Interview with Kally Ash, Author of The Reaper

01 Mar 2023

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Reaper (Mac Tíre Mafia #2)?

The Reaper was written entirely around one scene that I saw so clearly in my head before I’d even began. The scene that started it all was his love interest waiting for him on her knees, submitting to his need for control. I knew when Orin Lynch was introduced in book one of this series that he was a deeply damaged character who needed to find his redemption. I love deep diving into a character’s wound, finding their trauma and helping them heal, and that’s exactly what The Reaper is about… that and unaliving people. Lots of unaliving people.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Reaper (Mac Tíre Mafia #2), what would they be?

Orin’s would be Dark things by ADONA. Fallon’s would be Dancing with the Devil by Demi Lovato.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I really love a rom-com. They’re a lot lighter than what I write, and I enjoy the way they make me feel afterward—satisfied that everyone got their HEA.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

King of Wrath by Ana Huang, The Fine Print by Lauren Asher, Terms & Conditions by Lauren Asher, Better than the Movies by Lynn Painter, The Do-Over by Lynn Painter, and Guild by Raven Kennedy.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene that was the catalyst for this story. I could see it so clearly, and it led to a very spicy scene where I had to manage Orin’s desire to claim Fallon’s body, yet be restrained enough not to hurt her.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have to write in complete silence! I think it’s because I get up at 4:45am to be writing by 5am. The house is quiet and I can’t disturb my daughter, so silence is the only way I can write. I also have an over-size cup of tea somewhere on my desk.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I have a couple of things that I always keep in mind: 1. Don’t get distracted by things that don’t serve you. 2. You do you and don’t worry about what other people think of you. 3. Trust in your talent.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Morally gray characters are more fun.
