Interview with Sarah A. Denzil, Author of We Play Games
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write We Play Games?
I'd wanted to write a psychological thriller about a married couple for a while, but I felt like so many plots had already been done. I wanted We Play Games to stand out, which is why I focussed on a toxic marriage where both are equally dark and dangerous. There's a power play between Effie and Ben. Sometimes she has the upper hand, whereas other times he does.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of We Play Games, what would they be?
"Toxic" by Britney Spears!
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Suspense and horror are my favourites, but I am a mood reader so I dip in and out of literary, fantasy and YA books too.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Probably half of the paperbacks and hardbacks that I own! I've been mostly listening to audiobooks so there's a huge stack waiting for me. The latest Paula Hawkins book is on there.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The very last scene that involves a side character. I can't reveal too much because of spoilers! But the character in question had some really funny lines in the first draft that I ended up cutting because it was too jarring in tone. But I wish they'd made it in because they were a lot of fun to write.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
My cat scratches my feet from about 11am until I feed him lunch. But that's probably more of a hindrance than anything!
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
"Always stay gracious, best revenge is your paper" - Formation by Beyonce. Every time I have an unpleasant experience in this industry, I use those feelings of disappointment and anger to fuel me on to work even harder.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
One of the main characters believes she's a terrible person and ends up fulfilling that belief. But if she's been able to understand as a young person that she could be a better person, she could have saved herself from that fate. So always believe you can do better.

Interview with J Rose Black, Author of Chasing Headlines (Chasing Victory Book One)
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Chasing Headlines (Chasing Victory Book One)?
What inspired me… So I wrote a short story in 2006 about these characters. They’re older in that short read, with this fun, witty banter and an undercurrent of longing. I always wanted to write more to their story, and often got asked to…And I could think of a number of ways it could go, but nothing really solidified in my brain as like: this! This is the rest of their story! So, finally, in 2021 in the midst of a writing prompt challenge, another short story showed up. But it was back in time, when they were in college. And it occurred to me, then, that maybe before I could go forward in time…I needed to go back to where they began. And when I looked around at other stories I had written that I wanted to do more with - I had several that were focused on college athletes. Which spurred the idea that maybe I could write a series of sports romances focused on a single university, and spanning multiple sports. So, one of the things I managed to do in Chasing Headlines is introduce all the MMC’s of the core group of books that will make up the Chasing Victory series - the QB who will be a Senior by the time we focus on him (he’s a junior, here). The Hockey player whose story will begin in his sophomore year. The Soccer player whose story will be set before Chasing Headlines. I kept having editors tell me this and such character didn’t need to be in there, or maybe I could consolidate this one into that one. Ok, except that guy’s going to play an integral role in book 2, so, while I get it, I’d prefer to keep the whopping 2 paragraphs where Liv talks about him in book 1. I have side stories that include most of the cast who wear athletic uniforms. I had to build the entire world of Texas State Tech in such a way as it could be a foundation for several series. It made this entry a bit lengthier than I intended, but I’m hopeful that as we go, people who choose to read more than one book will find the crossovers to be positive and interesting.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Chasing Headlines (Chasing Victory Book One), what would they be?
Of course I have my Spotify playlist for this one, too. Breslin’s theme song is “Other Side” by Lo Spirit. Since my MMC’s this far have been representing on the mental health front, there’s a lot of correlation with Lo Spirit’s lyrical focus.
