Interview with Gerald Everett Jones, Author of Preacher Stalls the Second Coming

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Preacher Stalls the Second Coming?

The engine of drama in all of the Preacher Evan Wycliff mysteries is that people in his small farming community bring him problems that no one else wants to solve.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Preacher Stalls the Second Coming, what would they be?

Boogie Street (Leonard Cohen).

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Literary fiction and classics. Perhaps the best definition of great literary fiction is that it defies definition.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Leviathan (Paul Auster), State of Wonder (Ann Patchett).

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

As a BookLife reviewer wrote: “A tense discussion of the Book of Revelation between Wycliff and Pastor Obadiah proves more gripping than many mysteries’ shootouts.”

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

When I write fiction I no longer outline. If I can surprise myself, perhaps I can delight my readers.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I write mystery-thrillers and literary fiction for adult readers who seek insight, fascination, and delight in the adventures of their own lives.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Why do bad things happen to good people?
