Interview with Jana Aston, Author of Right

14 Apr 2016
Tell us a little bit about your new release, Right.

Right is my second novel and features the best friend from my first novel, Wrong. When I wrote Wrong I wasn’t sure if I’d even write a second book, but I knew if I did, it would be Everly’s story. She was even more fun to write than I expected her to be. She’s a handful, and not shy about blurting out her opinions. Everly has a really clear plan – and stalking agenda, for her future. In her novel the tables are turned on her and I love it so, so much.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

J.A. Huss! I’d been her assistant for well over a year before I picked up a pen. (Literally, my first book was written almost entirely by hand.) I’d lob ideas at her for books, some of which she liked and some of which drove her nuts, I’m sure. Her style is romantic suspense and mine is romantic comedy. I wanted her to write a book about a hot gynecologist. She told me thanks but no thanks, write that one yourself. So I did, determined it could be done. That turned into my first novel, Wrong.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Ana and Christian from Fifty Shades of Grey. Emma and Jack from Can You Keep A Secret.

What was the best part about quitting your day job to become a full time writer?

I did quit my day job to become a full time writer! Like a crazy lunatic. Who writes one book and then quits? This girl. I spent the last five years working at a call center. I hated it, but oddly it was a good job financially and benefit wise. So I thought twice before quitting. But then Wrong really took off and I just thought, screw it. The hours there were awful, and I needed the time to work on my second book, so I walked. So back to your question. The best part is, NO BOSS! And the coffee. It’s so much better at home than the stuff they offer in offices. My keurig and I are very happy together. Seriously though, I think it’s doing things how you want them done. I get to run my business exactly how I want. I don’t have to roll my eyes at company policy or get pissed off about how things are run.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Relaxing. I feel like I spend all my time in front of a computer.

Where is your happy place? Why does it bring you joy?

Starbucks, Disney World, London. On the simple end, Starbucks. Especially when I did have a day job. If I didn’t have time to stop and get a venti iced coffee, my day was shot. I needed that treat to get through the morning. Disney World, I am such a nerd, huh? I just love it. It’s peaceful to me, I’m not sure I can explain it. It’s like home. London, I knew I loved London before I even went there the first time. I think I was English in a past life. Sometimes you travel and you think, that was fun, but no way would I live there. And sometimes you travel and think, I could have lived there my whole life. That’s London to me. Also, the accent. Dies.

What’s your favorite quote or scene from Right?

Oh, good question! There are so many moments that I love in this book. I’ll leave you with this one. “It’s okay to rewrite your happily ever after, Everly. Sometimes the right guy is the one you never see coming.”