Liv’s would be "Birds Still Sing" by Taylor Acorn. The line: “Not everyone stays but the real ones do” is central to her character, and a core belief. Her brother was there when their mother left. Her father wasn’t as present as he could have been, losing sight of the fact his 7 year old daughter needed to feel safe, cared for and loved. With that need unfulfilled for most of her life, she grows up to chase a dream that isn’t really hers, hoping to stop being “left behind” by the only family she had left.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I read a wide variety of books, with Mystery books being amongst my favorites. But I also read a lot of Sport Romances and Shifter / Fated Mates books. So, I’m all over the place. My favorite genre to write is equally as all over the place. I’m excited to continue my Chasing Victory series, but I’d be lying if there weren’t a couple of dragon shifter works vying for my attention. In the background.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
On my TBR right now is: Louisa’s Passion by Shelley Sommers, Any Other Day by Jenna McCall, and Heartless by Ian Feldman.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I think that has to be one of the ones I added in the rewrite - where Liv and Breslin face off at the senior center (where he’s doing his community service). Liv shows up to interview one of the residents and he’s making it difficult for Liv to get into the center, refusing to unlock the door. And then he does, but she wasn’t expecting it, so she misses her opportunity. We’re in Liv’s head and she’s exasperated by this guy, and they’re just really annoying each other. So, she makes a show of coming on to him, and I’m trying to give all the body language signs that he’s eating it up even as she’s feeling self conscious…and then she finds herself pulled in by her own attraction to him. So much so, she almost can’t pull herself away to follow through with her plan. It was fun and flirty and it was meant to show, on the one hand, how made for each other they are. And on the other, how determined Liv can be that even the guy she’s been crushing on all this time won’t deter her ambitions. There’s a bit of foreshadowing in it, but not obviously so.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
My son has taken to getting up in the morning and laying on my lap before school. This isn’t so much a writing habit as it is a writing obstacle. But he’s adorable all curled up there. *sigh* If anyone ever wonders what it’s like to try to stick to their writing habit when you have kids and a FT job…Imagine the stories of cats lying on laps and replace it with a 4 year old at 5:30 a.m. making it impossible to even reach the keyboard.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I’m not super original in this space, so it’s still the “never give up” thing.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
“We’re never as alone as we fear.” - Ernest Hemingway. The way this took shape in Chasing Headlines has to do with the “found family” trope. Families come in many different shapes and sizes throughout our lives. Breslin faces the loss of his family even as Liv clings to the threads of hers. But in the process of finding each other, they discover the beginnings of a new, rather eclectic version of “family.” And however strangely those bonds are forged, this version of family may prove to be stronger than the ones Liv & Breslin were each born with.

Interview with Ian Patterson, Author of False Flag (Mathias Menzies Conspiracy Thriller Book 2)
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write False Flag (Mathias Menzies Conspiracy Thriller Book 2)?
For a thriller writer, a world in chaos is inspiration enough. Specifically, a sense we're controlled not by elected politicians but by the invisible hand of a 'Deep State'. It's both interesting and concerning to me that what once was the domain of conspiracy theorists has now become mainstream.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of False Flag (Mathias Menzies Conspiracy Thriller Book 2), what would they be?
For a man as emotionally and morally conflicted as Mathias, a playlist of Death Metal to songs of enduring love.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
As I grew up reading the Hardy Boys, Mystery Thrillers are still my favorite genre to read and to write.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
SUFFERANCE by Thomas King.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
If 3 a.m. mornings and writing in the dark can be considered quirky, this would be it.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
"True love is the one love you can't live without." Subtitle to an unfinished novel I hope to complete one day soon.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
In a world where anything is possible, all books should be read as non-fiction.

Interview with Greg Miller, Author of Cocaine Cola
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Cocaine Cola?
The first time I picked up a composition notebook in rehab, it felt like arming myself for a battle I wasn’t sure I could win. Recovery—from alcoholism and from myself—was no heroic odyssey, but a grueling crawl through shame and self-discovery. Amid the chaos, writing became my lifeline. The seed for Cocaine Cola was planted in that fluorescent-lit sanctuary, where my pen wrestled with inner demons like Denial, Guilt, and Fear. Laphamville, the grotesque setting of my book, mirrored my mind: infected by greed, decay, and the unrelenting hunger of addiction. By the time I left rehab, I had handwritten two novels. Cocaine Cola emerged as my battle cry, a reflection of survival and transformation. Writing wasn’t just therapeutic—it was defiant, a reclamation of the self I thought I’d lost. Today, holding the finished book in my hands feels surreal. It’s more than ink on paper; it’s proof that from the darkest places, something beautiful can grow. Recovery is a journey, not a destination, and every day I pick up my pen, ready to fight again. A more detailed story can be found in this blog post! -- https://millpwrites.blogspot.com/2025/01/cocaine-cola-and-recovery.html
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Cocaine Cola, what would they be?
