Interview with J.L. Hancock, Author of The Spear and the Sentinel
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Spear and the Sentinel?
I used to work as the head of innovation for the US SEAL Teams and I spent a lot of time working with national labs. At one location I had the pleasure of working on quantum sensor technology and the plot sort of formed itself. Additionally, as far as the characters are concerned, I wanted to express the dynamics of working in the Special Operations community as an outsider and the ongoing cultural issues one may face.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Spear and the Sentinel, what would they be?
"Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I read a lot of scientific and political non-fiction but science fiction and technothrillers are what I turn to for fiction to read. As for writing, I would say technothriller all day long.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
The Afghanistan Papers by Craig Whitlock, The Signal and the Noise by Nate Silver, and Act of Defiance by Tom Clancy.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
More than anything I love writing emotional scenes that make the action matter. In this book, a major character has to come to terms with his past in way no one was expecting. Navigating that space is a ton of fun for me!
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I do most of my writing in my head when I run.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Be an egotist, but don't be egotistical. (Something my martial arts teacher taughte me as a kid. It basically means that you control how the world sees you but never let how you are seen define your character.)
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Nothing is ever as it seems.

Interview with Bruce Gardner, Author of The Rocket Man's Daughter
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Rocket Man's Daughter?
It was a desire to research and shed some useful light on the perplexing issues of moral culpability and accountability for Nazi war crimes in a historical fiction framework that inspired my writing of “The Rocket Man’s Daughter.” My hope is that, after reading this novel and considering the portrayals of its fictional and historical characters, the reader will come away (as I have) with a better appreciation of the immense pressures and temptations faced by individual German families as they were confronted with the cultish lures, demonic decrees, and horrific final death throes of one of the most evil regimes in all of human history: Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party. Perhaps, as a result, we will not be so quick to make a blanket judgment of their actions and motives.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Historical Fiction and Biography.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
The Nightingale (Kristin Hannah), Richard Nixon: The Life. (John A. Farrell).
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Chapter 51: the final Soviet assault on Berlin in April, 1945. Nail-biting Interactions between the novel's heroine (Klara Neumann), her Hitler-obssessed sister Elke, and invading Russian soldiers.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
The two greatest commandments: Love God; love others.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Let's not be so quick to judge the actions of others without understanding the facts and motives behind them.

Interview with Hussin Alkheder, Author of Maze of Destiny (Mullah Abdullah Book 2)
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Maze of Destiny (Mullah Abdullah Book 2)?
Maze of Destiny is the second book in the Mullah Abdullah series. The purpose of this series is to highlight the suffering of Syrians during the years of war. In Maze of Destiny, readers will experience the struggles of the Syrian people as they navigate the actions of malicious organizations that infiltrated society to exploit the chaos for profit through kidnapping, human trafficking, and organ trade.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Apart from romance and erotica, I read every book I can get my hands on—both fiction and nonfiction. These days, I’m reading a lot of psychology books because I’m currently pursuing a degree in psychology.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I have a very long list, too long to share here.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The scene where Zakiya meets the Mullah at the end of the novel was incredibly emotional for me—I cried while writing it.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Unfortunately, I’m not a full-time writer, so I do all my writing during my free time, either after work or after study hours. I usually prefer writing in coffee shops, where I can enjoy a comforting cup of hot chocolate as I create.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Be consistent—that’s the only way to achieve your dreams. Intelligence, degrees, money, and social position can enhance your success if you remain consistent, but they won’t mean anything if you stop trying.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I wrote Maze of Destiny for you—the reader— to hold onto the truth that when you put your trust in God, He will never let you down. Be good and kind to others, not because they deserve it, but because it reflects the goodness within you.
