Christmas Is You

Caitlin: The Ramones’ Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)

Angus: The Season’s Upon Us - Dropkick Murphys

Colin: Ding Dong Merrily on High

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I am loving Romantasy lately, but I haven’t written any yet. I think I’ve always had elements of magic in my screenplays so I’m looking forward to giving it a try.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

All the Christmas books. Looking forward to the new Tricia O’Malley Book - Highland Hearts Holiday Bookshop.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved writing the scene with the Iron Brew. Anyone who knows me or knows Scottish restaurants in Boston knows that that place is based on a real place that no longer quite exists in the same way, but through the magic of writing that cozy little beloved bar lives on!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to light candles that set the tone/mood for whatever I’m writing. For this series I had Thymes Fraiser Fir and Mrs. Meyers’ Iowa Pine. I also scored an amazing Isle of Skye candle that smelled of smoked peat, ocean and honey.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Right now it’s from TM: “Take it easy. Take it as it comes.” Another quote I really like is from Vicente Huidobro: “La vida es un viaje en paracaídas y no lo que tú quieres creer.”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I felt so fortunate this year to be able to see the total solar eclipse in Burlington, VT and then see the Aurora Borealis from my house in May and again in October… I also saw that once-in-80,000 years comet. Remember the beauty in the world and in each other.

Interview with Jean Grainger, Author of Yesterday's Paper (The Knocknashee Story Book 2)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Yesterday's Paper (The Knocknashee Story Book 2)?

It is book two in a series set during world war 2 involving a friendship between and Irish woman and an American man though letters.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Yesterday's Paper (The Knocknashee Story Book 2), what would they be?

The Nearness of You - Glenn Miller

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love thrillers, but historical fiction will always have my heart.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

So many - I'm just starting The Dinner Guest, and just finished The Four Winds, listening to the Seven sisters by Lucinda Reilly on audio,

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved writing the character of Pippa.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I write in a glass office in my garden so i'm surrounded by nature which is lovely. But I write often late at night, or in the early hours. I got into that habit when i worked full time as a teacher and wrote on the side.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The overwhelming majority of people are basically good and kind everywhere, and we all want the same thing: to be safe and comfortable...but that doesn't sell newspapers.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

We have far more in common as human beings than things that divide us, regardless of gender, geography, social class etc.
