What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write this book?
Terra Lux is a continuation of my Terra series. I wanted to explore how my characters would respond to a cataclysmic event—one that threatened their home and their very foundation. They surprised me with their resilience and loyalty to one another.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of your book, what would they be?
Sev gets “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush—she’s resilient and strong, and as powerful as the song. Phoenix gets “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens—he’s a family man at the core. Soren gets “My Immortal” by Evanescence, because he’s our handsome emo king, and Pearla gets “Coal Miner’s Daughter” by Loretta Lynn, because she’s strong and rooted in her beginnings.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love to read and write science fiction, especially by women. I believe women bring such a unique perspective to speculative fiction.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I’m currently reading the excellent Jalina Jons young adult series by M.K. McDaniel, and book five of that series is on my TBR.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I honestly love Lorien’s birth—it’s dramatic without being cliché, robed in light and dark motifs, and both bleak and joyous. It was fun to watch it unfold.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I have quirky writing habits, for sure. Early morning, before the sun is up. Coffee and a Stanley Cup nearby. No noise—no TV or phone—just peace.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
Give love and respect, and it will be returned to you.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
The resilience of my characters... The power of love and the importance of family.