For Moses Rock it would have to be something like Johnny Cash's rendition of "Hurt".
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Horror, as a reader, is a plunge into the abyss—a shadowed realm where the air is thick with dread and every creak or whisper hints at unseen terrors. I savor the primal thrill of it, the way it quickens my pulse and leaves my imagination pacing the edges of dark possibilities. Horror isn’t just stories about monsters; it’s an immersion into the unknown, a genre that dares to peel back the skin of normalcy to reveal the writhing chaos beneath. Reading horror is like standing at the edge of a storm, feeling its electric charge in the air, yet knowing it cannot touch me. Writing, though, is a different beast entirely. Psychological thrillers demand not just the unraveling of a mystery but the peeling back of a mind. It’s an excavation, slow and deliberate, into the layers of human psyche. To write in this genre is to craft shadows that linger not in the dark corners of a room but in the unlit recesses of a character’s soul. While horror feeds my appetite for the visceral, psychological thrillers give me the tools to manipulate tension like a puppeteer, to weave webs where every strand connects to a secret, a lie, or a fractured truth. In horror, I lose myself. In psychological thrillers, I find myself—deep within the intricate maze of motive, fear, and consequence. One satisfies the instinct to be terrified; the other fulfills the desire to terrify and provoke thought, leaving readers questioning their own minds long after the final page.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
The Fisherman by John Langan, The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones, and Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The battle sequence in the Fresh Market Bistro.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Every morning at 5 a.m. sharp, I settle into my writing sanctuary with a massive cup of coffee steaming beside me, its rich aroma coaxing me awake. The world is still, cloaked in the kind of quiet that feels sacred, and in this solitude, I find my rhythm. My headphones hum with the sweeping scores of films—Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and Max Richter breathing life into my imagination. Their crescendos fuel my creativity, each note propelling my words onto the page. It’s my ritual, my anchor—a perfect alchemy of caffeine, music, and discipline that transforms early mornings into storytelling magic.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
"The only way out is through."
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
After reading Cocaine Cola, I’d want my readers to remember this: even in the darkest moments, when the world feels irreparably broken and humanity seems consumed by its worst impulses, there’s a glimmer of hope in the fight to reclaim oneself. The story may delve into chaos and corruption, but at its heart, it’s a testament to resilience—the belief that even amidst destruction, we can confront our demons, find clarity, and choose a path toward redemption.

Interview with Hal Emerson, Author of Cicero James, Miracle Worker
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Cicero James, Miracle Worker?
I've had a scene in my head for several years of a regular guy waking up on an autopsy table, realizing he's died and come back to life, and having no clue how it happened or what to do about it. I wrote that scene and realized there was enough of a story there for a full book and, longer-term, a whole series. Beyond that, I've always enjoyed Urban Fantasy but have also often felt frustrated by an over-reliance on storylines that revolve around the Big Three (vampires, werewolves, and faeries). I wanted to attempt to write something with a more original magical backdrop, and that's how I came up with Miracle Workers and their secret society.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I read all kinds of things, honestly--I just finished "The Starless Sea" by Erin Morgenstern, which I enjoyed. I've got "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac next up on my list, and a couple of classics lined up after that. I find myself drawn to strong, dynamic protagonists across all genres, and that's what most often draws me into my own stories.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
"On the Road" by Kerouac, "The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle" by Stuart Turton, and several classics, including "Far From the Madding Crowd" and "One Hundred Years of Solitude" that have been recommended to me numerous times but to which I have just never gotten around.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My favorite scene was the Cicero waking up in the morgue on the autopsy table. Exploring what that would feel like, to die and come back to life with no explanation, was a great mental exercise.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I tend to do my best writing lying down. No clue why. But lying down on a couch or in a reclined chair, with a laptop, the words just flow out of me.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
You don't have to feel like doing it--you just have to do it.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
That it's always worth fighting for what's right.
