Interview with KD Pryor, Author of The Dreammasters (Of Gods and Monsters Book 1)

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Dreammasters (Of Gods and Monsters Book 1)?

Travel, myth, and magic combine to inspire my writing. Ireland and Irish myths inspired my current series. I’ve traveled to Ireland many times, and my husband and I lived in Galway for two years. The inspiration for “The Dreammasters” came to me while living in Ireland during take-off on a flight from Dublin bound for Lisbon. I’d put my head back as the plane began its ascent and an idea popped into my head about particular people, specific women, who could change things via their dreams. I started writing the book in Ireland. I’d been reading Irish fairy tales and Celtic Mythology. It was a natural step to connect the women who changed reality via their dreams, The Dreammasters, to the Celtic goddess of dreams, Caer Ibormeith.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love reading suspenseful books that keep me on the edge of my seat. I enjoy a complex plot filled with twists, a mystery to unravel, and an unexpected ending. I also love reading in a series, although I have several favorite books by authors who write stand-alone stories. I don’t exclusively read books within the paranormal women’s fiction genre, but it’s a genre I enjoy reading. The books do have twists, thrills and of course, supernatural suspense.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The books on my TBR pile include: The Homecoming by Kate Morton; The Nature of the Beast by Louise Penny (and all the rest of the books in her Inspector Gamache series); Mom of the Chosen One by DM Fike; The Midwitch Two by DJ Bowman-Smith; A Genie’s New Start by Sammi Mason.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

It’s very difficult to pick a favorite scene. One of my favorite scenes to write happens early in the story when Aisling awakens to a phone call the morning after her husband has left her. In the call, and her subsequent visit to the hospital, she learns her husband has been killed in a way hauntingly like the dream she had the night before. This prompts her to travel to Ireland to discover the power of her dreams. Another favorite scene to write was Aisling’s first Dreammaster training session when she discovers her place within the magic of the Otherworld.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I prefer to write early in the day after my morning meditation. I do have a favorite writing mug and it’s filled with coffee to get me going.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Writing is work and I find I do my work best when I write every day, preferably in the morning. I also believe in balance, and when I need a break, I take it. When I am struggling with a scene or a character, a day away often reveals answers and allows me to move forward with my book. One quote from Irish writer William Butler Yeats speaks to the paranormal women’s fiction writer side of my nature. “The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” I do believe the world is filled with magic, and even when I don’t see it, I feel it.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Life changes and we must change with it, even when it’s uncomfortable. Learn to trust yourself and take a chance, because no matter where a woman is in life, she can embrace change and step into new situations with courage and confidence.
