Interview with Noah Chinn, Author of Lost Lives (Get Lost Saga Book 3)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Lost Lives (Get Lost Saga Book 3)?

Science Fiction has us look to the future, but it’s really about the present. I wanted to create a setting that’s both familiar to SF fans and unique, something that can explore certain universal themes or present-day issues. Everything from what it means to be human, to the powerful versus the powerless. But always wrapped up in a fun adventure that isn’t afraid to poke fun at its own weird reality.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Lost Lives (Get Lost Saga Book 3), what would they be?

For Moss (Maurice Foote), probably “A Complicated Song” by Weird Al Yankovic, because it perfectly gets across just how things tend to always get worse with him.

For Violet Lonsdale, “I think I’m a Clone Now,” also by Weird Al, because of her identity issues.

For Hel (Helena Lambinon), “2112” by Rush, because that’s the year her colony ship left Earth, and also conveys the sweeping space opera she now finds herself in.

For the main antagonist, Roy Herzog, “The God that Failed” by Metallica, because it reflects the disillusionment he experienced that led to him being who he is.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Science fiction, adventure, and humor, and yep, this series contains all three!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Space Academy Dropouts by C T Phipps (a comedy adventure). Humankind: A Hopeful History by Rutger Bregman (nonfiction, and a positive boost we all need right now), Welcome to the Multiverse (Sorry for the Inconvenience) by Ira Nayman (a zany SF comedy).

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

That’s a hard one to nail down, especially without spoilers. But the climax shifts between five different points of view in rotation. But each shift keeps pushing events forward (rather than repeating the same events from a different POV). Making sure the reader always knew which POV they were in was tricky, but very satisfying. The end result makes the climax feel very cinematic.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Well, I converted my closet into my work office, filled with all my geeky paraphernalia, and I converted an old typewriter into a USB keyboard for me to write my first drafts on. I just like the feel of the keys going clickity-clack.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Be kind. I know it’s really hard right now to do that. Right now many people are terrified, while many others are enjoying schadenfreude, and others still are just drained and can’t look past their own immediate problems. But to all of them, I’d say it’s so important to be kind. That’s all. Just be kind.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Moss is part of that “drained” demographic I mentioned above. He just wants to be left alone, make a few credits, and get on with his life. He doesn’t want to look for trouble and he doesn’t want to get sucked into it, either. But at the end of the day, he won’t look the other way when he sees injustice. So I guess the one thing I want people to remember is this: it’s okay to be grumpy, to be disgruntled, even to be cynical. But you can still be the guy (or gal) who stands up when it counts, and doesn’t back down.

Interview with Katherine Villyard, Author of Immortal Gifts

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Immortal Gifts?

On August 22, 2021, my writer’s group had a one-time vampire story challenge. The idea was to “prove” that “it’s been done!” is not a REAL objection. Of course, it’s also a pandemic book, so about loss and isolation.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Immortal Gifts, what would they be?

“Who Want to Live Forever?” by Queen.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

SFFH. Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Historian and A Dowry of Blood.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Ludwig’s comic relief scene at the family reunion.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I sometimes type and sometimes dictate into my phone when I’m tired.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Being a Jewish vampire is really hard!

Interview with Steven Twitty, Author of Betwixt And Between

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Betwixt And Between?

This was a story that grew from an idea I was tinkering with, a story of an international spy who finds himself in NYC with no memory of himself or the woman he loves. His quest, I figured, would be finding his lover and solving the truth behind the mystery. I had not progressed far in the story when I was thunderstruck by an idea - I had, at one point, read about tulpas and tulpamancers, the latter being mortal humans with the power to create beings (tulpas) through concentrated thought. I realized that in a way, author’s of fiction are a type of tulpamancer since they also create beings through their characters, though I know of no authors who actually expect their characters to appear as an actual being. But - what if they did? What if every character ever created exists and what if the characters in published books are absorbed into their story, their forever home, so to speak? And, what if the characters in incomplete or unpublished manuscripts end up in some form of literary purgatory, living their lives the best they can while they wait to be released back into their story, if that were to happen?

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Betwixt And Between, what would they be?

The theme song to all James Bond movies.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I don’t think I have a favorite genre. I read Ernest Hemingway, Michael Crichton, Tim Gautreaux, David Darling, David Christian and Stephen Hawking, to name a few. I read not only for the story, if there is one, but to learn.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Anything about Baja California (geology/flora and fauna). J.G. Ballard (The Drowned World), Stanley Robinson (The Ministry For The Future) - all related to the story I am currently writing.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene when Julie or Judy is killed. It was disturbing to me when it happened as it changed all of the story’s dynamics but what was done, was done. I regrouped, found the path forward and, I believe, that single incident enhanced the story.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I’m an early riser, a cup of coffee, an apple, new age music (no lyrics or songs that I know from radio or movies - too distracting), and I close my office door and dig in. I don’t have a word count or page count in mind. I write, occasionally search for some fact or bit of information to confirm/clarify, and slog on for a few more hours. About 10:00 there’s a snack break, another coffee, and back at it until about noon. Lunch and then the afternoon hours when I turn myself over to family matters with time to jot down ideas and/or questions.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The lyrics to “The Fool On The Hill” - The Beatles.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I would like readers who are novelists or those aspiring to write fiction to take onboard the lessons learned by my fictitious author in Betwixt and Between.
