What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write this book?
Several years ago, I was invited to speak at a high school career day as an author. I looked through my unfinished works and found the opening scene to this book. Since the scene was about teenagers, I thought it would be fun to use in the writing demonstration. I read the first few pages to the students, and they loved it so much that they wanted more. They told me they would read the book if I’d finish writing it. That was about four years ago. In between writing the books in my Shelby Nichols series and others, I spent my spare time writing this book. It was so much fun to be in Sage’s world, and I’m so happy with how it all turned out. It's really been a work of love for me.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of your book, what would they be?
If Sage had a theme song, it would be "A Symptom of Being Human" by Shinedown because she spent her whole life hiding in plain sight. The whole premise of that song—feeling like you don't fit, hiding who you really are, the weight of a secret identity—maps onto her story beautifully. And Shinedown has that emotional intensity that really captures her voice. For Zane, Sage’s boyfriend, it would be "Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men—a bit more adventurous, which could work given that he ends up right in the middle of all the action alongside Sage.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
It changes depending on my mood! I love anything that’s a little outside the box. I like sci-fi and a touch of paranormal, like my Shelby Nichols series about a woman who can read minds! I also love a good Regency romance. Fantasy used to be my favorite, but now I like mystery and suspense more—although I’ll still read a good fantasy!
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
First up is the 4th book in the Apprentice to the Villain series. It’s not out yet, but I’m looking forward to reading it. I’ve also loved all The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells (and the TV series—I’ve watched it 3 times!), and I’m looking forward to reading the latest release in that series.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
That’s hard to answer because there were so many! Right now, I'd say it’s when a spaceship suddenly materializes in front of Sage and Zane. I won't say more than that—but let's just say it changes everything!
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I have my office all perfectly arranged so I can look out my window and see the backyard garden while I\'m writing. It helps to have a Diet Coke handy as well!
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
I write because the stories won’t let me stop, but it’s my readers who keep me going. I think my superpower is making people forget the real world for a while.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I always feel hopeful after reading this book—and somehow it sparks my creativity and my imagination. I hope it does the same for you!
