What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write this book?
I've always been interested in the fact that Earth's magnetic poles have reversed multiple times throughout history. The last was several hundred thousand years ago. I like fantasy and sci-fi that is grounded in some trigger based on a scientific cause. It gives the reader plausibility. I then combined that with a coming-of-age and chosen-one theme in a unique worldbuilding scenario.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of your book, what would they be?
Gideon—"Believer" by Imagine Dragons.
Thea—"Brave" by Sara Bareilles.
Toma—"Counting Stars" by OneRepublic.
Bram—"Best Day of My Life" by American Authors—my favorite character.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love reading both fantasy and science fiction. I enjoy writing both, but I've had more fun with the fantasy.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Steelheart and the upcoming Of Sorcery and Science.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The final battle between Gideon and Kull. Specifically, when Gideon pulls the Magnet of Marjon out.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I laugh out loud when I craft a fun scene- it makes my wife laugh at me.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
Enjoy the small things, for someday they may be the big ones.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
That perspective on life and history may appear differently depending on which angle you view it from. Okay, I'm making it two - never believe you are powerless!
