What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write this book?
Gems of the Sea is the first in a new series called Gems Rising, which features some of the children of the original Gems of Fire series. I asked questions like: What would happen if Anna's son, the future king, struggled to embrace his mother's faith? And what would happen if whispers of dark forces from another continent were coming? Gems of the Sea is full of exciting adventure and romance, but also addresses more fundamental questions of faith and perhaps the biggest question of all—innocent suffering.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of your book, what would they be?
Tomas—Benson Boone, "Lord I’m Tired of Trying" ("Don’t Forget Me, Lord")
Frida—"How Far I’ll Go" from Moana
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Yes! I love seeing more and more YA or simply fantasy with Christian themes coming out. I also enjoy thrillers and historical fiction, though!
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I'm finishing the Songs of the Adriels series by Jennifer Kropf. Next up would be Dawn of a King by Sarrah Naomi, and then Jamie Ogle's Daughter of the Rebellion.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The first kiss on the ship scene surprised me! I’d planned on having the romance progress more slowly, but it felt right. Tomas is being changed by Frida to do something a bit out of character and spontaneous, and for once, she’s the one surprised.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I walk my golden retriever every morning and let my imagination go. I’d say my pre-writing during those early morning walks is the foundation for letting those scenes happen in an organic way that I don’t get from staring at an outline.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
I’m a Christian and have always loved the verse, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Many writers struggle with some sort of imposter syndrome, and I’m no exception, but this verse and many others remind me that I don’t have to be perfect, just humble and diligent.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Honestly, this ARC reviewer might have said it best: “So what happens when you cross a brave, strong-willed, free-spirited girl with a young man who’s running from a future he feels unfit for? You get an exciting, faith-filled adventure that explores courage, identity, and learning to trust the Most High even when the path ahead seems impossible. Oh, and a slow-burn, friends-to-lovers romance.”
