Interview with Skye Warren, Author of Red Flags

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Red Flags?

Characters come to me first, usually. So I imagined Sienna as a young woman stuck in a small town full of rumors and prejudice, a woman who longed to leave but didn’t have the resources. Then one day the circus comes to town. It’s a modern circus, without magic of the traditional kind. But there’s a special kind of magic that comes from opportunity. And from Logan Whitmere, the mysterious owner.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I’m obsessed with romance of all kinds, including contemporary (which I write), as well as historical, paranormal, and suspense. Some of my favorite authors are Lisa Kleypas, Laura Griffin, and Annabel Joseph.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m finally allowing myself to read the Ravenels series by Lisa Kleypas. I’ve been a huge fan of her other books for a long time, but waited until many books in her newest series were out before starting.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I usually write with my dog snuggled against me and, if I’m lucky, a fresh cold boba tea.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Let it go.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Sienna is Asian American, like me, so I infused some of my own experiences into the book.
