Interview with Anastasia Alexander, Author of Dodging Mr. Right

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Dodging Mr. Right?

It started with an impulsive yes. I saw that my local University was taking a professor-guided trip to India. I called my husband and told him about it. He encouraged me to go. He said it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. So, I signed up immediately after getting off the phone. Many vaccine shots later, I found myself in India—touring palaces and temples, riding camels, learning history, and pestering the professor with more questions than he probably wanted to answer. I was curious about the family life and what it was like to be a woman living there, especially what the people felt about matchmaking.

As we traveled through both South and North India, I read ads in newspapers where the parents were searching for a match for their grown child. That led to rich, open conversations with locals about arranged marriages versus love matches. When I got home, I read an article about how, historically, a few women used herbs to try to influence who fell in love with whom. These marriages affected not only the couple getting married but also the quality of life of the families involved. That got me to thinking … what if those women using the herbs were successful? What if they did find a way to have a secret love potion to help them gain more influence and power for their families? And that still existed … what would that look like? How would that affect people’s choices of who they loved? Do we really have a choice about who we love?

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Dodging Mr. Right, what would they be?

“Falling Slowly” by Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

That is not easy to answer, since I read widely, but lately I have really enjoyed women’s fiction and suspense novels.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center, The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez, and James by Percival Everett.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scenes are set in India. I arrived home from India in late January 2020 and started to write the novel in March during COVID. Like most people at that time, I often felt trapped in my house and feared for the safety of my loved ones. I loved being taken away from everything and being transported back to India—its colors, chaos, beauty, and crazy traffic that I currently miss. When I researched and wrote about India, it was a magical experience. Writing those scenes kept that experience alive for me, and I learned more about a land and culture that is complicated and enriching. It reminded me how transformative and expansive travel can be.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Does running to my La-Z-Boy so I can drink my green tea count? I have a rule: no green tea until I am writing. It's how I motivate myself to get into the chair.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Go for your dream—NOW.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I hope they remember something that made them laugh or smile. And I hope they remember it’s okay to love—even when it is messy, and it wasn’t with who and how they planned. Love, with the right person, can be worth all the pain that comes with being with another human.

Interview with Maggie FitzRoy, Author of Woe is Wednesday

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Woe is Wednesday?

This is the third book in my Story Smith Mystery series, which can be read as a standalone. I wanted to give private eye Story Smith an easy case for a change and then have her quickly discover that it is her most complicated and dangerous so far. I also like the false identity trope, where she gets to pretend to be someone else for a while, giving her a chance to act out of character in a fun way that propels her into more trouble than she ever imagined possible.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Woe is Wednesday, what would they be?

Woe is Wednesday takes place in the summer of 1955, when Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley & His Comets was the number one hit. That's a great theme song for the Story Smith Mystery series.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genres to read are romance and mystery, preferably a mix of both, which is what I'm writing now.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I have many books on my TBR pile right now, including fiction and nonfiction. They include Now or Never by Janet Evanovich, The Corpse in the Closet by Lucy Score, Dead Man's List by Karen Rose, Dreams of El Dorado by H.W. Brands, and Mark Twain by Mark Chernow.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I love writing the WowWee It's Wednesday party scene in the beginning of the book because it was fun watching Story pretend to be someone totally out of character and go on a pretend date with her crush, Steve Evans.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I often write with my cat, Summer, on my lap. She's my muse.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My motto as a writer is "I love writing fun, romantic, witty, and suspenseful books for the joy of my readers.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

My overall theme with all my books is that love wins, good wins.

Interview with Stephen Johnson, Author of Salmon Swimming Upstream and Homebound

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Salmon Swimming Upstream and Homebound?

Steve, Jeff, and Rick, the three brothers central to the book, are a tight, cohesive cadre. They grew up in rural America sharing many humorous escapades, adventures, and cultural traditions often taken for granted in today’s faster, digital-driven world. Steve took a nostalgic chance to share his brotherly relationship in an effort to help slow the pace of digital technology.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Salmon Swimming Upstream and Homebound, what would they be?

For the more humorous mistake-driven segments of the story, the theme to the Beverly Hills TV show is the obvious choice, but more serious segments are definitely by Jim Croce’s “Time in a Bottle.”

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Nonfiction and memoir.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Being a left-brainer, there’s no doubt that it has to be a science fiction book, but that would be a lie, and my wife knows it. It would be some sort of techy textbook because she says I’m addicted to learning, particularly about music, and not learning the fun stuff about music. So, I’d probably pick out some obscure historical book on jazz arranging.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Now, for this one, my favorite was the chapter about learning about the birds and the bees.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My quirky writing habit is that I’m addicted to my left brain. That is, I tend to stay rather methodical. Often, to my demise, according to my wife. I love science and have a difficult time expressing the creative right half of my personality. Now my wife says I’m a rather quiet sort, but others, once I get going, people can’t shut me up, especially if it is about something I love.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Oh, that is easy, slow down and smell the roses.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

If you have brothers or siblings, cherish them, enjoy them, don’t forget them, spend time with them, and for Christ's sake, pick up the phone when they call you.
