Interview with Monica Murphy, Author of Never Tear Us Apart

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Never Tear Us Apart.

It’s a story of a girl who was kidnapped and eventually saved…by her kidnapper’s teenage son. Years later she’s on national television talking about her ordeal when the kidnapper’s son sees her and becomes immediately obsessed with finding her. The connection they share is too strong to deny and soon they’re in way over their heads. All sorts of angsty things happen. This is not what I call a conventional romance.

What’s your favorite song lyric?

There are too many song lyrics to narrow it down to just one but can we reflect on the genius that is Drake? I’m still obsessed with Hotline Bling. My favorite lyric from that song is, “Started wearing less and going out more.”

What’s in your Netflix queue?

My Netflix is used by my children so pretty much everything on there doesn’t belong to me. But I did watch something recently – Love, Actually. I adore that movie!

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

My preferred way of spending a rainy day is cuddled up in a blanket with a warm cat on my lap either reading a book or watching a movie. Usually though, I’m at my desk writing a book.

What are you currently craving?

Considering I’m answering these questions a few days before Christmas, I’m craving any sort of holiday treat! Frosted sugar cookies are a favorite.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

I absolutely cannot answer that. There have been too many fabulous couples I’ve read and can’t narrow them down to just one!

What’s your favorite quote or scene from Never Tear Us Apart?

Hmm, this was a tough book to write because the subject matter is quite heavy. But I did enjoy writing the date scenes between Ethan and Katherine. I just wanted them to feel like a normal couple which didn’t come naturally to them. They have so much baggage between them so when I could inject a light moment into the book, that made me very happy.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

No regrets and the worst they can say is no. I try to ask for pretty much everything they want. If I’m told no I move on. Hey, at least I tried. But if the answer is yes then – score. And I can’t regret the things that have happened to me. I’ve dealt with some really crappy, terrifically hard things (who hasn’t?) but I’ve muddled through and come out on the other side. No regrets because I’m pretty pleased with where I’m at presently.
