Interview with Mari Carr, author of April Fools

16 Apr 2018

What can you tell us about your new release, April Fools?

April Fools is a sexy romantic comedy involving a foursome of Hollywood sitcom writers trying to film their finale in an Irish pub in Baltimore. Between the dancing bears, karaoke, and tequila, it’s a madcap adventure. Add in the “which guy should she date…how about both?” aspect and the story is a perfect blend of laughter and heat!  Better yet, there’s an actual April Fools prank within the story for readers!

What’s the last book you read?

I just finished Erin Nicholas’ Diamonds and Dirt Roads, book one in her new Billionaires in Blue Jeans series. The second, High Heels and Haystacks is out now, but I haven’t had a chance to get to it yet!

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Jamie and Claire Fraser in the Outlander series. I’ve read it more times than I can count.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always been a huge reader–my day job is high school librarian–so the idea that I wanted to write was always hovering there in the back of my mind. In truth, I have to give my husband credit for giving me the shove. I had a weepy 34th birthday–no idea why I chose that one to fall apart on–but he finally looked at me and said, “what’s wrong?” I said, “I just thought I’d have my house decorated and my book written by now.” My husband, ever practical, simply said, “So do it.” And I did.

You’re hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

Oh wow! I love this idea. I would choose JK Rowling, Harper Lee and Janet Evanovich. The conversation would be stimulating, fascinating and funny!

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

In my pjs, in front of my computer, with a cat on my lap, writing a book.

What scene in April Fools was your favorite to write?

The whole book was a blast. It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to write a romantic comedy, which is my favorite genre by far. I would have to say the big reveal at the end, where Mr. Big Gesture returns and the “which guy” question is answered.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I always fall back to something my father said to me when I was in high school. I was stressed out over something — I have no idea what now, probably a big assignment or a problem with a friend — and it was really impacting me. My dad looked at me and said, “In the whole scheme of your life, how big is this?” The thing is…it wasn’t big at all. The problem faded like most do. Every time I feel myself getting too worked up over a problem, I try to decide how big the issue is and honestly, I’ve found very, very few things matter enough to keep me up all night and impact my health. Those words have improved the way I deal with stress big time.
