Interview with Mercedes King, Author of Jackie’s Paris

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Jackie’s Paris?

I love all things Jackie Kennedy. A few years ago, when I read about her junior year of college spent abroad in Paris, I wondered if I could craft it into a story…and here we are!

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Yes, I tend to read what I love to write—mysteries, historicals, and crime fiction.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Beryl Blue Time Cop, a departure from my usual, as this is a fantasy with romantic elements.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I enjoyed the scenes at the masquerade ball. There’s dancing, mingling—and a fencing match with a huge surprise!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to settle in at my writing desk with a cup of hot chocolate—winter or summer, doesn’t matter—and play classical music or excerpts from operas.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Nothing hard and fast, but hey, Kindness is always a good idea.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Jackie’s Paris is a coming-of-age story. I think there’s often a struggle between embracing who you want to be vs. who your parents have raised you to be. Jackie eventually becomes the well-rounded woman who solidified a place in history. I hope the story is a reminder that conflict and heartaches will come, but we can get through anything.
