Interview with Wesley Banks, author of Faith In Every Footstep

What can you tell us about your new release, Faith In Every Footstep?

Faith In Every Footstep is the prequel to Hope In Every Raindrop. I promise if you love dogs, you will not be able to get enough of this book. It’s kind of like Jack London meets Nicholas Sparks.

Would you ever participate in The Yukon Quest?

It’s something I would love to do, but to be honest, I’m not sure I could handle it. I interviewed several mushers for the book, and the extreme colds (up to negative sixty below) combined with what seem like endless days of mushing sound insanely difficult. I think that’s probably why many people refer to it as one of the world’s toughest races.

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

Even though Patrick Rothfuss seems pretty determined not to release Doors Of Stone, his character Kvothe, is definitely one of my favorites. I also love Vaelin Al Sorna from Blood Song, and Eragon from The Inheritance Cycle. I could keep going on; there are so many great books and characters!

What advice would you  give your teenage self?

There’s an old Delphic maxim, “Know thyself.” I think becoming self-aware early on and refusing to compromise from who you are is the best advice I could give.

If you were a teacher, what book would you assign to your class?

Emerson’s Essays, without hesitation. They cover topics like friendship, love, character, history, and so on.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

The short answer is purpose. I think you can find happiness from doing pointless things (like playing video games, which I love to do), but real joy comes from purpose.

What scene in Faith In Every Footstep was your favorite to write?

I can’t say too much without giving away the ending, but I will say that anyone who reads this book will fall in love with the dog, King. During the climax King comes to life in a way you won’t forget.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Several, but the most prevalent is “Where there is a will, there is a way.”
